Separate Forums

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Tue Oct 23, 2007 6:48 am

After two weeks here, I've got to ask.... wouldn't it be better to get everything onto one Bored like it had been for all those years?

The transcripts not appearing on the main Bored just don't look right, and I think it takes away from the discussion and quirky tangents that often pop up in them (and kills new threads spawned from them) because they are not located in the main forum. Look at the Transcript forum, and not many of the transcript threads reach double digits in posts, and very few even make it past 15. The fact that there are few inf any BB's lurking in the Transcript forum at any one time help to quell the usual discussions that would arise. The only reasonable argument I've heard for keeping the transcripts separate is to make them easier to look up, but given that they are listed in the order of the most recent post in each thread, doing an author search on BBTranscriptTeam still seems to be the best way for one to look them up...

I know multiple forums were voted down on the BobJ Bored before we moved here, and I was curious as to why they were recreated over here, but I'm guessing it's because Dave was unaware of the that. Is that still the popular opinion? I'm assuming it would be possible to smush all posts into the main forum if we want....

I don't know anything about the transcripts, but where are the Downy Balls in your picture? Have you been sniffing all the Dawn scents again.... :P

Okay--it's nice having the transcripts in one place for reference, but I see how it squashes conversation, seeing as how I haven't read them once.

We used to post them on the bored for conversation, then they were archived elsewhere for reference. Maybe the Transcript Team can post them where they are, and any one that was noteworthy can be transferred over here for discussion? That way, they'd only have to be posted once unless they were interesting.

You're not willing to leave Shade with this one, little concession? He's being overwhelmed by our off-topic banter, you know! :)

I'm willing to leave the Transcript threads in a separate forum, but I guess it depends how most of us are using the new Bored. I tend to use that "View posts since last visit" link, which shows me all the updated threads on all the forums. Although I may only be listed as lurking in the "Bored Posts" forum, I'll still see a new post in the Transcript forum.

I guess that's a subject for a poll or two.

1. How are folks looking at this Bored?

2. Why aren't more folks responding to the Transcript threads?

The balls are condemned to the back shelf since they don't fit... :P

I'm not supposed to see that scene in my picture after next May since we're supposed to be getting rid of all laundry powders companywide by then, but I don't see that happening....

How could we tell if a transcript would be interesting or not, when much of the entertaining conversation arises spontaneously from off-topic tangents? Aside from the extra work of cross-posting the transcripts in two different places (boy, was that a pain for the week that we were split between five different Bored candidates!), that would probably kill all the conversation in the Transcript forum.

Perhaps we can just make it clear that it's okay to engage in tangential banter in the transcript threads? As long as people can find those, it's not so bad if some of the conversation there tends to wander...

I have just posted my first poll in over 3 years.

It felt nostagically good!

I don't think that necessarily solves the problem. I myself rarely venture into the Transcript forum. I wonder how many others visit rarely or even never.

It's all about where the action is....

Why would they be eliminating laundry detergents from their stores?

I'm guessing just the powders. They don't dissolve well in cold water and leave "dandruff" on the dark clothes.

I have no particular preference regarding where the transcripts are (separate forum or not), but I suspect there might be more comment if they were put in with the regular messages. A lot of the off-topic banter arose as a result of a comment to the transcript. Plus it seems that some of those who regularly commented on the transcripts aren't doing so, either because they haven't found their way here (or are lurking, like kazoo) or aren't as active as they used to be.

Part of the Wal's big sustainability platform. They are pushing concentrated liquid detergents over powders and nonconcentrated liquids to create less waste. Customers have only started to come around to buying the 2X and 3X concentrated detergents... but I live in an area where a lot of people swear by the powders and really cheap watered-down detergent, and aren't going to give them up quietly....

So you lurk in the Bored Posts index page instead of using the New Posts link?

Mine is set to the forum index, and that's where I "lurk". That way when I refresh the screen I can see if there are any new posts in any of the forums. It also seems to help when I click the icon next to a message thread that is supposed to take me to the most recent posts.

Why? I can get anywhere I want to go on the Bored from there.

I'm not interested in changing my Bored viewing habits. I'm just curious as to why we've accepted an alternative (subforums) when we didn't have to, and is it really better in comparison to what we're giving up (all-in-one gathering place where everything is more interconnected) to have it?

I was thinking that you could start them here and after a week move them to the other forum for easy searching later.

How about if we put the transcript threads on the main page, where they can attract banter, off-topic observations, nihil obstats, pomes, and MBFBrainisms, but also maintain a "transcripts only" area (without all the comments) to serve as an archive for folks who only want the questions and answers? That would provide a public service as well as an easy way for BBs and friends-of-BBs to study for audition tests.

I confess that a couple of times I have written posts on the separate threads but have deleted them before hitting "submit" on the basis of whimsey, inanity, or general annoyingness.

Obviously, I don't mind being annoying in the midst of longer threads.

If it's easy for an administrator or moderator to do that, that just might be a winning compromise, takinover.

Otherwise, it looks like WGAS might just pull an upset in this poll! :P

I just recently figured out I could go to view next topic, which is about as close as I can get to how I read the old GO bored.

I have the same bookmark as LB, which I like. I haven't wandered over to the transcript thread at all. It just isn't in my routine yet, and will definitely take me a while to learn to do it. It has really cut down on the comments we've had on the show, that's for sure.

Can we vote more than once? I'm just askin'....WGAS may win otherwise......... :o

Possibly because many people, such as myself, viewed the old Bored in flat view and clicked through every message, stopping to make comments along the way. In this format, perhaps, people feel constrained to be more "on-topic" since the format is more rigid.

AFAIK, we can't with the current poll, but beast might accept takinover's suggestion as an amendment to his original motion.

I'd change my vote to "Put the transcripts in the main 'Bored Posts' forum, then move these threads the 'Show Transcripts' forum after one week."
