The South Magnetic Pole is constantly shifting due to changes in the Earth's magnetic field. As of 2005 it was calculated to lie at 64°32′S 137°52′E / -64.53, 137.86 [1], just off the coast of Wilkes Land, Antarctica. That point lies outside the Antarctic Circle. It is moving north west by about 10 to 15 kilometers per year (see also Polar drift).

I believe that that Wikipedia entry is one of the most confusing I've ever read -- far worse than my question. First of all, the entry, contained in the URL, refers to the Magnetic South Pole, but in the article, they constantly refer to the South Magnetic Pole.

To a scientist, there is no huffledy-puffledy "historical reasons." The field lines of a magnet point inward at the south pole and outward at the north. On the Earth's surface, the magnetic field lines point outward at the pole located near Antarctica, so that is the magnetic north. Period.

I do agree I could've written a better option in on the question, though.
