Computer Problem

Yesterday we bought a copy of Office 2007 for Home and Student. (Licensed for three computers)

I installed it on Jeff's computer and there were no issues.

When I installed the program on my computer, the process was fine. When I open Powerpoint, Excel, Word, or One Note a new version of the program opens and I get a message that says "Microsoft Office Excel (or Word or Powerpoint) has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application."

I completely uninstalled Office 2003. When I got the problem I uninstalled Office 2007 and tried installing it again and got the same message "Microsoft Office Excel (or Word or Powerpoint) has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application."

I called Technical support for Windows and they had me deleted the software, go through the registry line by line and delete lines of code, then reinstall the software again. (They had me download it from their site.)

This still didn't fix the problem.

Next they told me to create a new user for Windows (Administrator) and use the program with the new user. That didn't work either. By this time it was 10:00 and they signed off.

I am going to call Microsoft again today, but does anyone else have any other suggestions that I can try. I am running 64 bit Vista.

I have no advice. I do have sympathy for your plight. Hope you get the advice that does the trick.

I've put off getting a laptop for Stephen for a couple of reasons, one being Vista needing to settle in and resolve its issues before I buy anything new, and the other being we've already installed Office 2007 on all three computers and I don't feel like shelling out for ANOTHER copy. So I have no experience with Vista even though I've done the Office deal three times. Very helpfully unhelpful I am.

For the record, Stephen loathes the Macs at school with the fire of a thousand nuns. Detests. Despises. Every one of them. So I know it's not just one particular one. If the only ones available during his free time are Macs, he'll wait to come home to finish his work. And we have crappy old slow computers here. Buying him a Mac is not an option.

I feel so frustrated when I have to deal with stuff like this because I don't know what I am doing and I have to rely on people that I don't know who are probably making minimum wage and I feel like I am wasting so much time (four hours yesterday!) trying things out that don't work.

I can't help you but I can reiterate that Microsoft products eventually all suck. You have my sympathy.

Did you run Microsoft Office Diagnostics?

Also, try turning off UAC (User Account Control) and see if you can run the apps.

That's a big problem and not just with Office. Somehow the user permissions become screwed up. If there's a fix for that, no one has found it yet.

UAC is a major PITA and doesn't really protect you because you become so accustomed to always clicking "Yes" that you'd let malware run.
