I'm partial to AeroRed myself, which has the same features and (in my opinion) is more attractive. --Bob
I just took a quick look through most of the styles that are available, and found:

The Aero<color> series is similar and more attractive, as you said, but I just like having each thread in a grid-type presentation, so my eyes follow along correctly from a (short) thread Subject line to the creator of the thread. I liked very much that, for each user in a thread, it shows at the bottom of the user information box what is that user's current status (ie. online/offline). A few others had that feature too, while other styles just have a list of currently-online users at the bottom.

I didn't like the Getaway<color> series because it puts the date and time of the post underneath the block on the left which contains the user information & avatar.

Cesium is horrible because the font and background colors are too similar to distinguish. You have to mouse over whatever you want to read.

Hello Kitty caused my eyes to bleed and my brain to twitch.

I don't like any of the ones with the user info on the right.

A few others were nearly identical to subsilver2. From what I could tell, there were just slight differences in the look of the icons.

If you don't count all of the "Merry Men" (imp-posters) and the other imposters, there's really only about 3 people who post here. <jk>

I am not yet convinced that beast and mini are real. I do believe that Wintergreen is real, since he was on Millionaire when Millionaire was a baby. I am certain that Annie is real, because I know her better than anybody else, and she truly is so incredibly sincere! The third possibility remains open. I'm trying to think about it, but I may not be real, so it's difficult.

SC, just because Wintergreen and Annie are real people doesn't mean they actually post here, somebody could be posting in their name, as shocking as that might sound.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

In this day and age I don't think many people think of "naked" as needing a euphemism. (Although when I was growing up, in the altogether would have been the only acceptable term to use!)

This is my first post on the bored, and it's so late for this topic that no one will see it! (I would have added to the string sooner, but I was waiting for the e-mail that said I'd been activated. Guess I didn't need to!) Hope I'm doing it correctly. Happy to be here in any case.

Welcome to the madness!

Unfortunately, probably one of the reasons we haven't picked up many new active members since we had to put registration on lockdown last year is because the auto-email that is supposed to go out after an account has been activated does not in fact go out. Even the person who runs the Bored hasn't figured out why that is or how to fix it.... so we get a lot of people who register, and then never come back because they don't think they've been approved.....

Each post has a "quote" button in it. In my interface (style), it is in the lower right corner of each post.

When you press that, it brings up a text box, just like the "post reply" and "new topic" buttons do, except that the post you "quoted" will now be at the top, enclosed within "quote tags" ([ quote ] and [/ quote ], but without the spaces). Within that text box, you can leave the quote intact, or cut it down to just the sentence or paragraph to which you're responding.

If you meant copying text in general, place your cursor at either end of the text you want to copy, press and hold down the left mouse button, go over to the other end of the text you want to copy and then press the "copy" icon at the top of your browser, or use the keyboard shortcut Control-C (hold down the Ctrl key and press the letter C). That copies the text into your notepad, from where it can be pasted elsewhere using the paste button or Control-V.

Speaking of the interface, it is configureable (changeable) from within the "User Control Panel," which should appear as a link near the top of this page. Many of us prefer the "Subsilver2" choice, as it puts the Bored Member and their associated avatar and other info on the left side of each of their posts. The "User Control Panel" is also where you would go to set an avatar or a signature. If you have trouble getting around in there, let us know what you're trying to do and we'll give you the exact steps to do it.[/quote]

Thank you for all the great info! Lurking sure is less complicated! I'll try my best to get up to speed. (The preview on this post looks like there's no distinction between the quote and my added comment, but we'll see! Thank you again for being so helpful.

Yup--I blew it! I'm going to mess up this bored in no time!

Sure, Bob, if you like. This season I auditioned on May 19 (passed written test, no videotape, sad postcard) and June 8 (passed written test, no videotape, sad postcard). As I mentioned, I'm going again on June 30. (Why, I don't know--apparently I'm an addict.)

I've made it to videotape only once, maybe 2 seasons ago?

I have 16 sad postcards sitting in a pile. I can remember not passing the test at least two times (perhaps as many as three or four) so my total auditions are probably between 18 and 20, can't be sure. (Might also have some more rejection postcards sitting around this messy place of mine, so who knows my actual total!)

I know I'm still not doing this quote thing correctly, but I hope to get it eventually. (Maybe after I actually read the detailed instructions given me!)

It actually worked! I see what I did wrong in my first reply: I deleted the opening quote instructions, making it all a big blob. Think I've got it now. Thanks again.

Yup, your first attempt was missing the opening quote tag. Each of the buttons (such as "B", "i" & "u") above the text entry box somehow formats what you type in the box. For them to be perceived and applied properly, they must surround your text in pairs, and the "closing" tag starts with "[" followed by "/". If you know what they are, you can type them in yourself. Usually, this is only done when correcting botched tags. It is much easier to either:
a) type first, then highlight any text you want to format, then press the desired button. You will actually see the tags in the text box.
b) press the button first and then type in between the tags, which is where the web page leaves the cursor, in my browser, at least.

Until you get familiar with this stuff, you can always use the preview button, which you've already found. If it looks messed up in the preview, it will definitely be messed up when you press "submit".
