Idol Recap

#1 Post by Sir_Galahad » Tue Feb 17, 2009 9:06 pm

No question in my mind - The top guy is
Spoiler
Danny
and the top girl is
Spoiler
Alexis .
The wild card for tonight will be among
Spoiler
Tatiana, Anoop and Michael.
The rest ranged somewhere between Amateur Hour and Midlinville.

That version of The Police song was atrocious, to my ears.

So what is the deal with this group?

3 go through?

Then what?

Top three from each group of 12 (top male, top female, and next highest vote getter according to Wikipedia), and three judges' picks.

I didn't see any upcoming stars except Danny.

I was not a Danny fan earlier, preferring his friend Jamar. But Danny brought it tonight. He should get through easily, and if not, they will bring him back as a wild card.

I went to wash my face and brush my teeth during the police song.

I came back to hear Simon say something about the winking or something.

I'm betting they'll bring Anoop back too -- he's a good singer and they've never had a Pakistani/Indian performer in the Top 12. Ditto for Scott the blind guy. Not that impressed with Alexis -- she reminded me of Nikki McGibbon from the first season. And isn't she in some reality rehab show now?

Tatiana must be back on her meds.

Did Sanjaya not make it to the top 12?

D'oh!

I guess for some reason I tried to block him out.

Watching the young 17-year old girl sing reminded me of Sanjaya in that how "green" she was as a performer.

I guess I'm the only one not drinking the Danny Kool-Aid. I was completely with Simon on this one - it was good but not great. When Paula and Kara jumped out of their seats I was seriously thinking someone must have goosed them because it certainly couldn't have been that pleasant but forgettable performance.

Alas, I was wrong.

Jackie can sing, but she's just annoying and the clothes were awful and the dancing was spastic.

Ricky was quite a pleasure to (finally!) hear, but this format totally screws him. No way he's top male or even top 3 vote-getter with his utter lack of screen time prior to this. Mini-me asked me to vote for him since he had to go to bed, and I did, for half an hour.

Alexis wasn't great, but she was quite good and cute and the other girls did her a huge favor by sucking out loud.

Country Brent was...yup...forgettable. Simon pegged it right.

Stevie was a total disaster. I so much wanted her to be good, and she picked a young girl song, and just stunk. And stinking when compared to Taylor Swift is really hard to do. She held her composure admirably, poor child.

Anoop was good, and I love him dearly, but he wasn't THAT good and the song was a snoozefest.

Anne Marie was forgettable.

Michael Sarver was kinda bad, but he's a likeable enough guy, which will serve him well in this format.

Casey Carlson was the first genuine train wreck of the season. Wow. What the hell was that, anyway? Your pick of "that": dress, hairdo, song choice, dance, WINK?!? Total package of badness from an adorable girl with a decent voice.

Stephen Fowler was a waste. It should have been Jamar the BFF in his place. Such an unprofessional professional. He has a smooth, easy vibe to his voice and he just blew away the greatest exposure an aspiring performer can get by forgetting lyrics in Hollywood and just being so underwhelming last night.

Tatiana really can sing, but her performance was as uneven as her personality. Looking back at her audition, it appears she's going the Diana DeGarmo route by gaining weight and not knowing how to dress the extra pounds.

I really didn't watch The Second Coming Of David Archuleta because I was already calling Ricky Braddy's number, but of course he sang an inspirational message song. I suppose he sang well, but pointing at the camera to accent "a hero lies in you" made me want to vomit.

So, top male, Danny Archuleta. Top female, Alexis Pink Hair, Red Lipstick (ugh).

Third vote-getter: Michael The Likeable (but marginally talented)

I want Anoop to get the wild card, but the deck is stacked with men this year. Ricky's got the voice, but no buzz to counter Adam, Nate, Blind Scott, Welder Matt, Nick/Normund...etc ad nauseum.

If they give the wild card to Tatiana over Anoop, I really WILL unleash the vomit that rose during Danny's performance....

The wild cards can come from any of the 27 who aren't voted through, so it could be none of this bunch of 12, or one, two or three - not that there are three worthy, but that's how it could go.

The oil rig guy still has my goodwill.

He was not near great last night.

I also did not vote.

I have tuned in Classic Rock (CHOM in MTL, once a much more famous and original station) in the last year because I missed so much of it. Half a dozen Police songs in heavy rotation. The beat of any of them could be used well for toothbrushing.

If making it to the finals were like an archery target, there were a couple of shots last night that (barely) hit the outer ring, and a whole bunch of shots that landed in the ground, into random trees, into a few stray birds, etc. That was really awful.

Danny did well, although he didn't blow me away with the performance. He reminds me of Elvis Costello, although I think Danny has smoother vocals. Alexis is probably the winner among the women -- not because she did anything spectacular, but because the judges lavished praise on her while the other women were, for the most part, train wrecks.

I dislike this format of 36 semifinalists and four weeks of picking out the 12 finalists. Whoever makes it through this week will be screwed because we won't see them again for a month, by which time we'll have forgotten all about them. (This was the reason they went away] from this format a few years ago. Contestants were complaining, and rightly so.) Also, one bad song choice can ruin even the best of singers. Anybody remember David Cook singing "Happy Together" for his first semifinal song last year? It blew chow. But, he survived that week and soon started picking better songs and building momentum.

Most of those arrows last night would've been better off staying in their respective quivers.
