R.I.P. Cranberry Ball Ornament 2004 - 2007.
Last night at about 3:00 a.m. I heard this strange noise downstairs. After a while I figured out that it was the sound of a glass ball rolling on wood floors, then occasionally being stopped as it rolled against the carpet or steps.
Then I heard a crash.
I went downstairs and Jasper was sitting under the dining room table, looking sheepish. There was class ornament everywhere, so I swept it up. There were a few big pieces so I could put it together and see that I had most of it.

Did Jasper knock the tree over?
The first year in our house here our tree, which was a little lopsided, fell over three times. The next year I was at Sears Hardware and found the mother of all tree stands. The bucket for the trunk is 11 inches deep, 8 inches in diameter and constructed of 1/4 inch steel. The legs are 1 1/2 inches wide and extend a full 15 inches out each of the four sides (38 inch full diameter of support) and are made of 1/4 steel welded to the bottom of the bucket.
We get 8-9 foot Noble or Frazier furs so they have pretty stout trunks. I'd wager I could climb the tree myself without it falling over. The tree does not sway at all.
