A.J. reviews the question and says he thought they were a defense contractor. He doesn't think it's grain. His instinct is leading him to either coal or petroleum. He asks what Alexis was thinking and she replies that she had no clue. He asks if she has any lifelines and she says she has the Double Dip. Then she asks him if there's any coal in Illinois. A.J. says that's a good question, since when he thinks of coal he thinks of West Virginia. Alexis says that when she thinks about petroleum she thinks about Texas and the south. Then she asks if grain is a midwestern kind of thing. A.J. says it is. Alexis says it's clear that we don't know this together; A.J. agrees, although he says he likes her reasoning. If he were to Double Dip he'd make grain one of his answers because she's convinced him. She asks him what his second choice would be and he says "paper". She says that she's going to make those her final answers because it's basically a free guess anyway since she's at $5000.
After the conversation ends Alexis immediately asks for the Double Dip, stopping the clock with 22 seconds.

Had the name never been changed to Kool-Aid, I would probably bet a dollar that many confused drug addicts would try to snort it.

Technically, the movie was based on the book.

This question came up during Buzztime Trivia the last time that I was at BWW, about a week and a half ago. Since I did not know this at the time of the taping, I would've asked the audience if I had been in the HS.

I never read about this, so I would've asked A.J. and hoped for the best. If he didn't give me a certain answer or a good second choice, I would've walked away rather than lock in an answer or use the DD.

Oh, Fireball! You mean if TPTB ever did grace you with The Call, you'd be one of those contestants who'd slink away in the middle tier with the DD on the table?

Here's an article about Alexis's appearance. Nothing there we don't know from the transcript--aside from a plug for the Movie Week auditions.

A.J. really performed brilliantly as a Stop The Damned Clock lifeline, here, didn't he? In some alternate universe, I suppose that the "expert" would have made the those logical deductions, if the answer wasn't immediately recognized. Even after Alexis led him to dismiss coal and oil, he couldn't think about how logical having a paper industry in Illinois would be, and so he convinced her to burn the DD.

Next season, I sure hope we don't see too many instances of contestants talking about "free guesses" on the $7,500 (formerly $2,000) question. :|

Well, if it wasn't for TDC®, I could've had enough time to go through the four singers and figure out which one was 68 years old last year. Or at least figure out that Dolly Parton was 5 years too young and Jerry Lee Lewis was 5 years too old. I had no clue how old Frankie Valli is. He's been around forever, but he still looks like he's in his 40s.

Meredith got the last name right after the commercial break. Presumably someone corrected her.

I guess "soft" as opposed to "hard" (that is, containing alcohol). Since Kool-Aid is the only one with fruit flavor, that's the answer.

It took them long enough to realize that "grain is a midwestern kind of thing". Of course they do have petroleum in Illinois (we pass oil wells on I-64 on the way to St. Louis) and may even have some coal.

When the Expert said that Archer Daniels Midland is a defense contractor, I nearly fell out of the chair. I knew the correct answer was "grain", as I can remember back in the 90's when they ran ads in Time magazine proclaiming themselves to be "supermarket to the world." I'm glad she got the expert to talk out the answer with her.

$10K-ask the audience. I have no idea about celeb perfumes.

$12.5K-no idea. ATE or DD.

$15K-I knew this one, remembering that Carter is from Georgia and Emory is the only school in Georgia listed.
I'm just a game show nerd.
