Disappointing that the contestant didn't know this...
But I find it pretty shocking that the audience didn't either.

Perhaps I'm biased as a Big10 alumni, but isn't the logo a memorable piece of trivia in and of itself, a la the FedEx arrow?

My theory is that 25 percent of the audience consisted of people who care nothing about football, particularly about college football in distant states, but had heard of the Big 12 and thought that was the new name for the Big 10.

As if.

This was a killer question - way undervalued. Since I have no idea about football, I would have eliminated 10 just because they asked the question. I likely would have then went with #2 and had the same result.

I disagree, although I think it's because I am going to a Big 10 school so I was screaming it when I saw it. Penn St. was the most recent to be added to the list. But looking at this from a trivia stand point, Wouldn't it be too obvious for that value of a question to be 10? I could see if it was the $500 question and people thought....."So Easy......10" but I've seen millionaire try to trick before.

So that's the significance of the 11's in christie's name. I'm gonna blame it on her.

Oh, boy. If there was ever a question that was begging for an audience dursting, it was certainly this one. I knew she was in trouble the second she called on the audience.

And for once, I can say I know more about sports than 84% of the people.

Well, at least on this one question and in comparison with that particular New York audience.

The first thing I said was "Well, it ain't 10. If it were 10, the question would be worth $500."

If we're not Big10 alumni and we don't follow college football, where should we have noticed this logo with the answer so cleverly hidden inside?

I live in a Big Ten state, and I have never noticed that about the logo before.....

I did know that Christie U disrupted the order of the universe by making the Big Ten have 11 teams back in the early 90's though....

So they couldn't change the name to the Big Eleven?

I'm sure they were reluctant to change such a famous name, but doesn't it leave the bad impression that these eleven colleges can't even count? :P

I don't understand why they went with an uneven number of teams in the first place? Couldn't they drag someone else in at least?

When the Big Eight Conference added the four Texas teams (also sometime in the 90's), they changed their name to the Big Twelve....

Well, there are quite a few people in Michigan who believe that Ohio State alumni can't count anyway, and vice versa.

Meredith says she did not know the answer either
This seems a little tricky for this level. Obviously neither the audience, nor Kristy nor Meredith knew that Penn State had been added to make eleven.

I remember hearing talk in the late 1980s or around 1990 that Northwestern was close to dropping out of the Big Ten. However they became competitive in the 1990s. Had they dropped out, Penn State would have replaced them keeping them at ten.

I wonder if the Big Ten question has ever appeared on the "Stupid Questions" category on Jeopardy.

There's a lot of money involved if they can get a twelfth school. Conferences with twelve teams can divide into two divisions and have a playoff game (which does not count against their regular allotment). The playoff game can mean big bucks, recruiting exposure and TV coverage. The SEC, ACC, Big 12 and several of the minor conferences expanded to twelve teams for this exact reason.

I think the Big Ten has held out hopes someday of getting Notre Dame to join. However, Notre Dame already plays in the Big East in all sports other than football, and has the football TV contract with NBC, so that's not likely to change in the near future.

5K: This is sad. At this level, I would have thought it was a joke question. Even though its the "next tier" gate, that it was a trick didn't even occur to me. "How many teams are in the Big Ten?"!!!! I would have been out myself without even using any lifelines.
