Cool website question ...

#1 Post by dimmzy » Thu Jan 08, 2009 1:42 pm

Hi, everybody!

In a couple of weeks, I am teaching a Continuing Ed course on "Surfing the Net for Fun and Profit!" I am wondering if you folks have any favorites I should look into ...

I have all the usual for profit (eBay, amazon, craigslist)

For fun (the BORED!, plus some travel sites, contest sites)

For social networking (facebook, myspace, youtube)

and I just wondered if you had any good ones that I should check out. The class will probably be composed of internet beginners/intermediate uses and considering my school district population, a lot of young retirees.

Thanks in advance! I will be happy to share credit--and show how you can ask a question on a message board and get answers! :D

That depends on how tolerant they are of...colorful? salty? language.

I love Television Without Pity, but it's also Television Without Auto-Censorship.

Thanks! I've heard about that one, but had forgotten it.

I think there's a similar one for books too ...

I'll be printing out a list, so that's perfect.

check out Voicethread. I think it's going to be the next big thing.
browse through the gallery as well as the explanation of what a Voice Thread is. . .

I'm building one now for school. I'll post when it's finished so you can comment.

Game sites like Sploofus or Pogo. I also enjoy Nuggets.com, but maybe that's just me.....

I like The Superficial. Another one rated somewhat R, but funny anyway.

If your students are relatively new to the internet, then make double-certain that they know about snopes.com.

For mug shots of the best and brightest (and drunkest and stupidest), thesmokinggun.com is fabu.

Thanks again! I LOVE thesmokinggun and snopes!

Another friend recommended stumbleupon ...

I'm also big on www.contestgirl.com (for entering online contests).

My nephews also told me about hulu.com (for legally viewing TV shows)

I'll have to post my completed list somewhere ...

Yep, that's a good site!

All of us could volunteer a long list of our favorite sites, but it's really a question that would have to be addressed to each of your students: What are their general interests? What, specifically, are they interested in doing on the web?

For every item they could list, we could come up with some customized answers.
