A thought crossed my mind

#1 Post by gotribego26 » Tue Oct 28, 2008 9:35 pm

I've seen the steady deterioration of our local fishwrapper as a reader. What I've seen is nothing compared to Skoop's view.

It seems like in the next few years we will see papers start to go away - I think it is likely that in the next 5 or 10 years we will see major metro areas lose their daily newspaper.

I just don't think the business model can last much longer. It will be interesting to see if they can change enough to sustain themselves or if they will start going away.

RIP The Christian Science Monitor. :(

Don't remember when they cease publication. Good grief . . . a hundred years old.

I live in a small town and our newspaper is the worst ever.
Then there's my paper carrier who refuses to put the paper in the paper box on
the mailbox. It was raining Friday and the paper weighed at least 5lbs when I
got it. It went straight to the trash.

I can pretty much find what I want on their website, so I'm probably going to
not renew when it comes up again. They just had a price increase as well.

The whole model is dying. If we can get what we need online and not need longer in-depth pieces, the model is shot. That's all newspapers had to offer, was investigative or feature pieces on local stories that no one else could do. Soon enough those stories will not be told.

For me newspapers offer one thing - portability. Yes, I know about iPhones and Internet-enabled cell phones, but the cost is higher than I'm willing to pay. I like the convenience of being able to take the newspaper with me on the bus, or in the car, or to be able to read it during lunch. And I like the crossword puzzle, which is another thing that's hard to do electronically. Call me old-fashioned but I still read the paper from back to front each day.

A thought has no trouble crossing my mind--nothing to stop its forward progress! :P

I'm still a newspaper junkie. My dad had switched to reading the paper online but doing my Sudoku and cryptogram puzzles. Now he doesn't have cable internet anymore, so he just comes over and takes my whole paper. So they have the same number of readers with half the subscribers, sadly.

But you can't stuff corpses for your haunted house with a computer! I mean, you could, but it would be lumpy and expensive....
