Why rednecks may rule the world

#1 Post by Bob Juch » Mon Sep 08, 2008 1:25 pm

By Joe Bageant
Author of Deerhunting With Jesus

During this US election cycle we are hearing a lot from the pundits and candidates about "heartland voters," and "white working class voters."
What they are talking about are rednecks. But in their political correctness, media types cannot bring themselves to utter the word "redneck." So I'll say it for them: redneck-redneck-redneck-redneck.

Yes, that author needs to be worried. He wrote a trite article with no ending or focus.

Bless his little pea-pickin' heart.
Well, then

How The Scots Invented The Modern World
By Arthur Herman, Crown Publishers, New York, 2001

The Scots are an interesting people because they were able to carry off what few other people ever have. Giving up their sovereignty, they nevertheless, nearly conquered the world with their ideas and energy. Nor is the true history of the Scots quite as modern mythmaking paints it.

Arthur Herman subtitles his book: "The true story of how Western Europe's poorest nation created our world and everything in it." If there is any truth in the movie Braveheart, then it is probably the backwardness and brutality of early life in Scotland. As late as 1700 there were still many people in Northwestern Scotland who were literally living in the hunter-gatherer stage of civilization.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

They didn't exactly vote on giving up their sovereignty.

Hey, Mr. K. Were you referring to my remark or that about Braveheart, or?

No, I was just referring to Mr. Bageant, presuming to speak for all us redneck-types.

Foxworthy already covered this schtick, but I guess he never copyrighted it in Britain, so Bageant sold it to BBC.

So, you're husband's last name is Foxworthy?
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

You seem to be (you'll pardon the term) laboring under the misapprehension that it's the person who is wronged who has most to gain from copyright infringement lawsuits.

No, it's the media types and, um, community organizers who benefit most from these types of things. And Beebs' experience as a noncandidate/candidate makes her at least as experienced as any of the others at community organizing.

Yeah. What he said. Well put and, uh, I approve that message.

I'd also like a massage. I have a horrible neckache.
