Woman Taking Selfie Mauled by Zoo Jaguar

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Sun Mar 10, 2019 9:30 pm

An Arizona woman who climbed over a protective barrier to get close to a jaguar at a zoo was badly mauled when the jaguar reached through the cage and got hold of the woman's arm. Beyond wondering at the stupidity of some people, this one actually brought back memories for me of the time I had my picture taken (before the selfie era) with a full grown tiger.

It happened at a flea market in Florida when they had an exhibition of wild cats from a rescue center nearby. Tigers are fairly easy to work with and they distracted the tiger with one of those whirling toys while I and the other people who got photographs came behind the tiger one at a time and stopped just behind its front shoulder blade about a foot away from the tiger. Mrs. SSS was off shopping at the time or she never would have let me do that. We were visiting my mother down in Florida and gave her the picture but I never got it back after she died.

This woman apparently didn't follow the same procedure.

If the zoo animal doesn't cooperate, just grab it by the back legs and drag it into its cage. Simple.

Rumor has it that there is a high rate of turnover on this job.

I am always rooting for the critters.

I never thought Steve Irwin was noble, poking a critter to see what would happen. You're going to piss them off, is what's going to happen.

On that gators show with the subtitles (what's that about?) where the swamp people are trying to kill them, I root for the gators but they never win. Sometimes they get away, though.

When I was a student at Tech around 1970 or so, WTBS (before Turner bought it) used to show Bullfighting from Mexico on weekends. As I recall, they showed pretty much the whole thing including the bulls bleeding all over the ring with color commentary on how stylish the matador was.

Somehow, I doubt that would be shown today.

I remember that. I never understood the attraction to Spanish bullfighting.

Me and Mrs Spock went to a bullfight in Mazatlan in 1994. It will surprise no one that I liked it, but Mrs S didn't.

Is it even a thing anymore?

I have lots of pets and I love them. However, as opposed to most people, when it is time for a pet to go Bye-Bye, I can put it to sleep myself. It is easier that way (For me).

With the bullfight, more than anything, I was enjoying Mexican culture.

Someone who sneaks up to within a foot of a stranger's tiger for a picture has no business wondering about the stupidity of other people. At least the lady in AZ had bars between her and the animal.

That reminds me of a so-so movie with a wonderful co-star from Philly.

I had the knowledge that I had a heck of a good lawsuit on my hands if something did happen. There are a couple of other factors as well. Tigers are relatively easy to work with as long as they are well fed. The reason you don't see more tiger acts in circuses is because of how rare they are. And tigers also give off warning signs if they are upset (which would have ended the show in a hurry).

They actually had three or four different big cats on display and there were no bars between the spectators and the cats. They wouldn't let people pose with the leopard because leopards are too temperamental (that's why you don't see leopard acts in circuses) and can turn without warning. I think the jaguar is more closely akin to the leopard than the tiger.

Roller coasters can be dangerous too.

The way that bulls die in the ring is not like putting a pet to sleep. The bulls are tortured, bled, and weakened before the matador faces them. If someone in the United States treated a dog or cat that way, they would be arrested for animal cruelty.

I remember as a kid seeing pictures in the newspaper of Ava Gardner with a bullfighter she was dating. I didn't understand how you could date a bullfighter. I am not sure if I understood all of the implications of it, but I know I thought making the bull run after the cape was cruel.
