American Wife

#1 Post by PlacentiaSoccerMom » Mon Sep 08, 2008 11:50 pm

I just finished reading American Wife, the story of a middle-class librarian who marries the dim-witted fun-loving scion of a political family, who eventually becomes President after losing the popular vote, but winning the electoral vote.

The librarian has sex with the brother of teenager that she killed and gets an abortion, something that her Born Again Christian Husband's administration does it's best to hide.

I wonder if Laura Bush has read the book.

Someone lent my mother a copy, she was not amused.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

It was an enjoyable book, but I think it was a cowardly way to go about things. Some details of the book have been changed, for instance, the main character lives in Wisconsin. There are so many details that are similar, like her husband going to bed thinking that he lost the 2000 election, that you have to wonder, how much of what was written is true about Laura Bush.
