The Boney Awards for 2014-Top 80 Songs
Welcome to the 2014 Boney Awards' countdown of my 80 favorite
songs of 2014.
Only 80 tunes this year, as I really couldn't come up with 100
I felt strongly enough about to qualify for a Boney.
Oh, I could've if I streched long enough, but I wound up with 87
that I REALLY liked, and honestly it was easy enough to weed out
7 in order to even it at 80 winners. So here we are!
My apologies for the ads on some of these links. You can skip most of them after 5 seconds.
#80. THIS FUNKY MUSIC-WAR
Those guys who gave us Low Rider, The Cisco Kid, and other
jazz/funk hits in the 70's returned last year with an album
called Evolutionary. This little butt-shaker is my favorite
track.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzm1CcCS0fU
#79. EVERYBODY KNOWS IT WAS ME-ADRIAN BOURGEOIS
This young man's dad is Brent Bourgeois, who had a hit several
years ago with Dare To Fall In Love, and, as a member of the
duo Bourgeois Tagg, with I Don't Mind At All, which was produced
by Todd Rundgren..which is interesting, since this sprightly
piano-based pop tune sounds like it could've sprung directly from
Todd's Something/Anything album..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw-ScIXEjW8
#78. WE ARE THE KIDS-WALK THE MOON
Liked a few tunes from their last cd, and there are a couple of
decent ones on their 2014 effort..this one made the cut. Heavily
similar to Foster The People, Neon Trees, and the like. Lotsa 80's
DNA in this one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnQS0FGaBbg
#77. PARALLELS-EELS
Mark Oliver Everett, essentially the Eels, comes up with another
quirky but touching quiet acoustic number. Definitely an acquired
taste, but I love this guy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_myUVbK49JM
#76. JUST A LITTLE TOO HARD-THE EMPTY HEARTS
Meat and potatoes rock n roll from a band comprised of
some veterans of other bands: Wally Palmar of the Romantics, Elliot
Easton of the Cars, Andy Babiuk of the Chesterfield Kings, and Clem
Burke of Blondie. Nothin' fancy here, folks, just some good rockin'.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0YYMHyJF6Y
#75. AFTER THE DISCO-BROKEN BELLS
Kind of an eerie melody married to a dance beat. Pretty infectious,
and more 80's inspired than Saturday Night Feverish. Obviously, or
you wouldn't see it on this list lol.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeiqMuky3oo
#74. WOW-PRINCE AND 3RD EYE GIRL
Interesting. I've found some pretty obscure stuff on Youtube for
links on this countdown, but this one by a major artist I can't seem
to track down anything for. So, with apolgies, I can only offer a
30-second soundbite. Anyway, His Royal Weirdness issued 2 separate
cd's simultaneously last year, one as a solo and one with an all-female
band called 3rd Eye Girl. I found nothing I liked on Prince's solo,
but several on the group effort I quite fancied..although none of them
were ones sung by a 3rd Eye Girl member...go figure. This slow-grinding
rocker topped 'em all for me.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N1L ... mu_dp_trk1
#73. I'VE BEEN LOVING YOU-MICHAEL CARPENTER
This Australian power-popper has long been one of my favorites.
Three part-harmonies ooh-la-la ing, crunchy guitars, a Ringo backbeat,
and a sugary-sweet melody on top. What the hell's not to like?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEn5srF0vC0
#72. I WANNA GET BETTER-BLEACHERS
Side project of fun.'s Jack Antonoff, it is indeed, a "fun"
sounding anthem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5osPtE7kXI
#71. MIRACLES-COLDPLAY
The type of uplifting tune this band often comes up with..which
is the reason people usually love 'em or loathe 'em. Since they
usually place 2 or 3 songs a year on the Boneys list, it's pretty obvious
where I stand on them. This comes from the movie Unbroken.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECHJd2Q63P8
#70. BELIEVE AGAIN-YES
If you aren't paying attention, you might not realize that Jon Anderson is
not the singer. This guy, Jon DAVISON..sheesh, his NAME is even similar...
sounds uncannily like the founding frontman. Yes afficianados might not
agree, but I don't think Anderson's abscence is as unfortunate as you'd expect.
This is a very pretty melody over a nice easy-progressive arrangement.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56lNnGAB5bM
#69. RITE OF SPRING-THE LEGAL MATTERS
Sounds like it came outta your late 60's car radio on a summer day.
Brian Wilson's Beach Boys music has obviously spent a lot of time on
these guys' turntables, and I'm also hearing some Pete Townshend
influences from his quieter Who compositions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kbnX2i96Fs
#68. CALIFORNIA STARS-BOB SEGER
I'll have to settle for a live version of this as I can't track
down a studio video. Classic midtempo Seger. Welcome back, Bob!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRufXvHlcQk
#67. PARADE ON-DOUG GILLARD
Your basic 2 guitars, bass and drums no frills rocker. And we all need
a dash of this in our basic musical diet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QUXiTrQIEw
#66. DON'T WAIT-ERIC CLAPTON WITH JOHN MAYER
From Clapton's JJ Cale tribute album. Just a cool, tasty song, with
some nice, slinky guitar work..naturally.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0ZQD31UQnU
#65. YOU'VE GOT A LOT ON YOUR MIND-SLOAN
To Canada we go for this pop goodness. Melody is the key element
here, with chugging guitars to back it up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy62TmrSPGk
#64. ADDING THE BLUE-Chrissie Hynde
Leader of The Pretenders has stopped pretending that there is a
band outside of her anymore and just billed herself as a solo.
If you love Chrissie, you'll love this ballad, which is done in that
tough but tender way that is uniquely hers..'nuff said.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MewILDudQo
#63. MADE FOR ENDING-JUKEBOX THE GHOST
Sprightly modern pop from this Washington D.C. outfit. Sort of similar
to a band like fun. Pop but in the best sense of the word.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJNXAEH ... Bh&index=4
#62. THE LONG WAY AROUND-JACKSON BROWNE
I can't say that I'm a huge fan of his, but with someone who's
been around as long as he has, there are certainly a fair amount of
tunes I've liked. Considering it's been some 42 years since his
first album, his 2014 release was not too bad at all. This gentle
breeze sounds as good as anything he's done in awhile.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2GMr1GtzNo
#61. GIMME SOMETHING GOOD-RYAN ADAMS
This musical chameleon (he's traversed rock, blues, country,
alternative..you name it) rocks out on this Tom Petty-esque
midtempo rocker. And hey, Elvira's in the video!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=802vbfZe9io

Re: The Boney Awards for 2014-Top 80 Songs
..and on we go
#60. THUNDER-PASSENGER
This band made an impact in 2014 with a quiet song called "Let
Her Go", which was actually from an album released a year earlier.
This uptempo, rhythmic number is from their actual 2014 cd, "Whispers".
Short but sweet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAhP6VZG5e4
#59. I AM A RIVER-FOO FIGHTERS
Each of the songs on the album this was taken from were recorded in
a different studio in a different city. The recording process was filmed
in segments for a miniseries on HBO.
This majestic epic was recorded At The Magic Shop in NYC in case you
were wondering.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cqHAgnub_M
#58. DISLOCATION-COUNTING CROWS
There were a few candidates up for the list from their excellent 2014
album. This straightforward rocker is one of them that made the cut.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJXOTERrwpQ
#57. LONELY WORLD-ROB BONFIGLIO
Was/is a member of the Philly power pop band Wanderlust. This is
much more on the "pop" side of the scale, but its melody is quite
infectious..would not have sounded out of place on an early 70's
car radio..
http://robbonfiglio.bandcamp.com/track/lonely-world
#56. CRYSTALLIZED-YOUNG THE GIANT
Easygoing indie pop tune by this California band. Nothing groundbreaking,
but well crafted and not lacking for musical hooks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF5uMvCGUCM
#55. RED RIVER-TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS
Classic Petty from an album that saw him returning to form after some
recent stylistic detours. Petty fans should eat this one up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qv3oaDX9ikY
#54. BACK TO THE SHACK-WEEZER
Another band returning to the sound that made them popular
initially. Slacker rock at its best. Makes me wish I could grow my hair
out just for a few minutes so that I could bang my head in time to it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H89GXU9OeU
#53. FEEL IT COMING BACK-SANTANA w/DIEGO TORRES
English language version of this song from Santana's mostly Spanish
release, Corazon. Pretty melody, a put-you-in-a-good-mood car radio on
a summer day feel, and of course, terrific guitar work by Mr. Santana.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Wcpy4VKoTY
#52. NO GOOD IN GOODBYE-THE SCRIPT
Melodic power ballad by the Irish band who's come up with a few in
their day. I've never been thrilled with any of their albums as a whole
I s'pose, but they always seem to come up with a couple of single song
entries on my countdowns.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho9xM9n2USA
#51. NO EVIL-MAGIC!
First of two from this Canadian pop-reggae flavored band on the countdown...
the other comes much later. A little reminiscent of the early Police.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA9sshXZkMU
#50. DON'T WALK AWAY-LOS LONELY BOYS
They had success out of the gate a few years back with a song called "Heaven",
but have had trouble following up on that success since. Too bad.
This Santana inspired bit of classy pop should've been heard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB5WwEuTB_A
#49. DETROIT MADE-BOB SEGER
YEAH! Bob can still pull off a great rock and roll tune when
he puts his mind to it. This easily could've been a track
on "Stranger In Town" or "Against The Wind". This cooks!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYygx1F0Bmw
#48. AFTER YOU-THE JELLYBRICKS
One of the better power pop bands out there, this is a prime
example of why I like the genre. Very 60's sounding.
http://thejellybricks.bandcamp.com/track/after-you
#47. EAST OF EDEN-THE DEATHRAY SAINTS
Midtempo pop-rock with a strong similarity to The Wallflowers.
Unfortunately I could only find a 30-second sample.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MTVWB96/ref=dm_ws_tlw_trk1
#46. EVERY WORD YOU SAY-AERIAL
Another sweet power pop tune. And sadly, another 30-second
soundbite. Sigh.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MQVGG2W/ref=dm_ws_tlw_trk4
#45. GONE TO HEAVEN-RYAN STAR
Starts quietly, building to one of those Coldplay-ish singalong
anthems.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLaPPsB978Y
#44. THE HEART-NEEDTOBREATHE
Acoustic footstomper in the vein of Philip Phillips, Lumineers, et al.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5Yo99VjE2o
#43. POSTCARD-JUKEBOX THE GHOST
A second score for this pop band. You can hear some of The Killers'
sound on this one, as well as the previously mentioned fun.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Lw5HHZFo4E
#42. MIXED UP-GRAHAM COLTON
Modern pop song that has its fair share of memorable hooks that stick
with you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TJ-F08ejHg
#41. SUPERHEROES-THE SCRIPT
As I said, these guys usually manage to snag a couple of Boneys with each
album they release. Here's the second one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHXXktQcd-g
We're halfway through, kids. Hang in there...#40-#21 is up next.

Re: The Boney Awards for 2014-Top 80 Songs
Into the Top 40 we sail....
40. DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES-ROBIN GIBB
No, not the old Andy Williams standard, but a very pretty
song that's part of the considerably strong album Gibb was working
on before his 2012 death. Old school Bee Gees more than
Saturday Night Fever, but the fact that it's on my list
probably clued you in to that already.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMeVs-a0b2k
39. AIN'T GOT NOBODY-WEEZER
Down-n-dirty little rocker that to me ranks up there with
Hashpipe, Buddy Holly, and their other best tunes. Sometimes
they go a bit overboard with their musical experimentation,
but this gets back to the basics, as does much of the album it
comes from.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd-aMEvsRus
38. BULLETPROOF PICASSO-TRAIN
Wasn't overly impressed with their latest album, but this one,
the title track, was an exception. A good, jaunty pop anthem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNHJ7zz16bY
37. LAST SONG-JEREMY FISHER
The Canadian singer-songwriter veered into roots music on his
prior release, but is back on pop ground with his latest. This
is my favorite track, a tasty, chugging midtempo outing with an
undeniably catchy chorus. This guy should really be better known
already.
http://jeremyfisher.bandcamp.com/track/last-song
36. FLOWERS IN A VASE-NEAL MORSE
Former member of the Progressive Rock band Spock's Beard, Morse
has alternated between Christian and secular music since shaving
the Beard, so to speak. This gently rolling acoustic love song is
quite lovely. I've given you 2 links here...the first is a 40 second
snippet of the song, while the second is the whole album, which
contains the only full version of the song I could find. The song
itself starts about 9 minutes in. Actually, there ARE another couple of
decent songs on the cd if you feel like listening..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trh-IqSveak
35. THE LINE-PHISH
OK, first of all, I am not a huge fan of this band, but I have liked
a few of their more accessible tunes. This one qualifies. A nice,
uncomplicated song structure without the excessive jamming or Grateful
Dead style noodling around for 20 minutes, yet retaining musical
intelligence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyQC6aRGKCA
34. STAY WITH ME-SAM SMITH
The Grammy winning record and song of the year. Not ranking quite so high on the Boneys...frankly, I got sick of hearing it all over the place and his soulful pleading started sounding like whining, but it does make the list because at the heart of it, it is still a moving Gospel-flavored powerhouse. I don't seem to be as in love with the whole album as many people are, but this is a good song and can't be denied a Boney.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB-5XG-DbAA
33. GETTING MY HOPES UP-DECLAN SNOWDEN
Irish singer-songwriter. This is a piano-pounding dramatic ballad
that packs a real nice punch. A little bit of Ben Folds influence
in here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnY95eulmWI
32. HOLD ON-Colbie Caillat
In her continuing quest to earn my forgiveness for inflicting
"Bubbly" on my poor ears, Colbie scores a few more points with
this pop confection. (Almost) all is forgiven, Colbie...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhA3d1i0kNY
31. AMERICAN ZERO-NEON TREES
Lotsa 80's tricks in this high energy track, which has a driving beat that doesn't
let up on the gas until it's over.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAYhCOf0Ybc
30. I'M NOT GONNA MISS YOU-GLEN CAMPBELL
This one'll break your heart, plain and simple. It's about his entry into
the final stages of his battle with Alzheimer's, and the fact that, at the
end of the line, the good news for him is that he won't remember anything,
so he won't miss who he loves most, making it easier on him. The video is
extremely touching.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrIW5RpvBnM
29. IN MY OWN LITTLE WORLD-BLEU
An ode to selfishness..the lyrics paint a picture of quite the misanthrope,
but danged if it ain't catchy as hell...look out, you may find yourself
singing along.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3nOARzfn3c
28. I'M LOSING YOU-PAUL CARRACK
The voice on hits by Ace, Squeeze, Mike + the Mechanics, and as a
solo act, Carrack covers a song done back in the early 60's by Brenda
Lee, which, honestly, I wasn't familiar with. Beautiful song, and he
just plain flat-out has one of the most pleasant sounding singing
voices in the business. A gem. By the way, I looked up Brenda Lee's
version, and by golly, I liked that one, too..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssoUTrc7mrg
27. THE WRITING'S ON THE WALL-OK GO
Modern pop entry with some strong 80's influence and its fair share
of quirky hooks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m86ae_e_ptU
26. I GAVE UP EVERYTHING FOR YOU, 'CEPT THE BLUES-JOE BONAMASSA
Dude's originally from my area, and he's blowin' up in popularity,
thanks to his numerous PBS specials. Carrying the torch for old school
blues-rock, Joe can play that guitar pretty darn good, so fans of Clapton,
Stevie Ray Vaughan, take heart...that style of music ain't goin' down
without a fight from Mr. Bonamassa.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0RJbvJyOks
25. SLEEPING WITH A FRIEND-NEON TREES
These folks are back 6 slots later with their second of 2 Boneys.
This slinky number got a lot of mileage on VH-1's top 20 countdown.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB7R0ZY9w94
24. TWO HANDS UP-O.A.R.
This reggae-tinged band is usually good for a couple of Boneys per
release, and this time is no exception. This feel-good song is the
first of two high-placing entries for 2014.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jaJNxGGHUI
23. THAT'S HOW STRONG MY LOVE IS-PAUL RODGERS
In my opinion, one of the finest rock singers ever, the former
Free/Bad Company frontman cuts loose on some soul classics on his
latest cd. Here's his terrific take on the old Otis Redding chestnut.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UI1ydZvBdV8
22. CAUGHT UP IN A FEELING-LINUS OF HOLLYWOOD
A sweet, sweet pop ditty that would've been a huge hit some 40 years
ago. A cute, cuddly puppy-dog of a song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxAamUFD774
21. COME WITH ME NOW-KONGOS
Another one I discovered through the VH-1 countdown show. A Rompin',
stompin' noisemaker complete with rock and roll accordion! Had this
come out a few decades earlier, Myron Floren could've rocked this one
with Lawrence and the boys....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz2GVlQkn4Q
40. DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES-ROBIN GIBB
No, not the old Andy Williams standard, but a very pretty
song that's part of the considerably strong album Gibb was working
on before his 2012 death. Old school Bee Gees more than
Saturday Night Fever, but the fact that it's on my list
probably clued you in to that already.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMeVs-a0b2k
39. AIN'T GOT NOBODY-WEEZER
Down-n-dirty little rocker that to me ranks up there with
Hashpipe, Buddy Holly, and their other best tunes. Sometimes
they go a bit overboard with their musical experimentation,
but this gets back to the basics, as does much of the album it
comes from.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd-aMEvsRus
38. BULLETPROOF PICASSO-TRAIN
Wasn't overly impressed with their latest album, but this one,
the title track, was an exception. A good, jaunty pop anthem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNHJ7zz16bY
37. LAST SONG-JEREMY FISHER
The Canadian singer-songwriter veered into roots music on his
prior release, but is back on pop ground with his latest. This
is my favorite track, a tasty, chugging midtempo outing with an
undeniably catchy chorus. This guy should really be better known
already.
http://jeremyfisher.bandcamp.com/track/last-song
36. FLOWERS IN A VASE-NEAL MORSE
Former member of the Progressive Rock band Spock's Beard, Morse
has alternated between Christian and secular music since shaving
the Beard, so to speak. This gently rolling acoustic love song is
quite lovely. I've given you 2 links here...the first is a 40 second
snippet of the song, while the second is the whole album, which
contains the only full version of the song I could find. The song
itself starts about 9 minutes in. Actually, there ARE another couple of
decent songs on the cd if you feel like listening..

Re: The Boney Awards for 2014-Top 80 Songs
OK, folks, here we are--the creme de la creme...or,
depending on your assessment of my musical taste,
maybe more like the crap de la crap:
My 20 favorite songs of 2014:
20. ELVIS WENT TO HOLLYWOOD-COUNTING CROWS
The only act with 3 songs on the countdown, the second
of the three to come up is a nifty little rocker that also
carries a strong melody line and a bit of the flavor of their
early work, albeit with a MUCH punchier arrangement.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MRg5KRxCUQ
19. WITH A GIRL LIKE YOU-MYRACLE BRAH
This obscure band is one of the best in the genre of power pop.
Here they update a Top 40 Troggs tune from the 60's, managing to
retain the elements and charm of the original while giving it a
little post-millenium kick in the pants at the same time. I'm
picky about remakes but this one's a keeper.
http://myraclebrah.bandcamp.com/track/w ... l-like-you
18. MASTERPIECE-ANDY GRAMMER
The lyrics may come off as slightly pretentious but it's swiftly
forgotten as I'm swept away by the beauty of the chorus' melody.
What can I say, I'm a sucker for that big melodic hook.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NikUzRReVYs
17. THE GAME-YES
Majestic opus from the long running progressive rock band. Strongest
work I've heard from them in a couple of decades.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw7nJSW7XTU
16. CHANDELIER-SIA
One of the few crossovers between the Boneys and Grammys. It's
just a powerful, powerful vocal performance. Oversaturation knocked it
down a few notches, probably.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vjPBrBU-TM
15. EVERY NIGHT-JAMIE CULLUM
The English jazz/pop crooner covers one of my favorite McCartney solo
songs. Although I'll still take the original, Cullum adds enough tasty
spices to make this a great listen. This comes from a double disc of
McCartney tributes by some real heavyweights, and while there are some
nice offerings, this is the only one to make my list.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p76wlbJABkM
14. TOURNIQUET-JEREMY MESSERSMITH
This rolls along nicely, picking up traction as it goes on.
It is crafted well, a quiet, pretty verse leading to a buildup in power
and an even prettier chorus.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTiyoc_MiDA
13. SHUT UP AND DANCE-BETTER THAN EZRA
The band basically known only for the 90's hit "Good" returns with a
more dance pop sound here, although the crunchy guitars keep it from
wimping out..very catchy, indeed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf8BoNArd1I
12. EARTHQUAKE DRIVER-COUNTING CROWS
My favorite track off the equally-appreciated album Somewhere Under
Wonderland is a sprightly popper reminiscent of Joni Mitchell in her
most upbeat 70's moments.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMuVUZuY9v8
11. ROCK OR BUST-AC/DC
The Aussie bad boys come roaring back with this smoking hot rocker
that holds up against their very best. Angus Young is a riffmeister
par excellence. The vocalists past and present have always kept me from
enjoying the band in more than small doses, but Young's guitar work is
what keeps the band on my radar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NdHySPJr8I
10. TAKE ME TO CHURCH-HOZIER
Drenched in soul and powered by some intense lyrics, this dude came
out of nowhere and grabbed a lot of attention with this song. Not a
song to be forgotten easily.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYSVMgRr6pw
9. BRAND NEW YEAR-ERIC CARMEN
I suppose that technically, this qualifies as a holiday song, but I prefer
to hear its sentiments as being a year-long kind of thing. I also will
use any excuse to give Eric Carmen props. This shows his gift for melody
hasn't left him...was included on a hits compilation disc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQLw7F01lgI
8. THE MAN-ALOE BLACC
I am not sure about this one's eligibility. I could swear that they
played this one on ESPN during promos for the 2013 NFL Draft, yet I don't
find evidence of this being released until 2014..perhaps it was available in
another country? Anyway, what the heck, it's on my list. Uplifting and
anthemic, this soulful creation hits all the right marks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm660vIn8Tg
7. SOMEONE NEW-HOZIER
Although Take Me To Church is the song getting the most attention,
and rightfully so, since it's the most artistically astonishing tune on
the album, this is actually the song I most enjoy listening to. Although
the production values are akin to those of Fitz and the Tantrums, the song
itself sounds straight out of Van Morrison's Band and Street Choir/
St. Dominic's Preview period.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGQ1lVZEQRM
6. WE'LL PICK UP WHERE WE LEFT OFF-O.A.R.
Big powerhouse ballad..I can see those cigarette lighters now...uhh,
these days probably more like camera phone lights...waving in the air
in all those concert halls.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbwEXyKOYtY
5. GIRLS CHASE BOYS-INGRID MICHAELSON
This one grabs your ears and doesn't let go. Love the wordplay on
the chorus. Pure aural candy. Hard not to sing along. That rare item that
makes me want to hit the repeat button on the cd player. Could do without
the video, though..although I know what they're going after, it's still a
bit..unsettling.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GBT37_yyzY
4. SKY FULL OF STARS-COLDPLAY
I can't say that I was exactly bowled over by their 2014 release Ghost
Stories, but at least this song hit the target for me, assuring Coldplay
continues to land at least one song in my Top 10 Boneys per cd. And with
the endless commercials for the album when it came out, centering around
this song, and its weekly appearance on the VH-1 Countdown for what seemed
like the entire year, the fact that I never got sick of it would seem to
justify its place in MY countdown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPRjCeoBqrI
3. UPTOWN FUNK-MARK RONSON WITH BRUNO MARS
Coming off like the equivalent of throwing Prince, Morris Day and the Time,
and James Brown into a musical blender and hitting the settings for EXTRA
funky, if this one doesn't cause uncontrollble booty shaking, I'd have
someone check your pulse. This thing darn near explodes outta your speakers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPf0YbXqDm0
2. RUDE-MAGIC!
For months this was all set to be my number 1 for the year, until a
couple of months ago when I heard the tune that would unseat it. Never
ever got sick of it despite its incessant airplay. Easy breezy pseudo
reggae and that chorus just would not leave my brain..yet I didn't mind.
Another act from Canada..our friends to the North did rather well on this
year's Boneys.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIh2xe4jnpk
1. BANG YOUR DRUM-DEAD MAN FALL
Chances are pretty good that, were I not a huge fan of The Late Late
Show with Craig Ferguson, I would never have heard of this song that wound
up topping my list for 2014. Ferguson opened his last show with a video
incorporating a bevy of celebrities and characters from the show set to
this song, switching several minutes in to Ferguson, standing atop his desk,
singing it live with musicians, a choir, and more characters. It was a very
emotional, exuberant moment and made quite an impact. The message is basic-
be yourself, follow your own path, and eventually you'll reach your destination.
I've include two links, one for the Scotish band's video, the other to the
Ferguson show clip. I just love everything about this song...sorry, MAGIC!...
I don't want to be so "rude", but I had to bump you down to runnerup status.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzCZEIqezJg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHRC184WqD0
That's it, gang...as always, hope you found something to like here,
and hope to be able to do this again next year at roughly this same
time. Thanks for your indulgence.

and hope to be able to do this again next year at roughly this same
time. Thanks for your indulgence.

Re: The Boney Awards for 2014-Top 80 Songs
I recognize seven Mecca songs on the list (Though there may be more since our new CD we were supposed to get after Christmas musta got lost in the mail... or sent on one of our trucks to get crushed by a box of bleach)....
I'm sorry Kanye couldn't show up to interrupt the ceremony... he was probably busy crying in his gold plated bong...
Not something you'd think would be up my alley, but I do like this song. Put on last Fall's CD, but I first heard it at Busch Stadium when Matt Holliday decided to use it as his walkup music after the All Star Break...#44. THE HEART-NEEDTOBREATHE
Acoustic footstomper in the vein of Philip Phillips, Lumineers, et al.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5Yo99VjE2o
I desecrated and defecated on this song enough when I did my blog post on my five least favorite songs of 2015. (Which you managed to hit twice, amazingly!). I don't know what people hear in Sam Smith, but both of his big hits are wretched. This one (helped by the overexposure and subsequent Grammy hype) quickly became one of my least favorite songs of all time...34.
I bragged on this one during the LSWUe, so you know I love it!21.
I learned of this song through Fanny in chat back in April when she said Tulowitzki was using it for his walkup song in Colorado. Ironically, it was playing on the recently added (at the time) Mecca CD already, and I didn't recognize it. Not a fan of it...8.
I was rooting for this one to rank high, and YAY!!!! One of my favorite songs of the year (though OneRepublic's "Love Runs Out" still easily tops it)...5. GIRLS CHASE BOYS-INGRID MICHAELSON
This one grabs your ears and doesn't let go. Love the wordplay on
the chorus. Pure aural candy. Hard not to sing along. That rare item that
makes me want to hit the repeat button on the cd player. Could do without
the video, though..although I know what they're going after, it's still a
bit..unsettling.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GBT37_yyzY
If you clicked on my blog link, you will see this is the other song you were polar opposite of me on. I just don't get Coldplay...4.
Oddly enough, this is the song that precedes "Girls Chase Boys" on last year's Summer CD (The same one we're currently listening to now, and which also contains "Stay With Me", "Come With Me Now", and "Sky Full of Vomit"). Between Mecca and my radio station, this may take the coveted honor of being the song I've heard the most in the past year... so it's gotten a tad old. Pretty good song, if a bit pretentious...2.

I'm sorry Kanye couldn't show up to interrupt the ceremony... he was probably busy crying in his gold plated bong...

Looking forward to listening to the clips and buying many of these and some more albums! Thanks so much for the hard work you put in on this, though I know it is work you love.

We DID agree on 2 others on your least favorite list, as they were part of my terrible trio for 2014.."All About That Bass" and "Fancy". However, the third yuck on my list was one you said you liked as I recall: "Bang Bang"..all I hear are 3 people singing/rapping/shouting, all at the top of their lungs, in an effort to drown each other out. That sort of "group effort", in which no one seems to give a rat's ass about what anybody else is doing, sacrificing cohesiveness and musicality for outdiva-ing the rest of the field, whether they be male OR female, drives me insane.
So it seems we basically run 50/50 on what we agreed on, which isn't too bad.

Re: The Boney Awards for 2014-Top 80 Songs
I only knew one of them, Uptown Girl. I had to make sure it was the one I was thinking of. Seems too pop to fit in with the rest. I do like it though. Wish I could move like the guys in the video.
I'll have to check out the others. I probably have heard some of them but just didn't know what they were.
Eric Carmen is still releasing songs? Who'd of thunk that?
Thanks for the list and the opportunity to expand my listening choices.

Carmen reunited with the other members of The Raspberries several years ago. They put out a cd and dvd of the tour..it was pretty good. It wasn't a permanent thing, though, and apparently they didn't come anywhere near me since I never heard a thing about a tour..too bad, I would've liked to have seen that show. As far as I know, this song is the only new thing he's done in a while..it was put on a compilation disc released at the beginning of '14.BackInTex wrote: Eric Carmen is still releasing songs? To be pedantic, it's Uptown Funk, not Uptown Girl.
