Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 3/12/09

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Mar 12, 2009 12:37 am

We are now down to the second to last LS game of the season, and the last one consisting of songs of my own choosing. And wouldn't you know it, there are a number of repeat songs in this game. By my count, at least 4 and maybe 5 of these songs have already appeared in a past game this year. I apologize for that, but this is a theme I've been thinking of doing for a few years now, and I finally amassed enough songs to pull it off.... and that meant using a few songs I already had for other games....

This is an interesting theme, and for the time being, these are the only 12 songs I could come up with that fit it. I know there are many more, but just because I know enough music to host these games doesn't make me some kind of musical genius.... so IF you can figure out the theme, you can get some bonus points if you can give me another song that fits....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 3 points for the theme.....

1. These people round here wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces
They're so resigned to what their fate is
But not us, no not us
We are far too young and clever

2. Here comes the woman
With the look in her eye
She's raised on leather
With flesh on her mind

3. Say you don't know me, or recognize my face
Say you don't care who goes to that kind of place

4. What do you want? What do you want?
I want rock'n'roll, yes I do
Long live rock'n'roll

5. From the park I hear rhythms
Marley's hot on the box
Tonight there will be a party
On the corner at the end of the block

6. on your mark ready set let's go
dance floor pro I know you know
I go psycho when my new joint hit
just can't sit

7. With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us

8. I, recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone, yeah
I, recommend walking around naked in your living room, yeah

9. If the way that you need
Is too much like greed
Decide if you are rich or you're poor

10. Whatcha gonna tell your brother?
oh oh oh
whatcha gonna tell your father?
I don't know!
Whatcha gonna tell your mother?
Let me go...

11. He who gets slapped and he who gets saved,
He who brutalizes the timeless stage.
He is the mongrel, he wants it all,
He lives for relics, hang on the wall.

12. The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass

Theme?

I will give you 5 bonus points if you can name another song (with artist) other than the 12 above that fits today's theme....

Theme? I have an idea on this one. I may be way off base, but it's all I can think of. And I can apply this to several of the songs in this list.
Spoiler
The lyrics to all of these songs actually mention the name of the album on which they appeared.
I will give you 5 bonus points if you can name another song (with artist) other than the 12 above that fits today's theme: I can name several for the theme that I provided.
Spoiler
Nelly's "Pimp Juice" has "Nellyville" in its lyrics. Eminem's "Cleaning Out My Closet" has "The Eminem Show" in its lyrics. Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better" has "The Spy Who Loved Me" in its lyrics... and incidentally, that's also the title of the film.
If you can't be right, be Fanny.

12. BRAIN DAMAGE - PINK FLOYD

Theme?

I will give you 5 bonus points if you can name another song (with artist) other than the 12 above that fits today's theme....
I DIDN'T GET THIS UNTIL I WROTE DOWN "DARK SIDE OF THE MOON" AS THE TITLE OF THE LAST SONG, REMEMBERED THAT THE SONG HAD A DIFFERENT NAME, AND HAD TO CHANGE IT.

I THINK ALL THESE SONGS HAVE DIFFERENT NAMES FROM THE ALBUMS THEY'RE ON, BUT CONTAIN THE NAME OF THE ALBUM IN THE LYRICS ANYWAY. DEFINITELY TRUE OF #12. LET'S SEE, "TEEN SPIRIT" HAS "NEVERMIND" AND "ROCK OF AGES" HAS "PYROMANIA" THE REST OF 'EM, I DON'T KNOW THE NAME OF THE ALBUM (EXCEPT I BET YOU LEARN IS ON JAGGED LITTLE PILL, BUT I DON'T KNOW THE LYRICS). ANYWAY, THREE IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME.

LET'S SEE -
ELVIS COSTELLO DOES THIS. "UNCOMPLICATE" CONTAINS "BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE". "ALISON" CONTAINS "MY AIM IS TRUE". "BRILLIANT MISTAKE" CONTAINS "KING OF AMERICA"
THE PIXIES DID THIS - "LEVITATE ME" CONTAINS "COME ON PILGRIM" AND "MR GRIEVES" CONTAINS "DOOLITTLE"
THE BEASTIE BOYS' "PUTTING SHAME IN YOUR GAME" CONTAINS "HELLO NASTY"
THE HOLD STEADY'S "STUCK BETWEEN STATIONS" CONTAINS THE LYRICS "BOYS AND GIRLS IN AMERICA"
DIRE STRAITS' "SKATEAWAY" CONTAINS "MAKING MOVIES"
FIREHOSE'S "THE SOFTEST HAMMER" HAS "FROM OHIO" IN IT
DOUG MARTSCH'S "IMPOSSIBLE" HAS "NOW YOU KNOW" IN IT
"OLD FRIENDS" BY SIMON AND GARFUNKEL CONTAINS THE WORD "BOOKENDS". I'M PRETTY SURE THERE'S NO SONG ON THAT ALBUM CALLED "BOOKENDS". THERE IS A "BOOKENDS THEME" BUT I DON'T THINK IT HAS ANY WORDS. AND "SCARBOROUGH FAIR / CANTICLE" CONTAINS "PARSLEY SAGE ROSEMARY AND THYME"
NEIL YOUNG'S "OUT OF THE BLUE" OR "INTO THE BLACK" (I CAN NEVER KEEP THEM STRAIGHT) CONTAINS "RUST NEVER SLEEPS"
THE TALKING HEADS' "GIRLFRIEND IS BETTER" CONTAINS "STOP MAKING SENSE" (THOUGH IT'S A LIVE ALBUM, SO IT MAY NOT COUNT)
WILCO'S "POOR PLACES" CONTAINS "YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT"
I THINK IT'S TRIVIAL, BUT MARTHA WAINWRIGHT (RUFUS' BROTHER, LOUDON'S KID) HAS A SONG "BMFA" ON THE ALBUM "BLOODY MOTHER FUCKING ASSHOLE" WITH THOSE LYRICS IN IT
THE SHINS' "YOUNG PILGRIMS" HAS "CHUTES TOO NARROW" IN IT

I woulda never got this theme in a million years.

I think whoever does get it ought to get 10 JJC points, and I ought to get 10 JJC points for pointing it out.

BRAIN DAMAGE - PINK FLOYD

Theme?
I will give you 5 bonus points if you can name another song (with artist) other than the 12 above that fits today's theme

Believe it or not, I considered doing this EXACT SAME THEME, but could only come up with 6 songs, and four of them were by only two artists. Also amazing is that only ONE of mine is on this list: BRAIN DAMAGE. It's NON-ALBUM-TITLE SONGS that contain the title of the ALBUM in their lyrics. The other 5 I came up with (actually there are 7, but two are so obscure to everyone NOT from Pittsburgh that I couldn't use them):

Dave Mathews Band - "The Dreaming Tree" contains "Before these crowded streets"
Dave Mathews Band - "Ants Marching" contains "Under the table and dreaming"
Ben Folds Five - "The Battle For Who Could Care Less" contains "Whatever and ever, amen"
Ben Folds - "Effington" contains "Way to Normal"
Indigo Girls - "Touch Me, Fall" contains "Swamp Ophelia"

And the two Pittsburgh songs:
The Clarks - "Cigarette" contains "Love gone sour, suspicion and bad debt"
Bill Deasy - "So It Goes" contains "Spring lies waiting"

I Know the Theme!
Spoiler
The theme is clearly Decent Songs By Extremely Bad Looking People. I mean Alanis Morrisette; Horse Face, Nirvana? They look like homeless 18-year-olds. And Will Smith isn't ugly nowadays but back when he was doing Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? The dude looked like Urkel. And have you seen Roger Waters???

As for other songs that could fit this theme: Rock Is Dead by Marilyn Manson for obvious reasons and Deuce by KISS because there's a reason why Gene Simmons had to wear all that makeup...

Spoiler
I'm not one to be a know it all (God knows, as evidenced by my inability to get this theme), but there is a mistake here. Miss Me Blind contains the lyrics "Kissing to be clever" but the song didn't come from that album (I assume that is the theme, that a lyric came from the album from which it was released). It was from Colour By Numbers. BTW, Colour By Numbers has my absolute favorite Culture Club song, unreleased as a single here in the U.S. It's called Victims. If you aren't totally repulsed by Culture Club and haven't heard this song before, give it a try.

Theme?
I think you were trying to find songs that contained the album titles within them, but are not "title songs." Of course, I had to point out the two errors indicated above.

Here's a cheap-ass bonus answer for ya! "Big Time" by Peter Gabriel has the line "So much larger than life" and the album title is "So." So there!

9. If the way that you need
Is too much like greed
Decide if you are rich or you're poor
Miss Me Blind - Culture Club (It is so ironic this is the one I screwed up since this was the first song [actually, video] I ever heard way back in the 80's and noticed... "hey, they just said the album title in the middle of the song!" Of course, as has been pointed out, this song came off the album "Colour By Numbers" and not "Kissing To Be Clever"... and I guess Boy George thinks he's awful damn clever for confusing me like that. Well, not that Boy George didn't like to cause confusion in other ways....)

10. Whatcha gonna tell your brother?
oh oh oh
whatcha gonna tell your father?
I don't know!
Whatcha gonna tell your mother?

Dressed For Success - Roxette (From the album "Look Sharp!")

11. He who gets slapped and he who gets saved,
He who brutalizes the timeless stage.
He is the mongrel, he wants it all,
He lives for relics, hang on the wall.
Foxy Foxy - Rob Zombie (From the album "Educated Horses", an album which for whatever reason VH1 Classic helped Rob pimp when it came out a few years ago, so the video for this song got a lot of airplay.... and I have to say I kinda like the song....)

12. The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Brain Damage - Pink Floyd (From some obscure album you probably never heard of called "Dark Side of the Moon"....)

Theme? - With the obvious exception I noted, they are all songs which contain the title of the album they come fom embedded in the lyrics...

JJC Points:

Marley gets 2 JJC points... and I made sure to include that Marley lyric in #5 just for him to comment on!

mntetn got the 5 point supermax for a bizarre set of answers I thought was funny...

Kroxquo gets 3 JJC points, 2 of which come from his later observation about Weird Al's "In 3-D" album, one of the few cassette tapes we had in the van to play for all those family bowling trips we took all over Illinois back in the early 90's. I think there was another Weird Al cassette, a Ray Stephens one (Yes, it had the squirrel revival song on it), and one frm Tommy James & the Shondells....

TBone gets 2 JJC points... I especially loved the Manson reference on the Rob Zombie song...

Clem gets 3 JJC points for being clem. Had he managed to get an insult in at me, he might have gotten the supermax.....

Fanny gets 3 JJC points for her clever take on the theme... which actually works rather well, though you can make sexual innuendo out of just about anything if you try hard enough (I said hard, huh, huh!)....

starfish gets 8 extra points (I hesitate to call them JJC points since the maximum is 5, but what the hell), which is full theme and bonus credit for catching my mistake on Culture Club....

Saucy gets 5 JJC points for a funny set of BB answers...

Estonut gets 3 JJC points, 1 for not disappointing me on nitpicking whether Too Rye Ay is actually said in Come on Eileen or not, one for noticing my CC error (Since he already got the theme, I can't reward him like starfish), and another for coming up with Big Time as his bonus answer... which I am kicking myself for not noticing to put in the game.....

#25 Post by ToLiveIsToFly » Fri Mar 13, 2009 8:14 am

I meant to mention it yesterday but apparently I forgot - U2 in the 80s was known for pulling their album titles from lyrics from a song on the previous album. I know that "New Years Day", off the War album, contains "under a blood red sky". But that's another live album so I'm not sure if it counts. Maybe they only did that with their live albums.

But so many suggestions and no bonus points? I'd be annoyed if your friend hadn't given me such a nice picture.
