The 2013 Boney Awards-Top 80 Songs
And now, the tunes that had the biggest impact on my ears and brain last year.
As I alluded to in an earlier post, it's a pretty weird list. Some entries may
have you wondering if this is really me posting..to be honest, I'm not entirely sure myself.
At any rate, a couple more trivial tidbits before we get started...there are NINE remakes
on the list...I don't have the actual figures to back it up, but I'm pretty sure that is,
by far, a Boneys record. And finally, there are 2 songs by an ex-Beatle...and 2 songs
by the OFFSPRING of ex-Beatles! Hmmmm...who could THEY be?? Read on, and find out...
This year, for my Top songs of the year, I'm only going with 80. By the time I got
to around the mid 80's, I found there were just not enough tunes standing up to the
rigid Boney standards...fine songs, mind you, and placed on my iPod, just not Boney material.
And so we start with #80:
80) (You Will) Set The World On Fire-David Bowie
From Bowie's 1st album in almost forever comes this rocker. Welcome back, Ziggy Stardust.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exU3Fg1Pl-4
79) Your Gravity-Adam Daniel
If you followed my Boneys play-by-play over the years, you'll recall that I'm a sucker for
swoony falsetto-laden choruses outta the 60's playbook. Here's a midtempo number with that formula.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOE9xsEN4c4
78) In Your Blue Eyes-Justin Hayward
The most recognizable voice of the Moody Blues does a solo turn here with this sunny tune.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djd-e5BzWvg
77) Ever Loved Once-Blitzen Trapper
Music to tie-dye your shirt by.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax6PdHEg5fA
76) Sing Loud-Alpha Rev
As you'd expect of a song with this title, it has an anthemic, coming down from the
mountain vibe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGhMMpzIkm0
75) Young At Heart-David LaBrel
A power-poppin' goodie that'll make you feel 16 again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfZZUwZjWLw
74) Another is Waiting-The Avett Brothers
Another fine offering from these expert practioners of Americana music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LndPQw0-lA
73) Wisteria-James McCartney
The youngest of Paul & Linda's offspring rocks out here. Most of the standout tracks on
his "Me" album are the softer ones..this being the exception. He may not have the outstanding
voice of his dad, but he does know how to write a melody.
On the link below, please note that the tracks are listed in a box in the middle, to the
right of the picture of the album cover. sCROLL DOWN to Wisteria and press play arrow.
http://www.airplaydirect.com/music/JamesMcCartneyME/
72) Didn't Mean To Fall In Love-Boston
One of the last couple of tracks that vocalist Brad Delp recorded before his death.
Yes, he died in 2007, but Boston takes forever between albums. This one trades on the riff
from "More Than a Feeling, although it is a quieter song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4obU7gXZ4o
71) Third Man-The Duckworth Lewis Method
Side project from Pugwash (an obscure Irish band but a T-Bone fave) frontman Thomas Walsh.
Very ELO-ish.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEs5Bmc16YA
70) Away We Go-Prince of Spain
Don't know much about this act. Got the song as part of a free label sampler.
Nice modern pop song with a hummable melody.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLPkSDilUxQ
69) Don't Grow Up Too Soon-Candle Thieves
Sweet song written from the perspective of a soon-to-be-dad.
Unfortunately I could only find a partial cut of the tune:
http://www.mp3mixx.com/song/candle_thie ... n-44005922
here's a live acoustic version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aHFUk_XL0A
68) I Had Me A Girl-The Civil Wars
Wow. A raw, open wound of a song. Seriously, this one slaps you upside the head.
Powerful stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZANAhnPDZk
67) Amelita-Court Yard Hounds
Two-thirds of the Dixie Chicks. The sisters step out without their lead singer,
and dang, do they sound good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg4nbT_v7Xg
66) Rebel Beat-Goo Goo Dolls
Pop-Rock call to arms from these Buffalo boys.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUi8gQPsMdw
65) Bonfire Heart-James Blunt
When taken in small doses, he can be quite enjoyable. This melody sticks with you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1j1qwQQ8-Q
64) The One You Should've Let Go-The Lone Bellow
Lively Americana bopper.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxa_TqXgWHA
63) Annie's Song-Brett Dennen & Milow
With apologies to John Denver fans, I find the original to be insufferable.
In this remake, found on an interesting tribute album called "The Music Is You" (which
also features a power pop version of "Looking For Space" by Lemonheads frontman Evan
Dando!) a simpler, soft but peppy arrangement brings out a sweet innocence in the lyrics
that captures that optimistic "I'll love you forever" spirit of the early stages of
a love affair.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C10vIehUK8
62) All Better-Mayer Hawthorne
First of 3 tunes from a very good album. This one is a change-of-pace ballad
that strays from the jazz/R & B sound of most of the album. Hell, he sorta sounds like
Harry Connick Jr. in spots here!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dRcJVxfAT8
61) Boomerang-Barenaked Ladies
BNL also places 3 songs on my list. Here's the first. Pleasantly poppy.

Re: The 2013 Boney Awards-Top 80 Songs
60) Sugar On Top-The Dirtbombs
Calling All Cowbells! (and woodblocks, and marrocas, and every other percussion
instrument in the Band Room)...a 60's style rave up scores. Plus, ya gotta love
the band's name!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBqDDRDMz1s
59) House By The Sea-Moddi
Quiet, lovely tune.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX5FpPP4TSA
58) Little Green Honda-Tyson Leslie
Loud, noisy guitars and another melody outta the 60's playbook.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJHczmyKOq4
57) My True Story-Aaron Neville
A remake of what is quite possibly my favorite doo wop song ever (the original
was by the Jive Five). Neville's heavenly falsetto serves it well. Surprisingly,
this link was the best I could come up with.
Track two.
https://play.google.com/store/music/alb ... t5zv6bjjnm
56) Mandolin-Wyatt Funderburk
Another 60's inspired power-popper.
http://wyattfunderburk.bandcamp.com/track/mandolin
55) Stranger-Amos Lee
A perennial Boney winner. This one's a funky lil' thang.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpRz1rEH6wA
54) Believe It Or Not-Mike Ruekberg
Otherwise known as the theme from "The Greatest American Hero". Taken from
the 70's soft rock tribute lp (see the Boneys albums of the year thread). I like
this better than the original version...
http://monstersofliterock.bandcamp.com/ ... -it-or-not
53) A Tattered Line of String-The Postal Service
Side project of Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie, this is actually a new song
recorded for a reissue of an older album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2xNj630NBU
52) The Exit-J. Scott Bergman
Stark, haunting yet pretty melody.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDgvzf0CV6U
51) Make Believe-Lisa Mychols
Perfectly captures that early-60's girl group sound. Leslie Gore would be proud.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-S7LfpAcTT4
50) Let Me Roll It-Teddy Thompson.
Thompson had the #1 spot on the Boneys chart a couple of years ago. Here he remakes Sir Paul's
"Band on The Run" track for an album of Americana artist reboots. I especially
like the guitar work.
http://myfreemp3.eu/music/Teddy+Thompso ... Me+Roll+It
49) Marianne-Corin Ashley
If you had played this for me and told me it was a lost Badfinger track, I wouldn't have
batted an eye,. Remarkable.
https://myspace.com/corinashley/music/s ... -102115023
48) Preacher-One Republic
The anthemic type of track they are usually good at.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87brb1K5jag
47) Fired Up-Hanson
This is the third album in a row that I've liked. Time to face it..those "Mmmbop" boys
grew up...and got damn good. This song has a killer guitar lick, and it rocks!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUzyo6UJ1lc
46) Into The Light-Alfa 9
Jangle pop. Think mid-60's Byrds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17JVoz8iKi4
45) Symphony Lane-Five For Fighting
Pretty melody, lushly orchestrated.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2xw-MiJ__c
44) Records In Bed-Band Of Heathens
Midtempo easy-rocker extolling the virtues of those luscious stacks of vinyl.
Sorry, the best I can do is this incomplete live video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0XAD1JS ... Q3W7zXCM6I_
43) Devils 'N Darlins-Ed Roland & The Sweet Tea Project
Title track from the side project of the Collective Soul project. No nonsense,
no frills, all rockin' goodness on this number.
http://thesweetteaproject.bandcamp.com/ ... -darlins-2
42) Take This Dirty Water-Elton John
Tempo reminiscent of "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" matched to an early
Elton feel stylistically makes for a winning combination.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2GWJ8ENYGY
41) The Wire-Haim
The handclap/footstomp/bass drum of the Eagles' "Heartache Tonight" meets some clever
female vocal interplay.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TffpkE2GU4
The Top 40 is next....

Re: The 2013 Boney Awards-Top 80 Songs
Into the Top 40 we go...
40) The Legend of Josi & The Juke-The 1957 Tail-Fin Fiasco
You wouldn't expect some guys from The U.K. would be dead ringers
musically for Steely Dan, but just listen to this:
http://the1957tail-finfiasco.bandcamp.c ... i-the-juke
39) Pour A Little Poison-David Ford
A rowdy little tune, loose & fun.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GerXa-W7LAM
38) All Things Must Pass-The Liar's Club
Outstanding remake of the title tune of George Harrison's classic album.
Nice harmonies..
https://myspace.com/liarsclub2006/music ... -102658824
37) Two Fingers-Jake Bugg
He's an Englishman who has been compared to a young Bob Dylan.
I'm not hearing it myself. This song (which strays outside his folky comfort zone
and therefore not representative of his usual style) DID catch my ear. It's a bouncy
tune about knocking back a few.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9XwFecNXyU
36) Tomorrow Is Another Day-The Candle Thieves
Gentle 60's "Sunshine Pop" that channels The Association, Beach Boys, and the like.
A short sample clip is the best I could come up with:
http://www.mp3mixx.com/song/candle_thie ... y-44005873
35) Get The Girl Back-Hanson
A raucous R&B styled burner with some kickass horn action.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh8mQU-tNyM
34) Let It Go-Adele Dazeem...er...I mean, Idina Menzel
Broadway-styled showstopper from the Disney movie "Frozen". Academy Award winner for
best song from a movie. Menzel sings the heck out of it. That's M-E-N-Z-E-L, Travolta.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moSFlvxnbgk
33) Buried-Family Of The Year
Supplants "And When I Die" as the happiest song about dying that you're liable to hear.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3xwlLeK8ng
32) Frozen In Time-Street Corner Symphony
A capplela group that did well on the TV show "The Sing-Off". Unfortunately, this 30
second clip gives you neither the full chorus, nor the full dynamic range of the song.
Some mighty impressive vocal arrangements to be heard here.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00COE ... s_tlw_trk6
31) Sunshine-Court Yard Hounds
Those (ex?) Dixie Chicks are back again with this sprightly kiss-off to a Debbie
Downer type.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC5ouOML7G4
30) Satellites-James Blunt
Blunt's second entry on the list.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyLQjMC2Q38
29) The Stars Are Out-Mayer Hawthorne
Another artist who's been listening to some Steely Dan records. Stevie Wonder's been
on the turntable, too...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSEZ4iGU2w4
28) Brave-Sara Bareilles
This probably would've landed higher on the list had I not heard it 154,786 times in
commercials and such. Sorry, Sara...it IS a good song, I just need a break from it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQsqBqxoR4
27) Queenie Eye-Paul McCartney
The lyrics in the chorus are stupid (they come from a schoolyard game Macca played as a young
lad), but the melody is just eerie enough to make it interesting to listen to.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CfLUmVso30
26) Benny Rise and Shine-1957 Tail-Fin Fiasco
Well, this sucks..apparently this is no longer available..at least until it's reissued
in an expanded edition. No soundbite to be found. You'll just have to take my word for it-
if you like Steely Dan, you'd like this jazz-pop delight. I'll try to keep an eye out for
the reissue in the meantime.
25) We Don't Talk Anymore-Michael Carpenter
Another item from the #3 album (see Boneys album thread) covering 70's easy rock hits.Love this
one by the Aussie power-popper. Punches harder than the original.
http://monstersofliterock.bandcamp.com/ ... lk-anymore
24) Sad Angel-Fleetwood Mac
Lindsey Buckingham takes the lead on this uptempo outing.
Time was, F. Mac releasing new music was a major event. In 2013, hardly anybody knew that the
4 song disc this comes from even existed. Check those grey hairs, everyone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrRhMI22-UI
23) Counting Stars-One Republic
Hearing/seeing this on VH-1 for 6 months cost this one a higher ranking, in all likelihood.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT_nvWreIhg
22) If So-Atlas Genius
Uptempo modern pop nugget with fluid guitars and a stick-in-your-head melody.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi3Gv1udO5Y
21) Did I Say That Out Loud?-Barenaked Ladies
Hear this pop gem once and you'll be humming this all day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIhFrzZPCfg
Next up are the big guns. There WILL be some surprises...
40) The Legend of Josi & The Juke-The 1957 Tail-Fin Fiasco
You wouldn't expect some guys from The U.K. would be dead ringers
musically for Steely Dan, but just listen to this:
http://the1957tail-finfiasco.bandcamp.c ... i-the-juke
39) Pour A Little Poison-David Ford

http://www.mp3mixx.com/song/candle_thie ... y-44005873
35) Get The Girl Back-Hanson
A raucous R&B styled burner with some kickass horn action.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh8mQU-tNyM
34) Let It Go-Adele Dazeem...er...I mean, Idina Menzel
Broadway-styled showstopper from the Disney movie "Frozen". Academy Award winner for
best song from a movie. Menzel sings the heck out of it. That's M-E-N-Z-E-L, Travolta.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moSFlvxnbgk
33) Buried-Family Of The Year
Supplants "And When I Die" as the happiest song about dying that you're liable to hear.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3xwlLeK8ng
32) Frozen In Time-Street Corner Symphony
A capplela group that did well on the TV show "The Sing-Off". Unfortunately, this 30
second clip gives you neither the full chorus, nor the full dynamic range of the song.
Some mighty impressive vocal arrangements to be heard here.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00COE ... s_tlw_trk6
31) Sunshine-Court Yard Hounds
Those (ex?) Dixie Chicks are back again with this sprightly kiss-off to a Debbie
Downer type.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC5ouOML7G4
30) Satellites-James Blunt
Blunt's second entry on the list.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyLQjMC2Q38
29) The Stars Are Out-Mayer Hawthorne
Another artist who's been listening to some Steely Dan records. Stevie Wonder's been
on the turntable, too...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSEZ4iGU2w4
28) Brave-Sara Bareilles
This probably would've landed higher on the list had I not heard it 154,786 times in
commercials and such. Sorry, Sara...it IS a good song, I just need a break from it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQsqBqxoR4
27) Queenie Eye-Paul McCartney
The lyrics in the chorus are stupid (they come from a schoolyard game Macca played as a young
lad), but the melody is just eerie enough to make it interesting to listen to.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CfLUmVso30
26) Benny Rise and Shine-1957 Tail-Fin Fiasco
Well, this sucks..apparently this is no longer available..at least until it's reissued
in an expanded edition. No soundbite to be found. You'll just have to take my word for it-
if you like Steely Dan, you'd like this jazz-pop delight. I'll try to keep an eye out for
the reissue in the meantime.
25) We Don't Talk Anymore-Michael Carpenter
Another item from the #3 album (see Boneys album thread) covering 70's easy rock hits.Love this
one by the Aussie power-popper. Punches harder than the original.
http://monstersofliterock.bandcamp.com/ ... lk-anymore
24) Sad Angel-Fleetwood Mac
Lindsey Buckingham takes the lead on this uptempo outing.
Time was, F. Mac releasing new music was a major event. In 2013, hardly anybody knew that the
4 song disc this comes from even existed. Check those grey hairs, everyone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrRhMI22-UI
23) Counting Stars-One Republic
Hearing/seeing this on VH-1 for 6 months cost this one a higher ranking, in all likelihood.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT_nvWreIhg
22) If So-Atlas Genius
Uptempo modern pop nugget with fluid guitars and a stick-in-your-head melody.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi3Gv1udO5Y
21) Did I Say That Out Loud?-Barenaked Ladies
Hear this pop gem once and you'll be humming this all day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIhFrzZPCfg
Next up are the big guns. There WILL be some surprises...

Re: The 2013 Boney Awards-Top 80 Songs
Into the home stretch we go! Fasten your seat belts..
20) Reach Out Richard-Mayer Hawthorne
Another Steely Dan inspired song. 70's R & B influence also in play.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5tPP04FalQ
19) A Town Called Jubilee-Elton John
Vintage Elton. Would not have sounded out of place on "Tumbleweed
Connection".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiIjn7EBJdM
18) Going To Birmingham-Ed Roland & The Sweet Tea Project
I'm reminded of The Travelling Wilburys here. It's got that "End Of The
Line" feel to it.
http://thesweetteaproject.bandcamp.com/ ... rmingham-2
17) Someday-Julian Lennon
To answer the question "Whatever became of Julian Lennon?", he's been making
good music that nobody hears. This is one of two songs newly recorded for the
reissue of his most recent album, Everything Changes (2011). It has Aerosmith's Steven Tyler on
background vocals, and you will hear elements of John, Paul AND George here.
I will also say that, had I known of its existence at the time, Everything Changes
would have won a Boney for 2011.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOSyjiMmsxY
16) She's My Girl-Five For Fighting
The melody is so endearing that I am forgiving the occasional goofy lyrics ("She's
better than ice cream, I know you know what I mean").
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKRFrLzxuZA
15) Little Black Dress-Sara Bareilles
That 60's girl group sound again. Maybe a Dusty Springfield vibe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0z64rwqhnw
14) Beautiful-Parthenon Huxley
This guy has been dancing around the perimeter of success for years, but it has eluded
his grasp. This song displays the evidence that the guy can craft one hell of a melody.
30 second clip: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BV8 ... s_tlw_trk6
13) Wagon Wheel-Darius Rucker
I am not a big fan of the music found on the current country music stations. Every
now and then, however, something does catch my ear, like this good-natured remake of a
song by the Old Crow Medicine Show by the former Hootie & The Blowfish frontman.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvKyBcCDOB4
12) New-Paul McCartney
OK, let's be upfront: this is no "Hey Jude" or "Yesterday" but after 52 years of making
records, Sir Paul is still capable of writing a memorable melody. And that's pretty
impressive. This has a "good Day Sunshine" feel to it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkbbP0ozyMs
11) Come To Me-Goo Goo Dolls
This is a really sweet song. Makes me want to propose to Nancy and renew our vows just
so we can play this song at the ceremony..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8VMYLniuDk
10) Popular Song-MIKA w/Ariana Grande
Heavens to Murgatroid! There's a Nickolodeon star (Sam & Cat) in my Top Ten! Can't help
it..she joins MIKA on this song, built around the melody of the chorus of "Popular" from
the Broadway musical "Wicked". It's irresistable to my ears, and the video is a riot..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmcdLOjGVzw
9) On And On-The Sonic Excutive Sessions
From that 70's Songs remake album again. It's an update on the Steven Bishop hit. When
those layered harmonies kick in on the bridge and continue on the last verse, this is taken
to another level and blows away the original/
http://monstersofliterock.bandcamp.com/track/on-and-on
I'll Bet On You-Toad The Wet Sprocket
The group that took its name from a Monty Python sketch returns after a long absence.
This has elements of that "California Sound" and features some nice background vocals
to counterpoint the lead voice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kkh1_sM-sNU
7) Chasing The Sun-Sara Bareilles
My favorite track from "The Blessed Unrest". There's a note that she hits in the chorus
that doesn't go where I expected it to, and that one interesting note makes the song for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFFberbflbU
6) Odds Are-Barenaked Ladies
First time I heard this, it didn't leave my head for days. BNL is good at that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Sw9Fh6uk4Q
5) Roar-Katy Perry
Good Lord, what's happened to me? I never in a million years thought she'd get a Boney
at all, much less one this high. Can't stand her, to be honest. So I can't tell you why this
song got me where the others missed, it just did. Undeniably catchy. I may need therapy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CevxZvSJLk8
4) Every Man Should Know-Harry Connick Jr.
Imagine Sinatra crooning a 60's R & B ballad and you get an idea of what's happening
here. Really, though, this is a beautiful song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OzE1fk-T9Q
3) Get Lucky-Daft Punk
OK kids, here it is. I could try and save face by saying that there's a
lot of Stevie Wonder here, and if you dropped in a kickass horn section it could pass
for an Earth, Wind & Fire song (and I am proud to be a fan of both artists), but I must
face facts..this would be right at home on a 1978 dance floor tucked in between Gloria
Gaynor and The Trammps. Yes, folks, it's true. For all intents and purposes, this is a
D-I-S-C-O song, and I likes it!! There's some nice guitar interplay here, and the damn
thing is infectious. I think I was sold on it when I saw them perform it on the Grammys.
When the aforementioned Stevie Wonder joined in, and stapled his song "Another Star" to
this one, I was hooked...pretty much waving my hands in the air like I didn't care...sigh
The vocal is by Pharrell Williams, currently monopolizing the charts with "Happy".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5EofwRzit0
2) Pompeii-Bastille
Tribal chants and a wall of percussion sounding like the USC Marching Band Drum Corps.
Oh, and a catchy, exuberant chorus. What's not to love?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F90Cw4l-8NY
1) SAFE AND SOUND-CAPITAL CITIES
THAT TRUMPET...OR THAT SYNTHESIZER THAT SOUNDS LIKE A TRUMPET..I STILL AM NOT 100%
SURE, SINCE PRETTY MUCH EVERY OTHER INSTRUMENT HERE IS BASED ON A KEYBOARD....WHATEVER
IT IS, IT CARRIES WHAT IS ALREADY A PRETTY NIFTY TUNE INTO A GREAT PIECE OF POP. I HAVE
PROBABLY HEARD THIS SONG 11,453 TIMES THANKS TO ITS PLACEMENT IN A TV COMMERCIAL AND ON
HEAVY ROTATION ON VH-1, AND I AM STILL NOT SICK OF IT. PRETTY GOOD EVIDENCE TO LEAD ME
TO CONCLUDE THAT IT'S MY FAVORITE SONG OF THE YEAR..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47dtFZ8CFo8
Thus comes to an end this year's installment of the Boneys. Lord willing, they'll return
next year....hopefully earlier than May, though...
Hope you'll discover something you like, and as always, I encourage your feedback on anything
you liked here, or what you liked in 2013 that was NOT on the list.
Thanks for reading!!

Re: The 2013 Boney Awards-Top 80 Songs
Wow... I really thought I would recognize more since 2013 was undoubtedly the year I paid attention to (and liked) more new music than any other since my 80's heyday. But I only got 6 here... 5 from the Mecca soundtrack. The only non-Mecca song I recognize is what I figured the disco song had to be... "Get Lucky". I don't see how anyone could not possibly like that song.
And of course I wasn't really expecting you to include that other song Pharrell Williams was involved in (which is my clear cut #1), but maybe a tiny part of me was holding out for it...
For full disclosure, here is every Mecca song (that I recognize) that has ever been ranked in the Boneys:
2013:
#28 - Brave - Sara Bareilles (Fall 13)
#23 - Counting Stars - OneRepublic (Winter & Summer 14)
#13 - Wagon Wheel (!!!) - Darius Rucker (Fall 13)
#5 - Roar - Katy Perry (Winter & Summer 14)
#1 - Safe & Sound - Capital Cities (Winter & Fall 13, Winter 14)
2012:
#54 - Anna Sun - Walk the Moon (Summer & Fall 13)
#40 - Demons - Imagine Dragons (Fall 13, Winter 14)
#30 - Stubborn Love - Lumineers (Summer 13)
#26 - She's So Mean - Matchbox 20 (Winter 13)
#21 - On Top of the World - Imagine Dragons (Winter & Summer 14)
#17 - Everybody Talks - Neon Trees (Summer 13)
#16 - Hall of Fame - The Script (Fall 13, Winter 14)
#15 - Lover of the Light - Mumford & Songs (Who can keep track?... Mumford's all over the Mecca CD and their crap all sounds the same to me)
#13 - Between the Raindrops - Lifehouse with Natasha Beddingfield (Winter & Summer 14)
#11 - It's Time - Imagine Dragons (Summer 13, Winter 14)
#7 - I Will Wait - Mumford & Sons (See above)
#4 - Home - Phillip Phillips (Summer 13)
#3 - Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen (Summer 13)
#2 - Ho Hey - Lumineers (Summer 13)
Special nod to #41 - Just Breathe - Willie Nelson (The Pearl Jam version was on the Summer 13 CD)
2011:
#26 - Set Fire To The Rain - Adele (Winter 13)
#16 - Keep Your Head Up - Andy Grammer (Winter & Fall 13)
#10 - Brighter Than The Sun - Colbie Callait (Winter 13)
2010:
#56 - Rhythm of Love - Plain White T's (Winter 13, Winter & Summer 14)
#2 - Just the Way You Are - Bruno Mars (Winter & Fall 13, Winter 14)
2008:
#64 - 1,2,3,4 - Plain White T's (Winter 13)
#42 - Love Song - Sara Bareilles (Winter 13, Winter & Summer 14)
#1 - Viva la Liva - Coldplay (Summer 13)
2007:
#2 Girls in Their Summer Clothes - Bruce Springsteen (Summer 13)

This is a great lineup -- thanks!
I recognized several because of regular airplay courtesy of RadioDude, then looked in on a few more based on your description -- wow! I'll try to get to all of them soon.

Re: The 2013 Boney Awards-Top 80 Songs
Looks and sounds great.
I would put Safe and Sound even more firmly in the disco category than Get Lucky -- more repetitive, and more of that annoying backbeat that elektronika has now adapted for their own purposes. And I do think the solo is a synthesizer -- they're so good these days that it's difficult to tell the difference without doing a Fourier transform, but this one just sounds too bright to be an actual trumpet.
Great to see and hear the Boneys again.

You are the best!
I am STILL obsessed with "Chasing the Sun" (I know the note you mean and I can't hit it unless I drop the whole song an octave) but yeah, "Brave" needs a little space.
I am heading out of town for a few days but will dive into this list with all paws when I get back.
Thank you for keeping so many of us fresh!

Re: The 2013 Boney Awards-Top 80 Songs
#2 Pompeii can be added to the Mecca list. My radio station just started playing this song this week, giving me a title to go along with the familiar Mecca earworm that's been on the last two if not maybe the last three CD's....

For what it's worth, "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love" was on Boston's Corporate America album in 2002. This version is from the Life, Love & Hope album that has a ton of re-mixed and re-fiddled-with tracks, cause Tom Scholz is never done with a track.
I didn't care for this album much, but I will give it a few more listens. I don't know why it bothered me that there were five lead singers, and I never really have gotten into any tracks with women lead singers for them even though I wanted to. I know it's a Brad Delp adoration thing, but I liked Fran Cosmo OK, too, and he's not on this one.
Every track reminds me how much Boston is about Scholz, which is too bad in some ways. He just is such a perfectionist that no one can stand to work with him for very long.
I know Delp's voice would probably have changed by now and maybe he wouldn't still be hitting all the high notes, but I still miss him.

Get Lucky hit me the same way. The first time I heard it I was like, "Is this a long lost disco hit? Why don't I remember it?" Then found out it was new. Puts me in the mood to move!
Just discovered Pompeii recently - very catchy. Has a sort of 80's feel to me.
<3 Counting Stars. Can never seem to get tired of it. Brave, OTOH...like it, but yeah, give it a rest.
But Katy Perry??? tsk tsk!

I know, I know...and after the way she crucified "Yesterday" on that Beatles tribute show, I go and give her number 5...vettech wrote: But Katy Perry??? tsk tsk!
Believe me, I am ashamed of myself, but honesty was promised.
The embarrassment continues..I recently heard..and rather liked...a song called "Story Of My Life"..THEN I find out it's by One Direction...ONE-FREAKIN' DIRECTION!!!! I am apparently turning into an 11 year-old girl!!!!!!
I gotta go listen to some Steely Dan or Van Morrison or something...quick!

Didn't realize that the song was a re-do...Corporate America went in and out of my ears the first time I heard it. To be honest, this was the only song I came close to liking on the new album. The rest is pretty bleh.Ritterskoop wrote:For what it's worth, "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love" was on Boston's Corporate America album in 2002. littlebeast13 wrote:Wow...
Wow.. I didn't realize I'd been doing this that long. Thanks for the recap.

I'm not surprised since that song seems to be typical of a lot of your Boney songs. It's a pretty good song (though I'm in oversaturation mode with it given having to hear it constantly on the radio and at Mecca)... but I still prefer one that's more 1D's standard fare... "What Makes You Beautiful"....
