MPEG question

For work, I need to attain a basic technical understanding of how MPEG works. Can someone point me to a good reliable source, preferably on-line? It doesn't need to be citeable -- it just needs to be correct and comprehensible to me. Thanks. --Bob

The first three or four Google hits all look trustworthy.
