Roger Goodell: NFL Marketing Genius...NOT

The NFL uses a military color guard to present the colors before the National Anthem at the Super Bowl.

In years past, the guard was allowed to stay and watch the game.

This year, they are not- they will be escorted out after the Anthem (somehow, I bet the singer, Jennifer Hudson, will get to stay, though).

Just when I think Roger can't do anything dumber...he makes Larry Bud Selig look like a MENSA member!

This won't happen when Condi Rice is commissioner.
I am about 25% sure of this.

I predict that now that there has been a big public stink, the NFL will issue a mea culpa, talk about how much they support our Armed Forces in any way they can, say that it's always been their policy to take care of the color guard, and claim that the people who told the press originally that the color guard wouldn't be allowed to watch the game were either confused or misinformed.

I second that prediction.

I think SSS and BiT will be proven correct in this case. The NFL is starting to do more and more things I don't like.
I felt the change

The NFL is claiming that the color guard has not previously been allowed to stay in the stadium for the Super Bowl. The original story quoted in this thread had the mom relaying that her son had previously been allowed to stay in stadiums and watch games but it does not say if those were Super Bowls or not.

"The members of the Color Guard have always been our guests at a Super Bowl party in a compound on the stadium grounds where they watch the game on big-screen TVs and enjoy food and beverage," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told us via e-mail. "That is how we have done it every year.

[...]"The military provides an intra-service Color Guard as part of our pre-game tribute to the military that also includes the military fly-over of the stadium," Aiello said. "Then we arrange a place for the Color Guard to watch the game along with other pre-game and halftime show participants (more than 2,000 people)."

Well- if that's the case....that might actually be better for them.

They're still in the thick of things and get better food and booze!

Let's see.... have a lavish spread and free drinks with Bruce Springsteen and all the babes taking part in the show vs. rubbing elbows with a bunch of drunken Steeler fans in the corner of the endzone.

That's a tough call.

And now, of course, the NFL is saying that the color guard will be allowed to stay inside the stadium and watch the game. Despite the past practice which the NFL claims no one ever complained about.

So I guess the moral is: Start a story with what sounds like a plausible travesty by some powerful, established organization without doing enough research to determine whether the travesty is true or not, get everyone riled up about it, take shots at easy targets, and eventually the "offending" organization will change their policy.

Re-read this thread and look at the shots taken at the NFL and Goodell based on a blogger's contention. I'm not trying to pick on individual people but sometimes judgment should be reserved just a bit.
