I always thought that Rick(y) Nelson didn’t get enough credit for his music, he recorded really nice stuff and had great musicians backing him on his records, one of which was the great James Burton. He also was well ahead of his time with the ‘Country/Rock’ sound that he had in the late 60’s and early 70’s.
Amen, brother. Nelson was VERY unfairly lumped in with the teen idol no-talents (I'm talkin' to you, Frankie and Fabian!) of the late 50's/early 60's. Nelson had talent to spare, and as you said, surrounded himself with top-notch musicians. He was one of the first in the country-rock genre, and his Stone Canyon Band included the future Eagle, Randy Meisner. Even though he did get inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I still think his image and legacy is not what it should be.
