CARO! Go back right now and read the directions, dammit!
Yes, Mistress!

1. I remember hearing about someone in high school who told the teacher he hadn't finished this book. The teacher asked how far he'd gotten, and he said, "Call me Ish." "Moby-Dick, or The Whale" by Herman Melville.
2. "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury
The Other 2. "Rebecca" by Daphne DuMaurier
3. "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Somebody or Other
4. "In Cold Blood" by Truman (Lionel Twain) Capote
5. "Love Story" by Erich Segal
QOD: "Trainspotting" (I LOVE that movie)
Bonus: (I LOVE that movie) but I can't remember the name of the guy who played Sick Boy, except that it wasn't Ewan MacGregor.
Bonus Bonus: Well, since I don't remember who it was, I have no clue here.

KT, regarding your response to QoD #1 -- how big was the bruise that resulted after the teacher threw his/her chalkboard eraser at you, I mean, um . . . "someone"??

Don't feel bad, most people probably haven't, but I can't help myself from giving people nicknames (who have already given themselves handles, ha!). I'm the only one that calls him that (or Pomodoro Uccidere). Or calls Moon Moonbeam (or Grape Boy) or calls kayrharris BoB or calls starfish Spunky (which is good, because he hates it) or calls....oh wait a minute, I'm not the only one that calls Saucy Saucy or Snaxx Snaxx. YAY!earendel wrote:Oh, OK. I've never known KT to be called Caro.
Actually it did do you some good, because the #2 I was going to take out was the one you knew. Ha! I wasn't discouraged about this one, since it didn't take any effort to fix, but thank you for the compliment.earendel wrote:Extra points are great - however it didn't do me any good because I didn't know one of the #2s. Still in all, you're doing a great job with a tough task, fannie, so don't get discouraged.fantine33 wrote:Well, I did go four days (I think) without a mistake, so I had to get my average back up. Ha! I put in Call Me Ishmael afterwards because I thought I needed an easier one in there to start than #2, which was originally #1. I'm going to leave it, so there's just the opportunity for extra points today. YAY!
Kittyfish I bet I can guess that #4 is the one you have under "to be read". I loved #1, although I would never have read it if it weren't required in school. The thing I like most about it is that it led me to reading Bartleby the Scrivener, which affected me quite profoundly.
And YAY!!!!!1 for reading #3 too many times! That is my all-time favourite book (along with The Agony and the Ecstasy). Those were the two books that I had to own, getting them from the library over and over again wasn't enough. On my 17th birthday I took the bus downtown, trekked down to the bookstore and bought them for myself. Yes, it was quite the chore to get books back then. How thrilled was I years later when the internet and amazon.com appeared. Ha! And, no matter how many times I've read it, there are three places where I'm going to cry. I just am, no matter what.

You need the exact title on these rather than on the finish the poem where I gave some leeway as long as you had the main gist. This isn't because I put in some book with a crazy parenthetical title or anything. In fact, these titles would be kind of hard to mess up if you know them. I chose pretty clear cut and direct ones, I guess because lines have to pretty be simple if you remember them (two of these I looked up).

And I'd better mention Snoopy as well, or he'll be all out of sorts.

I think Saucy is referring to Cori aka Gabrielle. I recall that the conversation went that she was a BoB, Junior League Division, Mel was BoB, Auxiliary and Ellie was Honourary BoB, Northern Branch. But you, and only you, are THE Belle of the Board. I can't imagine why she couldn't keep all that straight. Ha!

Kay, you are soooo there it is scary. I referred merely to the term BOB, not the most excellent reigning holder of the title.
Trust Queen Fantine to remember all the honorariums LOL. I think I got to be a Junior BoB northern edition, along with Mom.

You're right about #3. It's #2B that's in my to-be-read pile. I guess I should add 2A.
I read #4 soon after it was published. Scared me silly.
And YAY!! for "Bartleby the Scrivener."! One of the better papers I wrote in college was about "Bartleby" characters in the works of Bernard Malamud. It's probably one of the few papers I wrote after reading the subject works in their entirety.

CARO! Go back right now and read the directions, dammit!
1. Call Me Ishmael.
Moby-Dick, Herman Melville?
2. It was a pleasure to burn.
Grrrrr....Fahrenheit 451? (Confession: never read it....) If so, Isaac Asimov
2. Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.
Rebecca! Daphne DuMaurier. My son had to watch the movie in English class and I tried to psyche him into liking it. I prefer the book, but I usually do....
3. Serene was a word you could put to Brooklyn, New York.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith. I will make my m-i-l read this book if it's the last thing she does. She loves the movie and it's soooooo incomplete!
4. The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call "out there".
In Cold Blood, Truman Capote. I had just read this before the WWTBAM episode....
5. What can you say about a 25 year old girl who died?
Umm....Girl, Interrupted? No idea if this was a book...

CARO! Go back right now and read the directions, dammit!
Quite a few people didn't go back and read the directions (maybe because they weren't Caro and they were scared to disobey? Ha!)
1. Call Me Ishmael.
MOBY DICK - HERMAN MELVILLE
2. It was a pleasure to burn.
FAHRENHEIT 451 - RAY BRADBURY
2. Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.
REBECCA - DAPHNE DUMAURIER
3. Serene was a word you could put to Brooklyn, New York.
A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN - BETTY SMITH
The best book in the history of the written word. Mini, you are right about the movie. I was so disappointed when I finally saw it (back when you had to just catch old movies at 3 am when you could), but there was just so much in the book. Plus, I'm always disappointed in movies when I read the book first and particularly enjoyed it.
4. The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call "out there".
IN COLD BLOOD - TRUMAN CAPOTE
I was pleased with how many of you had read this. I'm wondering if it was because of the dueling Capote movies from a couple years ago? The Hoffman one was far superior, in my opinion. Caro, I hadn't thought about Lionel Twain in a long time. That was a funny-ass movie.
5. What can you say about a 25 year old girl who died?
LOVE STORY - ALI MCGRAW
I loved this movie, but I was a angsty young girl with an Ali hat. I also loved Sunshine. When I was older and read the book, I thought it was crap.
QOD Note: You need the title only, no bonuses for the author. Don't automatically think you don't know it, you might be able to work backwards, as the Bonuses give some clues to help you.
QOD: The sweat wis lashing oafay Sick Boy; he wis trembling.
TRAINSPOTTING
5 Point Bonus: Who played the aforementioned Sick Boy in the 1996 movie?
JONNY LEE MILLER
I thought the EW readers would get Angelina Jolie and know he was her first husband and then the Sick Boy thing would click.
5 Point Bonus: He was the first husband of what actress (who is more humanitarian than full time nut job these days)?
ANGELINA JOLIE

I was pleased with how many of you had read this. I'm wondering if it was because of the dueling Capote movies from a couple years ago? The Hoffman one was far superior, in my opinion. Caro, I hadn't thought about Lionel Twain in a long time. That was a funny-ass movie.
5. What can you say about a 25 year old girl who died?
LOVE STORY - ALI MCGRAW
I loved this movie, but I was a angsty young girl with an Ali hat. I also loved Sunshine. When I was older and read the book, I thought it was crap.
