After the insurance adjustor informed us that our car was going to be totalled, I wondered what elwing and I would do for transportation. We really liked Shadowfax but the likelihood of being able to replace it in a reasonable amount of time seemed slim - Toyota dealerships in the area have waiting lists of from 6 to 9 months and used Prii (if available) are selling for a premium - one dealership had a 2005 model available for over $20,000, and another dealership had a 2007 model for over $30,000. But my beloved elwing was not deterred by this; she did some checking online and found that the dealership from which we purchased Shadowfax indicated on their Web site that they had three (!!!!) Prii available, so she called the dealership. The salesman with whom she spoke did some checking and was evidently surprised to find that they did indeed have three on the lot, but two of them had already been sold. elwing explained our situation to him and he said that if we could get to the dealership that evening he would try to hold the Prius for us. So elwing left work early and we raced over to the dealership. Sure enough, there it was, a "Barcelona Red" 2008 Prius (red was the color we wanted for our original Prius, but chose to take the silver one because we could get it sooner). We explained the financial situation to them and they agreed to set us up with a "back end contract", which meant that we could take the car right then, then pay it off with the settlement money from the insurance company and the loan from the credit union (the dealership offered us a loan at 8.25%, which we declined). So we left the lot with me behind the wheel of our new Prius. It's the basic model, just as Shadowfax was - with the exception of the backup camera.
Oh, and as for the name, Vingelot was the name of the vessel that Earendel sailed into the Undying Lands to seek the aid of the Valar against Morgoth, carrying with him one of the silmarils. He was successful in his endeavor, but the Valar had decreed that no one setting foot on the Undying Lands could return to Middle-earth, so they placed him in the heavens, the silmaril on his brow, as a shining light and source of hope for the inhabitants of Middle-earth. His beloved wife, Elwing, was transformed into a seagull so that she could fly out to meet him. That story is depicted in my avatar, BTW. Earendel is the Elvish equivalent of Venus, the morning star.
