RIP Don Larsen

#1 Post by bazodee » Wed Jan 01, 2020 10:09 pm

Don Larsen, the former Yankees great who threw the only perfect game in World Series history, died Wednesday at the age of 90, according to representative Andrew Levy.

Levy told the Associated Press the former pitcher died of esophageal cancer in Hayden, Idaho.

The two-time World Series champion’s most famous moment came with the Yankees in 1956, when he pitched a perfect game in Game 5 of the World Series against the Dodgers.

After lasting 1 ¹/₃ innings in the Yankees’ Game 2 loss, the then-26-year-old righty came back to strike out seven Dodgers, which resulted in the now-iconic shot of catcher Yogi Berra jumping into Larsen’s arms at the end of the 2-0 win.

The Yankees won the series in seven games, and Larsen was named MVP.

Forty-three years later, Larsen threw out the first pitch to Berra before David Cone’s perfect game in 1999.

Larsen, the Indiana native, pitched 14 seasons in the majors total, including five with the Yankees.
