#1 Post by BBTranscriptTeam » Mon May 17, 2010 5:24 am

Jennifer Kavallieratos
Tarrytown, NY
Attorney

The show opens with John Henson (this week's guest host) lecturing the contestant. "I've been here all week and I haven't had one million-dollar winner. Money equals ratings. You need it, the show needs it, and most importantly, I need it. I'm going to help you. You pay attention and I'm going to give you..." He "notices" that the camera is rolling and he says, "You never told me we were rolling" and gives a sheepish laugh. "We were just..." and then he says, "I'm going to call my lawyer." With that the opening credits roll.

After settling into the chairs, John remarks, "I understand that you have a bit of a ritual. When you need to perform under pressure you do something to give yourself an added boost. What is that?" Jennifer replies, "I paint my fingernails and toenails pink." (She holds up her hands to show the audience.) She believes that there is power in pink because it's so pretty. It makes her feel good. John jokes that it's "very 'Legally Blonde' of" Jennifer.

Jennifer's only remaining lifeline is her Double Dip.

$12500 - In psychology, the tendency for people to believe they are above average is an "effect" named after what fictional town?
A - Lake Woebegon
B - Bedford Falls
C - Cabot Cove
D - Grover's Corners

Jennifer: "I have no idea. I don't know if I should guess." After a couple more seconds click off the clock she says, "I'm going to Double Dip," stopping the clock with 10 seconds remaining
DD choices
Jennifer makes A her first final answer.
Spoiler
A - Lake Woebegon (10)

John: "You didn't even need the other one, did you?"

Jennifer: "It was a total guess."
$15000 - In an effort to boost tourism, what country declared Band-e-Amir its first national park in 2009? (Henson pronounces it "Bandy-meer".)
A - Afghanistan
B - Iraq
C - Lebanon
D - Kuwait

Jennifer: "Again this is a hard one. I have no idea." The clock winds down and as it expires she says, "I don't think I can guess."
Spoiler
A - Afghanistan (0)
Afterward John asks her what her guess would have been, and she picked the correct answer.

Jennifer leaves with $12,500.

John quips, "That ought to keep you in pink toenail polish for quite a while."

To boost tourism? How's that working out for them?

Does anyone remember hearing or reading a story about this? It seemed obscure for $15K, IMHO.

As far as I'm concerned the show could do without these cutsie openings. Let's see more game play.

A tough question if you don't follow the news. All four are plausible answers (Lebanon will turn up in a later stack as a choice). I knew the answer but not what the park's features were. Turns out it's a series of lakes.

I can eliminate C. Cabot Cove was the town in Murder, She Wrote, and I can't imagine that being the right answer to this question. D was the town from Our Town, and the people in that play were not above average. Just average. My instinct was B for It's a Wonderful Life, but I would've used Double Dip.

NFC. Ask Mo and hope for the best.

The way the question framed the effect isn't really accurate. Garrison Keillor describes his fictional hometown of Lake Wobegon, Minnesota as the place where:
"All the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average."

The Lake Wobegone Effect is most commonly brought up in discussions of education, e.g., when state test results illogically report above average results for the state as a whole.
