Indoor Rock Climbing
Has anyone had experience with indoor rock climbing? Is this something you can just go and do with no prior experience?
A friend is coming in from out of town and we had thrown around the idea of trying that tomorrow. Not sure if it is definitely on the agenda but I'm starting to wonder if you can just walk into the rock climbing gym and say you want to do that, or if you have to have experience or any type of equipment??

They furnish equipment and training, for a fee. I recommend both.

I've done it....lots of fun, and you don't need any advance prep. When I did it, it was a spur of the moment thing at some gym on a layover in Orange County, CA. Two other crewmembers and I went; one didn't even have the right shoes for it, but this place had rentals available. Like skoop said, they'll instruct you on the basics beforehand.

And there's an automatic tether hooked to your harness so you cannot fall. You can get to the top and just push off and you'll slowly decend.
Most places have several levels of walls from beginner to expert. Plus, those different colored 'rocks' are not there just for decoration - you can choose to climb by only using the blue rocks, or the yellow or any combination of colors to make it more of a challenge as you get better.
It's a good workout too, you use your whole body.

I've done this multiple times. It's a ton of fun, and there's no training required. Really, the only instruction you need is how to attach the safety gear which is really the only unpleasant part because obviously it needs to be very tight in a potentially...uncomfortable area. But I'm guessing that's not as much of a problem for you so go for it.
