Do you like Motown Music??

#1 Post by T_Bone0806 » Sat Oct 25, 2008 6:19 pm

Then check out the cd "The Way I See It" by Raphael Saddiq, former Tony! Toni! Tone! vocalist. The songs on this disc channel Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder (who contributes some of his unmistakable harmonica to a track)..and even throws in a little Jackie Wilson influence for good measure. This stuff sounds JUST like it came out in 1965..and the musicians even emulate the legendary Motown house band, The Funk Brothers.

The ONLY bum track on the disc comes at the end, when, in an apparent attempt for relevency (and airplay?), Saadiq reprises one of the tracks with a rap by Jay-Z. This misguided and unnecessary offering sticks out like a VERY sore thumb compared to the rest of the disc. Easily fixed if you're a crotchety old hip-hop/rap hater like me..I just stop the disc before the track or program it out.

But I loves me my Motown..and this album makes it feel like '65 all over again. Highly recommended if you were/are into "The Sound of Young America", as their old slogan called it.

My music guru. I have had a long spate of non music listening and you just made me want to go get that CD. Tomorrow may be a very pleasant day. Thanks!
Well, then

Saadiq opened for Joss Stone during her tour through these parts in the summer of 2007. I think he produced/helped produce her album that she was showcasing. He was one of the better opening acts of the hundreds I've seen.

Joss does a duet with him on this disc as well.

At some point I shall endeavor to send out a sampler of some good things you may like. I will be doing my annual update for Skoop soon, so a Beebs project can easily be added.
