The Richmond question is one I knew in my gut without immediately recognizing why. After thinking about it overnight, I seem to recall that the rapids were built -- or "artificially enhanced" with dredging, trucked-in boulders, and poured concrete -- in an existing river to provide a permanent training facility for American kayakers. I think I read about this right about the time that Adventure Boy was learning to upright his first kayak in the indoor swimming pool of a motel where he worked in one of his early jobs in northwest Wyoming.

Semi-related tip for home decor: An upside-down kayak in the living room makes a colorful and useful coffee table.

The most, um, rapid of our rapids are indeed Class 4. Folks hereabouts actually brag (?) about the fact that Richmond is the only city in the US with Class 4 rapids within the city limits. They are a lot of fun, and it is kind of odd to be rafting or kayaking and looking up and seeing a city around you.

If I had been the contestant, I might have had a problem with the question, because I know we do not have Class 5 rapids. On the other hand, since we do have the highest level rapids of any city, I might have just overlooked the 4/5 dicrepancy, and gone with Richmond. Maybe editorialized that no city actually has Class 5 rapids within its limits, or something, and then said something about glowing potatoes.

There are no rapids of note on the Willamette River, just Willamette Falls.

As for the James, Wikipedia says: "The most intense whitewater stretch is a two mile (3 km) segment that ends in downtown Richmond where the river goes over the fall line. This is the only place in the country where extensive class III (class IV with above average river levels) whitewater conditions exist within sight of skyscrapers."

Your link does appear to state that there are Class 5 rapids on the Willamette River (at least during rainy season), and it seems fairly clear that the Willamette does, indeed, enter Salem's city limits. If this is correct, I think the show owes the contestant $225,000 and a look at the $500,000 question. --Bob

Ha, good one! Coincidentally, I might have gotten this question "right," because of the time I visited you in Richmond. I had a few hours to kill the next morning before driving to the Norfolk airport, which I spent walking and driving along the James River and eating my first meal at Five Guys. From what I saw that morning, I knew that there are major rapids through the heart of Richmond, though I wasn't sure if they were Class 5.

It has been a while since we had a good controversy on the show. I'll be interested to see how this one turns out.

That link is the only one that says anything about more than Class 2 rapids on the Willamette. If there are in fact Class 5 rapids I would think that someone else would have mentioned them somewhere on the Net.
