Don't worry....bdm is the only "tool".

When you view your post there should be an edit button in the upper right hand corner. I think.

There should be an "edit" button above your post. Click on that and the edit window should open with the contents of that message. Highlight everything with your mouse, then click the "Spoiler" button to insert the spoiler tags around that, then click "Submit".

I thought the contestant was a bit of a jerk. At least twice Meredith saved his ass in the final seconds while he was jabbering away and not paying attention to the clock. His response was not, "Thanks for saving me from my own carelessness." Instead, he chastised her and said he wasn't worried, so she shouldn't be worried.

Today's question that's in question, as provided by Bob Juch:

Which US state has the largest ferry system?
I haven't seen the program yet, but if things went down the way it's been discussed in the spoilers, there's going to be a problem:
Spoiler
It's been implied Massachusetts has the nation's largest ferry system in the discussion. Washington claims the crown:

It's probably going to depend on someone's definition of "largest". I'd plan on seeing this contestant again in the future.

The actual question:

According to the American Public Transportation Association, what U.S. state is home to the nation's largest ferry system?

The answer is Washington.

Spoiler
You'll see this contestant again in the future, but only because he is the carryover to tomorrow's episode.

I don't think there's any big problem with this question. The guy called Ogi for help, and he said he was leaning toward Washington, but wasn't 100% sure. The contestant went with Washington and was correct.

I was in Seattle last year and saw the extensive ferry infrastructure in the area. I have every reason to believe that Washington is the correct answer. The contestant got it right, so there is no controversy. I don't recall the exact wording of the question, so I don't know if there's some way of measuring "largest" where the answer would be something other than Washington.

Spoiler
From http://www.ntsb.gov/speeches/rosenker/mvr051108.htm

According to the National Ferry Database, ferries operate in 40 of the 50 States and in some territories. Statistics from the American Public Transportation Association show that ferries operated by 42 agencies carried nearly 58 million passengers in 2002 and that annual ferry ridership exceeds 1 million in five urban areas (Seattle, New York City, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Boston). The largest ferry system in the United States, in terms of both ridership and vessel size, is the Washington State Ferries, which is owned and operated by the Washington State Department of Transportation. The ferries operate under a comprehensive safety management system that specifies procedures for the entire fleet, for each vessel, and for each route. The five largest ferry systems are: Washington State Ferries; Staten Island Ferry; San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority (currently has no authority over existing commuter ferry operations); Louisiana Department of Transportation, Crescent City Connection Division; and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (Harbor Express and Boston Harbor Cruises).

That's what I try to do, too. But since the transcripts are never a word-for-word record of all the bantering, there's always the opportunity for a little subjectivity to creep into deciding what's important or interesting to include. And it sounds like today's show will be one of those times.

You're right - the comments seemed to imply to me that Massachusetts was the correct answer. I was shocked it wasn't Washington, so I went out to verify it.

Now I can relax.

Spoiler

The ferry question stinketh. I suppose as an Internet person I should call the question nondisambiguated. Hey, what a long word! And it has a slight shade of difference from "ambiguous"! And it has been used about four times previously on the Internet!

More to come in the transcript thread.

I may have been the one responsible for the implication. Not sure - I didn't make anything clear on purpose and put the spoiler tag, thinking that whoever read it would have already seen the show.

Sorry for my contribution to the confusion.
