Lyrically Speaking Day 18 - 12/4/08

#1 Post by KillerTomato » Thu Dec 04, 2008 5:20 am

Both yesterday's and today's games will remain open until noon Eastern tomorrow.

Today's game is another installment of "I'M A GENIUS!" I started with song #1 below, put that into the Genius feature of my iPod and iTunes, and got recommended for me the other 14 songs, based on genre, chord structure, year released, etc. It's all very mystical and scary, frankly. This time, I'm not bothering to ask which are on my iPod, since all but 2 of the songs below are. What I will say is that not only is #1 my personal favorite on this list, but it's also one of my "signature" karaoke songs when I happen to get drunk enough to force others to listen to me sing in public.

Anyway, one point each for artist and title, and as usual, being funny is better than being wrong.

1. Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think, I thought, I saw you try

2. Motion in the ocean
His air hose broke
Lots of trouble, lots of bubble
He was in a jam
He's in a giant clam

3. Tell me what you've got in mind
'Cause we're runnin' out of time
Won't you ever set me free
This waiting 'round is killing me

4. Can you see them
See right through them
They have no shield
No secrets to reveal

5. It's a lesson to me
The eagles and the beggars and the seas
The ABCs we must all face
Try to keep a little grace

6. Marry him, or marry me
I'm the one who loves you baby, can't you see?
Ain't got no future or family tree

7. Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last! They took your life

8. The ice age is coming
The sun is zooming in
Meltdown expected
The wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear

9. Show me 'round your fruitcage
'Cause I will be your honeybee
Open up your fruitcage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be

10. He ain't got no distractions
Can't hear no buzzers and bells
Don't see lights a-flashing
Plays by sense of smell

11. Clearly I remember pickin' on the boy
Seemed a harmless little fuck
Oooo, but we unleashed a lion
Gnashed his teeth and bit the recess lady's breast

12. He got the action, he got the motion
Yeah, the boy can play
Dedication, devotion
Turning all the night time into the day

13. Here's your ticket, pack your bags
Time for jumpin' overboard
Transportation isn't here
Close enough but not too far
Maybe you know where you are

14. You.....can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
We'll be there in just a while
If you follow me

15. (SONG TITLE) I'd buy you a green dress
(But not a real green dress, that's cruel)
(SONG TITLE) Well, I'd buy you some art
(A Picasso, or a Garfunkel)
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Note that me knowing what the song is does NOT imply that I think it is a good song. For the record, 1, 7, 10, 12, 13 and 14 are done by good or great artists, but they're not in the upper echelon of that artist's songs. 2 might be that artist's best song - it's decent and listenable, but not good enough that I'd ever listen to it intentionally. 4 and 9 are pretty good songs by pretty good artists. 5, 6, 11 and 15 are terrible songs by terrible artists. 8 is an iconic song by a band in my top 10. It's a great song, but they've done many, many better ones.

I hope it's okay to answer this one first. Since you said how killer (ha!) yesterday's was, I just glanced at it, recognized several songs right off, but haven't worked on the connection stuff yet. But I love Genius Day, so I can't wait! (Coincidentally enough, I was wearing my Jenius. shirt yesterday.)
Not as bad as I'd feared
1. Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think, I thought, I saw you try

Losing My Religion - Uh oh. I only know three REM songs, so this doesn't bode well for the Genius selections (although I like all three of them.....don't know why I never got into REM.)

2. Motion in the ocean
His air hose broke
Lots of trouble, lots of bubble
He was in a jam
He's in a giant clam

Rock Lobster - B52s

3. Tell me what you've got in mind
'Cause we're runnin' out of time
Won't you ever set me free
This waiting 'round is killing me

She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals

4. Can you see them
See right through them
They have no shield
No secrets to reveal

Our Lips are Sealed - The Go Gos

5. It's a lesson to me
The eagles and the beggars and the seas
The ABCs we must all face
Try to keep a little grace

Touch of Grey - Grateful Dead

6. Marry him, or marry me
I'm the one who loves you baby, can't you see?
Ain't got no future or family tree

This Prop 8 Shit is Killing Me - Neil Patrick Harris f/Melissa Etheridge

7. Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last! They took your life

Pride in the Name of Love - U2

8. The ice age is coming
The sun is zooming in
Meltdown expected
The wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear

The Future's So Bright - Timbuk2

9. Show me 'round your fruitcage
'Cause I will be your honeybee
Open up your fruitcage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be

The Buzz of Sweet, Fruity Love - The Honeydrippers

10. He ain't got no distractions
Can't hear no buzzers and bells
Don't see lights a-flashing
Plays by sense of smell

Pinball Wizard - Elton John

11. Clearly I remember pickin' on the boy
Seemed a harmless little fuck
Oooo, but we unleashed a lion
Gnashed his teeth and bit the recess lady's breast

Jeremy - Pearl Jam (wasn't it the lunch lady's breast?)

12. He got the action, he got the motion
Yeah, the boy can play
Dedication, devotion
Turning all the night time into the day

Walk of Life - Dire Straits

13. Here's your ticket, pack your bags
Time for jumpin' overboard
Transportation isn't here
Close enough but not too far
Maybe you know where you are

Hobos Waiting on a Train - The Lackadaisical Stumblebums

14. You.....can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
We'll be there in just a while
If you follow me

Baby Got Carjacked - Sir Drivealot

15. (SONG TITLE) I'd buy you a green dress
(But not a real green dress, that's cruel)
(SONG TITLE) Well, I'd buy you some art
(A Picasso, or a Garfunkel)

If I Had $1,000,000 - Bare Naked Ladies
We, the HK Brigade, do hereby salute you, Marley, for your steadfast devotion to ontopicosity. Well done, sir!

Losing My Religion/REM
2. Motion in the ocean

3. Tell me what you've got in mind

The ABCs we must all face
Try to keep a little grace

6. Marry him, or marry me

Ain't got no future or family tree

7. Early morning, April 4
