....winning a vintage Heywood Wakefield desk on eBay.

I am in a hot and heated battle for a vintage Heywood Wakefield student desk for the office at my new residence.

Because the room is on the small side, the student desk -- with its side bookshelves and slightly smaller size (44 inches across vs. 50 inches for the larger H-W desks) is perfect.

It's not refinished so it's being offered at far below book value.

We can pick it up in the Jersey suburbs.

I would be happy. :D

I was outbid by $1.57 in the last seconds.

By someone who wasn't the person I was bidding against for three days.

I'm sorry.

This isn't exactly what you were bidding on, but it's a good-looking desk, another Heywood Wakefield, if you can pick up in Jackson Heights, NY.

I hate it when that happens!

Somebody drove up the price of the leather Jeopardy jacket that belonged to Johnny Gilbert in the last few minutes and I ended up paying twice as much as I thought I would.

I am currently high bidder for another desk, this one located in Lancaster, so the guy will deliver it.

So, we'll see.

There are some bid sniping programs available for Ebay which automatically place a bid right before an auction ends so the original bidder doesn't have a chance to respond. A lot of times it's someone who's never bid on the auction before.

It's happened to me on a number of occasions.

You guys would hate me and my wife.

That's our bidding strategy. I don't think we've ever bid on something any earlier than 15-20 minutes to go.

And honestly, I don't see why anyone would.

Edited to add- we don't use sniping programs- just have gotten very adept at when to put in our last bid.

jeemie --

My problem was I couldn't hit the button fast enough. I sat and monitored for the last 25 minutes or so.

I put my first bid in about two hours before and that was just to get something in there.
