Best Buy rant

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Thu Jan 22, 2009 9:15 am

[This is just a little rant at one of those idiotic annoyances of life. Feel free to ignore it.]

So, I had a $20 Reward Zone voucher from having bought my PC at Best Buy last year. The voucher was going to expire in a few days, so I went shopping last evening and found a set of DVDs from the 3rd season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, on sale for $19.99. I take it to the cashier.

First problem is that the voucher doesn't pay for the sales tax. An annoyance, but I'm willing to pay cash to cover the tax.

But wait! Before tax, the total is only $19.99. And the computer will not accept the voucher for any total less that $20! The cashier asks if I'd like to buy a water or something, to boost the total above the magic threshold.

Best Buy won't let me give them $20 for a $19.99 purchase and just say "Keep the change"? That'd be pure profit for their bottom line!

Odds are that the cashier either didn't know how or didn't have the authority to override the transaction. If you wanted to pursue it further, you'd probably need to get a manager there in either event.

The $500 I thought we were getting back for our TVs turned into $650.

I love Best Buy.

Marley, I hate that too.

Here's what I would do: say, "Can I return items if Ihave the receipt and they're unopened?" Buy the item you want plus another item. Use the gift card.

Then say, "Oops! I'd like to return the other item."

I don't know about that - when Circuit City moved to their un-trained low-cost sales force it became pretty painful to shop there.

Of course we don't have to worry about that any longer. But without them around to kepp Best Buy honest, I wonder what Best Buy will turn into.

The Buy More. Watch for the rotund manager, the nerdy guy at the help desk and the girl in the short skirt and spike heels.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Best Buy is making a big deal in its TV commercials about the Geek Squad and how they are able to answer questions and help install equipment. That's the advantage they have over Amazon on the one hand and Wal-Mart and Costco on the other. If they want to hire Wal Mart level employees, they'll wind up just like Circuit City.

While that was a fairly good rant regarding a buying experience (and I've read quite a number). I think it is a tad egotistical to call it the best one.

I've lost "free" airline voucher money under this same kind of deal.

"We're sorry for your inconvenience; use this $30.00 voucher on any fare over $250.00".

So of course you need to find a $250.00 or higher fare before the voucher expires. But wait! They mean "$250.00" before they've added on all those airport fees etc.

Needless to say, I was given this voucher in an era, not so many moons ago, where almost identical flights had either $230.00 seats or $300.00 seats. I wasn't going to book a $300.00 flight just so I could use my voucher, & get it for $270.00. When I could have just booked a $230.00 seat to begin with. Before about $20.00 of airport fees got added on, of course. Bringing it up to $250.00 anyway.

Don't let any member of the Geek Squad within 100 yards of your computer! They are pond scum.

We got a Best Buy here about a year ago. After my first two visits, I came to the realization that their name is very misleading. (in our market anyway)
