Lipstick on his collar...

#1 Post by marriedmefliesfree » Fri Dec 19, 2008 3:48 pm

...and unfortunately, it was mine!

There are only a few things in this world that I am fanatical about. Lazy mo-fo's who don't put shopping carts in the corral...crap food....and checking pockets before doing the wash. Being the time-crunched person that I am this week, I ignored my own rule. I washed *AND DRIED* a whole load of laundry with a brand new tube of my favorite burgundy lipstick. To reinforce just how tragic this was, I'll add that the lipstick just happened to be in the pocket of a brand new pair of (totally awesome) pants that had been worn only once. I'd done this once before many years ago, and had been unable to salvage anything - and it was then that I became a fanatical pocket-checker.

My parents were coming in for a visit that night, I was still getting the house back in order after the Italy trip, and I was alone with Nina as my hubster was in Japan. The luxury of time, I did not have. I just tossed most of the items....socks, underwear, that sort of thing. A couple of formerly white t-shirts that looked as though someone had been murdered in them. But some of the things just had to be saved. I scrubbed the hell out of every spot with Shout, cursing all the while, until the bottle was dry. I let that digest for a few, then soaked them in a double dose of Oxy-Clean...(Is it hot or cold for stains? I can never remember, and decided to just split the difference...) Rinsed and soaked again. Then washed them with more Oxy-Clean and All Free and Clear detergent. I was ransacking the cabinet for anything that could help, and even sprinkled in some baking soda for the hell of it.

After retrieving my parents from the airport, I checked the machine. The cycle was done. I held my breath and started checking all of those spots. Success! Most spots were gone, but I guess I'd used so much detergent that the rinse cycle couldn't get the Shout out where I'd used it most liberally. Another complete wash cycle, sans soap, and they were clean. When NN got home, I relayed the story and defied him to find a single burgundy spot on any of the items.

I don't know if it was the Shout or the Oxy-Clean or the furious praying during the final rinse, but it worked! I feel like a reborn pocket-checking domestic goddess...a true believer in the power of retail cleansers, ready to tackle any stain. I'd never used Oxy-Clean before Nina, but it has worked wonders on the sunshine yellow breasfed poop stains she likes to mark her territory with. Billy Mayes, you are my hero.

WOW! MHO, It was most likely the OxyClean.

Both of my kids refused bibs - OxyClean is my best friend.

Guess you should maybe open a laundromat!!

I once got caught with a tube of lipstick in one of my suit coats. It was when we were at a wedding in California. My darling daughter Beth found it (she was 7 or so at the time) on the floor and figured mom could use it. So she put it in my coat pocket.

I don't go through pockets before I do laundry. I don't do much laundry anymore. :D

That's a good strategy to avoid the laundry room.
