First manager of the SD Padres, and a career baseball guy.

I'd forgotten about the Clay Kirby near no hitter.

I tried to find my old Astros pennant to take a photo of for a different avatar, but couldn't locate it.

My Preston Gomez story: I was 9 years old in 1973 when my dad took me (and others) to a baseball game. It was Astros vs. Giants at Candlestick. The Astros had a cooler looking pennant than the Giants and since my dad is originally from Cincinnati he didn't care if I had a souvenir from the road team.

We were early enough for batting practice. One of the Astros was signing autographs near the visitor's bullpen. I lowered my pennant and the guy signed it. I asked my dad who signed it and he told me it was Preston Gomez. That was the first autograph I ever obtained.

36 years later it's sad to see Preston Gomez passed, but he had a great career in baseball and he's not forgotten.
