Movie Character That Obama Reminds Me Of

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Sun Sep 28, 2008 8:57 am

It took me a while to place this, but Barack Obama is essentially the real life version of Reverend Deke O'Malley, Calvin Lockhart's character in one of the best blaxploitation films ever made, Cotton Comes to Harlem.

For those (and I'm sure it's most people) unfamiliar with the film, O'Malley is a handsome, well dressed, smooth and powerful speaker who pretends to be the reverend of a new church. He is raising money by taking "deposits" from the poor people in the neighborhood with the promise that the money will be used to build a boat that will take them all back to Africa which he has depicted as a tropical paradise (I'm not making this up). Of course, there is no boat being built and the money is going to make him rich.

The heroes, more correctly, anti-heroes are a couple of black cops who are themselves somewhat corrupt and prone to cut corners. They despise O'Malley, far more than the other crooks they deal with, because he is preying on the members of their own community instead of stealing from other crooks or the establishment.

The reason I think many of those of us are so strongly opposed to Obama is that he is victimizing the Democratic party more than anything else. There was no boat to Africa and there will be no progressive paradise under Obama, just a narcissistic self-focused administration that will probably turn the first major crisis into a gigantic disaster, allowing the Republicans to paint Obama as typical of all Democrats.

BTW, if you ever get a chance to see Cotton Comes to Harlem on TV or video, do so. It's a good action piece and a very funny film to boot.

From the way that he was talking at the debate, he reminds me more of Dave from the movie Dave.

Fortunately, there aren't very many of you. He's not victimized the Democratic party - he's reinvigorated it.

Seriously, what are you going to do should he win? It's a serious possibility - you should start making a contingency plan.

There are many of us, several million in fact. He hasn't "invigorated" the party; he has divided it as deeply as it as ever been.

After Carter, it took 26 years for the Democratic party to undo the damage he caused. And he was a well meaning, honest, ethical, principled man who was just over his head.

Obama is none of those things. And if he wins the existing Democratic power structure in Congress, Reid and Pelosi, will remain in place. They are two of the most useless "leaders" the party has seen since, well, Jimmy Carter. With them falling all over themselves to rubber stamp anything Obama says or does, there will be a rush to pass meaningless legislation that changes very little but will be lauded as the greatest reforms since the New Deal.

Until the first scandal or crisis, and there will be a lot of people with sharp knives out for Obama. The Republicans will correctly blame the Democratic administration for whatever goes wrong and the tide will start turning in the 2010 elections. Some of the people Obama has alienated like me will try to stay with the party and repair the damage. Many others have abandoned it for good.

You're just flat out wrong, as much as you'd like to believe otherwise. You're part of a very small minority of Democrats.

Find me a recent poll that breaks down Obama's favourable versus unfavourable ratings among Democrats before you make these kind of assertions. The last poll I've seen has Obama's favourable/unfavourable rating at +18% among *all* voters.

15QA is correct. People all over Colorado are working hard for Democratic candidates from President all the way down the ticket in record numbers. I've never seen anything like it. Everyone locally who actively supported Clinton now supports Obama. They're shuddering at the idea of four years of McSame. I'm sure it's the same all over the country.

I'm glad he's divided the party. We don't want people like you in it.

Hey! Can this 'we' crap, buddy!

I am a democrat and I support Obama, but this 'love it or leave it' bull has been one of the most infuriating things about the Republican party for 20+ years. I don't need any Democrats making the same noises. And I sure as hell don't need them claiming to speak for me.

SSS, I don't agree with you in this case, but you are entitled to your opinion and you are welcome to stay in MY democratic party.

Yet again, SSS clearly demonstatrates he cannot and will not get past the fact that Obama beat Hillary.

I have seen the movie--the comparison is ridiculous.
