Matt Schultz (#4 Tournament of Ten)

They replayed his $100K question that he won on a Double-Dip. His second answer was correct Switzerland and he admitted he meant to guess Austria as his second choice and was lucky he mistakenly went with Switzerland. Asked if he would go for it he said he drew a little stop sign on his hands and would not guess. But if he knew it he would go ahead.

Time banked: 2:47. Total time 3:32
Potential $1M question:
The most-watched TV episode of all time, the final episode of "M*A*S*H" aired at 8:30 p.m. on February 28, 1983, following what sitcom?
A. Private Benjamin B. Square Pegs
C. Alice D. Newhart
Spoiler
Matt says he has an inkling but is closer to 0% than 100%. He gives reasons he thought it might not be A, B, or D. In the end he decides he does not know and leaves with his original $100K.

THAT is a million-dollar question.

You either know that or you don't.

Maybe it's Googlable. I haven't tried yet.

This was a pretty difficult question. All of the shows above aired on CBS, and all of them were on the air on February 28, 1983 (although "Square Pegs" would be canceled a week later). Also, "Square Pegs", "Alice", and "Newhart" all aired on Monday nights with "M*A*S*H". Don't know what night of the week "Private Benjamin" aired.

"Newhart" aired during the 9 PM hour for most of its run, so it was really the only one I could eliminate for sure. Based on the information I knew, I had it down to "Square Pegs" and "Alice". I managed to guess correctly once again, but in the HS, I would not have taken the gamble--mostly because of my uncertainty about "Private Benjamin".

This would be very specious logic.

The final episode of M*A*S*H was a special-length episode...I wouldn't be counting on when shows normally aired to try and eliminate any of them.

It may have worked out for you in this case, but I'm glad you would have the sense not to go for it in the HS.

Whoa!

So what was that? A subconscious override of his conscious decision?

<*Sigh*> I'd have jumped on this one in a heartbeat, being a huge M*A*S*H fan and full of trivia knowledge about the show.

Being a pastor as well, I was hoping he would know this question. But his reason for not going for what I call a WWOQ for a million was virtually the same reason I did not go for a what I thought was WWOQ at 250,000. I wish for him all the best, as well as all the other contestants.

Mill Q:

This is a question about the airtimes & networks of 5 TV shows, none of which I was watching at the time they're asking about.

I'd watched MASH at some points, but not in its last year. (I've certainly seen enough reruns, though.) I never watched the other 4 shows. (Well, I'd watched a little of Alice early on, enough to know it didn't have much to do with the movie anymore, which I had seen).

I liked the contestant's reasoning; it followed my own line of thinking. I wouldn't have bet on it either. Even though it turns out it was right.

That's the first of them where I had no idea at all.

I was certain that Alice was a Sunday night show, so that's the only one I ruled out for sure. I was leaning toward Private Benjamin. --Bob
