Intolerant Bigots

#1 Post by Beebs52 » Fri Nov 07, 2008 8:58 pm

Definition of a bigot:
One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ

Definition of intolerant:
unwilling to tolerate difference of opinion
illiberal: narrow-minded about cherished opinions

Definition of tolerate:
digest: put up with something or somebody unpleasant; "I cannot bear his constant criticism"; "The new secretary had to endure a lot of ...
recognize and respect (rights and beliefs of others); "We must tolerate the religions of others"
have a tolerance for a poison or strong drug or pathogen or environmental condition; "The patient does not tolerate the anti-inflammatory drugs we gave him"
allow: allow the presence of or allow (an activity) without opposing or prohibiting; "We don't allow dogs here"; "Children are not permitted beyond this point"; "We cannot tolerate smoking in the hospital"

I'd say that covers pretty much many of us at times. On all sides.
Well, then

Is it OK to be intolerant of bigots?

It's okay. This wasn't meant to be some sort of lightning rod post. Just a statement on my observation of most human beings I know, including me, both cyberly and in person. So now no one has to respond in this thread and can go about their business realizing that I have, once again, laid a giant turd that I didn't mean to. Honestly. It wasn't a turd post.

As opposed to the actual turds that Beebs just dropped in the bedroom as I posted the previous post. Redolent and wafting they were. Yessir.

Ooh. A response! I guess it depends on their bigotry, no?

If they're anti-shoe, I dunno. I have a low tolerance for that sort.

I avoid this problem by simply hating everybody.

Geoffrey, a student at UCLA and regular Rod 2.0 reader, joined the massive protest outside the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood. Geoffrey was called the n-word at least twice.

It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU NIGGER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a FAGGOT, I will call you a nigger. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple...me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the niggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
