Did you have your coffe fix today

#1 Post by macrae1234 » Thu Nov 08, 2007 4:08 pm

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - The windy city is the most wired, according to a survey that showed people in Chicago are the most caffeinated in the United States.

Chicagoans eat more chocolate and drink more cola than other U.S. urbanites, and are among the top consumers of energy drinks and coffee.

They are also likely to say caffeine is good for you, according to the poll conducted by Prince Market Research.

Tampa, Miami, Phoenix and Atlanta rounded out the top five most caffeinated cities, while residents of San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York, Detroit and Baltimore consumed the least caffeine.

"It's surprising perhaps that some places you may think have a lot of hustle and bustle like San Francisco, Philadelphia and New York, were the least caffeinated cities," said Todd Smith, a spokesman for HealthSaver, a healthcare discount service that commissioned the poll.

The survey looked at consumption of coffee, tea, chocolate, sodas, energy drinks and caffeine pills in 20 major cities in the United States by interviewing 2,000 people.

Seattle took the top spot in just caffeinated coffee consumption. Nearly 60 percent of residents in the city said coffee would be the most difficult caffeine product to give up.

The growing popularity of "high-end" coffees, energy drinks and green tea has added to more caffeine consumption around the world, according to HealthSaver.
Half of all the people questioned in the poll said they drank coffee every day, followed by 21 percent who drank caffeinated cola.

New Yorkers and San Franciscans were also among people most likely to say caffeine is bad for you. More than 70 percent of people questioned in the poll said they were not addicted to caffeine. The older the age group the more likely they were to say coffee would be the most difficult caffeinated product to give

I am part of the 21%. I don't drink coffee, I get my caffeine from a Diet Coke in the morning (or an Excedrine). If I need caffeine in a restaurant, I drink tea. My parents didn't drink coffee so I never developed a taste for it.

Interesting.

I found another version of the article that had the breakdowns by type of caffeine.

Most Coffee Consumption
Regular coffee & specialty coffee drinks
1. Seattle/Tacoma
2. Boston
3. Houston
4. Chicago
5. Miami

Least Coffee Consumption
1. Dallas/Ft. Worth
2. New York
3. St. Louis
4. Atlanta
5. Philadelphia

I was really surprised that there would be that big a difference between Houston and DFW with one the 3rd most and the other the least. This made me wonder about the survey so I did some more digging. They only surveyed 20 cities.

I wonder how much real difference there is between the top and bottom cities on these lists. It may be like a lot of the NFL rankings that you see. One team will be ranked 8th and another 28th in some statistic which the commentators will make a big deal of out and then you find out out that there are only tiny statistical differences between all teams.

I'm pretty much the same. I had a cup of coffee in 1976. Didn't like it much so I never had another one.

My grandmother on my mom's side was Mormon before she married my grandfather and my dad's family was just very poor. Neither side of the family drinks coffee so that's how I grew up. We drank a lot of iced tea but I've pretty much given that up as an adult. I do drink diet Coke but I'm just as happy with the non-caffeinated sodas.

Once again I find myself in a minority position.

Can't give up on chocolate quite yet although my consumption has likely decreased some. But that is more a sweet tooth than a need for a buzz.

But haven't had coffee, tea or caffeinated soda in quite a long time.

I'm surprised Seattle isn't the first most cafinated because they are the coffee capital of the world. I guess Coke and Chocolate also have a lot of caffeine
