The more likely result is that many of them shut down their domestic operations (or go broke trying to keep them open) and move somewhere where they can find enough labor at prices that work.

But you're showing an awful lot of solicitude for people whose actions say don't seem to think they're being exploited, at least compared to where they came from. According to published reports, Donald Trump will deliver part of the closing arguments himself in the New York Civil Fraud trial scheduled for Thursday. New York AG Letitia James has asked for a $370 million fine in the case and that Trump be barred for life from engaging in the New York real estate industry.

This should be fun. I wonder how much latitude the judge is going to give him or how long he's going to talk.

The issue is that since Fani has had pressure on her to advance this case from the White House (her chosen prosecutor met with the White House at least twice according to his expense reports), she is now under scrutiny that she never was before. The real story is this. Trump just posted a link to that article on Truth Social. That's all he did. Now asswipes like the 'Pastor' are bringing in the race card like they always do. The arguments are being made by the Ingrassia and the Gateway Pundit, not Trump. So sick of the TDS.

The arguments in the article are written in lawyer-ese. The self-proclaimed lawyers on this bored can argue its merits. That is what, and is only what, was presented. The point is that NOWHERE in the article or in Trump's re-posting of it is there ANYTHING having to do with race. That comes only and specifically from the leftist racists. As it always does. Non-shocking news here. The judge apparently laid out certain conditions under which Trump could deliver his closing argument. From the judge's statement:

Thus, in my sole discretion, I will consent to let Mr. Trump make a closing argument if, and only if, through counsel by 1/9/2024, and by himself, personally, on the record, just before he speaks, he agrees to limit his subjects to what is permissible in a counsel’s closing argument, that is, commentary on the relevant, material facts that are in evidence, and application of the relevant law to those facts. He may not seek to introduce new evidence. He may not ‘testify.’ He may not comment on irrelevant matters. In particular, and without limitation, he may not deliver a campaign speech, and he may not impugn myself, my staff, plaintiff, plaintiff’s staff, or the New York State Court System, none of which is relevant to this case, and all of which, except commenting on my staff, can be done, and is being done, in other forums.

Trump wouldn't agree, so he's not going to be allowed to talk. From a legal standpoint, that's probably good news for him, but not from an entertainment one.

To the surprise of pretty much no one, the Supreme Court has granted certiorari in the Colorado case. Briefing will be complete by February 5, 2024, and oral argument is set for February 8. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Court issued a decision within a week of oral argument. It would surprise me if the Court took as long as a month. --Bob

• The insurrection clause only applies to office holders, not candidates. Even if Trump is ineligible at present, he should be allowed to run, since Congress could remove the disqualification before inauguration day.

The Georgia Supreme Court on Wednesday affirmed the dismissal of two cases brought against Brad Raffensparger and election officials in two Georgia counties, challenging the use of electronic voting machines and asking for an injunction against their use in those counties. The Supreme Court based its decision on procedural grounds, that the suit should have been brought against the State of Georgia and/or the local governments and not the named individuals. Technical grounds but still another loss for those alleging election fraud.

Give Trump's lawyers in the Carroll trial credit for finally coming up with an effective strategy. They played the COVID card. Over the weekend, one juror got sick and the judge sent them home today. Whereupon Trump's attorney Alina Habba "remembered" she had dinner with her parents three days earlier, and they've now tested positive for COVID and that she claims she wasn't feeling too well. (Trump was sitting next to her when this happened. None of them at the table were wearing masks.)

The judge adjourned the trial for the day, but if Habba wants any more delays, she'll have to produce her own COVID test result. Kind of reminds you of having to get a signed doctor's excuse when you were in elementary school.

The judge in Nathan Wade's divorce proceedings has ordered the files in that case be unsealed, as requested by Trump co-defendant Mike Roman and various media organizations. I expect we'll start seeing reports about what's in the files that pertains to any relationship between Wade and Fani Willis soon.

The judge has temporarily stayed the subpoena for Willis to give a deposition in the divorce case. Instead, Nathan Wade will sit for a deposition next week and the judge will evaluate Wade's testimony to determine if there is any probative value in taking Willis's deposition.

Ashleigh Merchant, the attorney for Trump co-defendant Mike Roman in the Georgia case, plans to subpoena Fani Willis, her alleged boyfriend Nathan Wade, and other attorneys in both Wade's and the DA's office for an evidentiary hearing on February 16. She's asking that charges against Roman be dismissed because of a conflict of interest arising from the alleged affair, although it's not clear how an affair between two prosecuting attorneys would affect Roman or any other defendant in the case. But it will make for an interesting hearing, which, in Georgia (unlike New York or federal cases), will be televised.
