Does Apple really think they're getting a good ROI by advertising iPhones?
Doesn't everyone who wants what it does already have one or have one on their Christmas list?
If they want to sell more, they need to come up with a "killer app".

I'm in the same situation as PSM, having gotten a new 2-year Verizon contract while the iPhone was new. As far as playing iPod music and video, I already have an iPod nano.
Today's news is that Verizon is 'opening up' and allowing those with unlocked Sprint or Verizon-compatible phones to use Verizon service. However, the unlocked iPhones are incompatible with Verizon's service.
