4. Dennis Ritchie
5. Charles Babbage
6. Alan Turing
7. Ada Lovelace
8. James Gosling
9. George Boole

YAY, I've heard of two of them! Let's hope that what those two have in common, the other eight do as well. (I originally read #1 as "Jim Backus", ha!)

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

This is a toughie! I recognize Admiral Grace Hopper and Alan Turing, both giants in the field of computer programming. My brilliant young Toastmasters friend who's such a fan of Ron Paul gave a speech about Turing a while back, somehow managing not to mention all the strife in his personal life which arose largely out of being born gay in the first half of the 20th Century. I'll guess that Boole contributed Boolian logic and that he's dead too.

I was quoting Admiral Hopper before I knew who it was I was quoting: "A shop in harbor is safe, but that is not was ships are for." I think she was ignoring the Arizona and Oklahoma in the Day of Infamy QoD...

And finally, I know there was a Babbage involved with the Manhattan Project, so I'll guess he's dead too. I'll guess the rest are alive and maybe get a couple right.
