How in the world was anyone (outside of the Ashland neighborhood) supposed to have a clue about this WWOQ?

Here's the webpage for this airport. It looks like a decent general aviation airport, but I don't see any notation about any commercial airline service. I also didn't see any explanation for the name, i.e., any connection with JFK that might let someone logically deduce that an airport located there would be named after him. Sheesh!

Oh, but the terminal building is a very attractive log cabin. :P

Did anybody else think this guy looks like Jason Alexander from Seinfeld??

On to the questions:

1. easy. I've seen the movie.
2. for a math question, this was easy.
3. easy. I think this was on J! once.
4. ATA.
5 and 6-JTQ.
7. easy
8, 9, and 10-way too easy,
11-I know that Lord Mountbatten was in the Royal Navy, so I guessed D and was right.
12-ARRRRGH!!! Who knows this????????? Not me. I take the $100K and go. They are coming up with some weird high-level questions this year.
I'm just a game show nerd.

Ashland's population was 8620 in the 2000 census. I would guess that fewer than 1% of Americans have even heard of Ashland, Wisconsin, and fewer than 1% of 1% would know the airport's name, or that it even has an airport. It's not a town you'd be likely to encounter unless you were specifically looking for it. It's in the far north of the state, near Lake Superior. The four towns listed have an average population of about 18,000. The largest one and the only one I'm sure I've heard of is Mason City, Iowa, since Buddy Holly died just after his plane took off from Mason City. I can think of no legitimate justification for asking this question. It's a pure 1 in 4 guess unless you live in northern Wisconsin.

The first picture of Miyazaki that comes up on GIS really looks like Jason Alexander.

When I saw the promo for this week, I though to myself, "I guess I didn't get on because they'd used up their chubby, balding guy quota for this season already." Now I find out he even co-opted my initials. Bad form, dude. :)

Nah, congrats on the win.

One of the unfortunate side-effects of the new "Hot Podium" and the emphasis on expressiveness showed up today - Michael's deodorant failed him at the worst possible moment.

That explains why I've heard of Mason City. When I saw the question that was the only one I recognized.

Mason City, Iowa, is mentioned in "Iowa Stubborn" from The Music Man (and was Meredith Willson's hometown), is why it stood out to me. But I could not think of any reason there'd be a JFK memorial airport there, or anywhere. I couldn't think of any places JFK went as a student or on vacation or any projects or ANYTHING.

So I called the airport manager and asked him WTF.

He was very nice, and said they have a picture of JFK shaking hands with some lady there, about three weeks before he was killed. He took a helicopter from that airport back to maybe Duluth to get back on Air Force One. When he was killed not long after that, they renamed the airport. Before that it was Ashland County Regional Airport or some such (it opened in 1958).

The manager didn't realize they had been on TV, so I told him to call his local affiliate and ask for a tape.

Wow, you actually phoned the airport manager, Skoop? :)

They have a nice story, but it's still not anything anybody outside of Ashland would know.

I agree. I bet few people inside of Ashland know that story.

Which is to say, it is totally a bullshit question, but I figured it may as well be an opportunity to learn something.
