Celebrity 5th Grader

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Fri Nov 16, 2007 7:35 am

Kellie Pickler, a runner-up from American Idol (or so I gather) was the contestant last night. Sheesh!
Spoiler
Budapest is the capital of what European country?

Kellie's reasoning included the following choice nuggets of wisdom:

"Wait a minute. I thought Europe was a country?"

"Don't they speak French there?"

"I don't think France is a country, but I'm just going to say France."

"Hung(a)ry? I've never even heard of that! I've heard of Turkey."

I'm so glad they've apparently run out of "celebrities"; they were back to a regular contestant when Kellie walked. Not that he was much brighter...

**ADDED** I think that having Kelly on as a "celebrity" is pushing the boundaries of the definition of the term.

And of course there was this scintillating display of reason:
Spoiler
On the question, "The piccolo is a member of which family?" her rationale for thinking it was "percussion" was that both started with "P" - the same rationale she employed to - astonishingly - figure out which person in a list of three was a president (Pierce).
I was trying to figure out whether the last contestant was a celebrity or not - evidently not.

The sad thing is that she would have made it onto the show even if she wasn't a celebrity.

There was a reason that these people were voted off "American Idol": It's cuz America wants these people to disappear from civilization.

Yeah.

Kellie also made history by going ahead and admitting, "I'm not smarter than a 5th Grader," before she was ever asked a question! Just to get it out the way, you know.

Jeff Foxworthy was cruel and made her say it again, when she was finished.

I will laugh at that one all the way to the bank. I will bring you even more pitiful, misguided, young people in a few months, and you will enjoy their inanity and screeching almost as much as you enjoy my warm, pithy comments...
I find you people utterly boring!

You will have to wait a bit for that to happen to Miss Pickler. She has a nice career going in Nashville, with a couple of hits already.

I only watched the first episode of this (the one with Regis). It sounds like I didn't miss much.
I'm just a game show nerd.

I think a lot of Kellie Pickler's schtick is an act, or at the very least a defense mechanism. She's too good at it to have thought it up just for Idol, but she definitely milked the "po' lil' ol' country girl" thing for all it was worth.

As far as whether she is a celebrity, she's had two Top Ten country singles and a top ten album on the Billboard charts. She has a starring role in a sitcom in development, she was nominated for several CMA awards this year, and she has worked almost as hard at charity events (which admittedly are career-builders in some sense) as she has at building her own career.

In my book, she compares pretty favorably as a celebrity with the likes of Billy Bush. Not to mention that her TV persona fits in perfectly with the theme of the show.

Don't get me wrong, I"m not a Pickler fan, but she deserved her place on this show, at least.

I was wondering about that. It just seems odd that she'd start by saying "We're going to kill this 'blonde' stereotype," and then go on to give an Oscar-worthy performance in the role.

And there's kidding around during the bantering and then there's getting serious enough to answer a few questions and earn your charity some major bucks. $50K is chickenfeed on this show, with the lifelines they're given.

Kellie did know, all on her own, the answer to the 2nd Grade Foreign Language question, "'Bonjour' is a greeting in what language?" She'd just recently had a Frenchman say that to her in an airport.

To which she suavely replied, "Hey!" :P
