small rant or something
I'm 40 years old. I've never learned how to go to bed. As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to do one more thing before I went to bed and fell asleep. One more tv show to watch. One more thing to look at on the internet. One more chapter to read etc. Hell if I know what I did when I was single. Scratch that. I got me a job where I didn't have to be there until between 11 and 12, and didn't get home until 11ish. I don't think it's insomnia - I'm almost always asleep within minutes after lights-out.
The last 7 years the system has been "go to bed when Mrs. Fly tells me to". It's a good system, in that it's generally only one night a week that I stay up until 2. When she goes out of town I'm up that late every night. Always at some point I notice the time and freak out. And it still takes me half an hour to get to bed. It's ridiculous.
Frankie's at a stage where he sleeps reliably from about 8 to about midnight. Then he wakes up and needs Mommy, and she goes to bed with him and holds him until he falls asleep. Usually she falls asleep before he does. So I've got my own bed for a little while and no one to make me go to bed.
Last night I swear to god I spent at least half an hour refreshing my browser at NBC.com and hulu to see if the new episode of Chuck was there yet. It wasn't. I went to bed at 1:30. Woke up at 6:30 (back in my twenties and early thirties I could sleep late. I used to see that as an oversleeping problem. Now I pretty much can't sleep past 7 without major effort.) Watched Chuck and Heroes.
Mrs Fly made a great breakfast. Hard to ask for sympathy because I'm tired because I'm too much of an idiot because I didn't go to sleep at a reasonable hour. I decided to start dinner in the crockpot. Peeled the carrots and took out the big knife to start slicing them. Didn't get a good enough grip on the knife handle. Dropped the knife. Cut my finger on the way down. Took half an hour to stop the bleeding and dress it.
I'm having a great week. Thank god for bowling tonight.

As rants go, you have much to learn, grasshopper.
Glad you didn't cut a bowling finger.

I can be the same way. When my wife is out-of-town, I stay up super late on the weekends, puttering around the house on projects.ToLiveIsToFly wrote:I'm 40 years old. Re: small rant or something
I am sorry to hear that little Frankie is having problems sleeping.
We had some similar issues with our son, as he was hardest to train to put himself back to sleep. Lil' Bit could get herself back to sleep as long as she had her blankie.
God took pity on us, at our advanced maternal and paternal ages, with Princess Pudding, as she started sleeping through the night on a regular basis around one years old.
Now, she will climb out of her toddler bed in the middle of the night, go turn on the light, get a stuffed animal or blanket to take back to bed, and go back to sleep. (She never remembers to turn off the light. Al Gore would be very angry at her energy wastefulness.)

Thanks. I don't really see it as a bad thing - it's just a stage he's going through. He sleeps a little longer as time goes on. He'll get there, and we'll give him the time he needs. Having him in his own bed is a huge help, even if he shares it with Mommy. We had a queen-size guest bed in the spare room before Frankie. We don't have anyplace to store it, so rather than a toddler bed, we took out the slats and put the mattress on the floor.Appa23 wrote:I am sorry to hear that little Frankie is having problems sleeping.

I did not even catch that he was in a bed ,and not a crib, the first time that I read your initial post. I figured that your wife was holding him in a chair or on the floor.ToLiveIsToFly wrote:Thanks. I don't really see it as a bad thing - it's just a stage he's going through. (I consistently fell asleep in the chair while doing before-bed and middle-of-the-night feedings with our kids.)

Re: small rant or something
Once she goes to him at midnight-ish, she's usually with him for the night. She says usually he wakes up one or two more times in the night, but she's right there so it's no big deal. This morning she said she didn't think he woke up at all once she got him down again that first time. So maybe we're turning a corner.Appa23 wrote:I did not even catch that he was in a bed ,and not a crib, the first time that I read your initial post. If she had to sleep sitting up all night with him, I don't think that would work - he'd be back in our bed again. Or else she'd be like Barney in the latest episode of How I Met Your Mother.
By the way, I'm glad the dance recital went well. I'm apparently so wrapped up in my own stuff lately I haven't been paying much attention to other people. It's all about me. Me me me me mememememememeeeee.
