2012 Boney Awards-The Songs

#1 Post by T_Bone0806 » Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:29 am

We move on now to my 100 favorite songs of the year. Before we get to #100,
though, let me give some props to a song that got noticed in 2011, but was in
fact released on an album in 2010. It's "Moneygrabber" by Fitz and the Tantrums,
a terrific piece of 60's/70's soul-inspired pop with a lead vocalist who's a
dead ringer vocally for Daryl Hall. I decided in the long run that rules is
rules, therefore this song was ineligible for inclusion for this year's awards.
Had I bent the rules, it's pretty likely this would've made the Top 10. Ah
well...

OK, now that my conscience is cleared, let's begin the countdown....

#100. Illumination-Lindsey Buckingham

Lindsey's solo work was always a little more "out there" than his output with
Fleetwood Mac. That being said, even at his quirkiest, he never loses his gift
for a catchy melody. More evidence of that is here on this standout from his
2011 release "Seeds We Sew".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4PUa-U-Rzw

#99. I Would Do Anything For You-Foster the People

Speaking of catchy, howzabout this little number?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOIfNyBmZ0g

#98. Are You Ready-Fatty Gets a Stylist

Not the sort of thing I usually like, but for some reason this one does it for
me. A bit of..well actually, quite a bit of, No Doubt influence here. New York
State residents may recognize this from its use in the N.Y. State Lottery
commercials.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5-B-iR_ho8

#97. Richie and Ruben-Fountains of Wayne

I'm already questioning my ranking of this one. Shoulda placed it higher, but
when I made my list and checked it twice, this is where I placed it, and I
promised myself that once I "made up my mind" I wouldn't change the rankings no
matter what, so here it is. The lyrics are a hoot, and the music pure ear candy.
In other words, business as usual for these dudes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-bikVt01L0

#96. Sad Song-The Cars

The 2011 reunion of Ric Ocasek with 3 of the other 4 Cars members came up a bit
lacking due to the notable absence of the late Benjamin Orr, whose vocal turns
on Cars records added variety to the "acquired taste" voice of leader Ocasek.
Still, there were a few pleasures to be found on "Move Like This", including
this number that would not have been out of place on "Candy-O".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxqxNzlEFM4

#95. Memories-Panic at the Disco

Considering how much I loved their previous album, I guess I was bound to be
disappointed when PATD reverted to their old style for their album "Vices and
Virtues". I did like this song a lot, though, along with a couple of other cuts
that came close to making the cut for this countdown.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrihioC_LXg

#94. Here's Your Freakin' Song-Bowling For Soup**

These lyrics crack me up. It's a "be careful what you wish for" tale of a
musician whose significant other keeps asking him why he's never written a song
for HER. And so he does. Uh oh......

**Parental Warning--Naughty words in this one**

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WZ58ir2vE0

#93. Every Teardrop is a Waterfall-Coldplay

Another album that disappointed me overall. There were 4 songs I liked on "Mylo
Xyloto", 3 of which made this countdown. What I liked I REALLY liked. What I
didn't...well, I really DIDN'T.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kf_6BWcOOg

#92. Comeback Kid (That's My Dog)-Brett Dennen

Thanks to Mini for tipping me off to this one. A bouncy, happy, singalong song
for sure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z18kgaoTJw

#91. Well..Allright-Lyle Lovett

From one of two Buddy Holly tribute albums released this year. Lyle, Buddy, and
some rockin' mandolin. What's not to like?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbB4qLBCFOg&ob=av2e

#90. The Hungry Years-The Leisure Society

This outfit is definitely in the "think outside the usual pop box" category.
Their style is a little of this, a little of that, usually employing a number of
voices and varied instrumentation. The chorus on this reminds me of ELO's "Can't
Get it Out of My Head" for some reason. It's got a pretty melody at the heart of
it, at any rate.

http://www.myspace.com/theleisuresociet ... s-80913676

#89. The Meaning of the Blues-Joe Bonamassa

Guitar Slinger from my neck of the woods (hails originally from the Utica NY
area), Joe plays a style that you don't hear much of any more. He would have
been just one of many excellent blues rock guitarists had he been plying his
trade in the 70's/80's, but today let us thank Heavens he is keeping the torch
lit. This is a nasty little slow blues burner with some pretty decent fretwork.
Go Joe!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnqTINa-VBg

#88. When Reality Hits You-The Genuine Fakes

A 60's inspired power popper from this band that comes all the way to us from
Sweden!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr0EnPimx-Y

#87. Open Arms-Elbow

The power in this one comes from the anthemic chorus, which sounds as if it
should be sung in a pub in the UK or by a full soccer stadium crowd. Every time
I hear this song I can picture the Guinesses raised high...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJV71cW40OQ

#86. Don't Give Up On Us-The Maine

Just a nice modern pop tune with a very strong hook in the chorus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8ky95Mac_Q

#85. Synthesizers-Butch Walker & the Black Widows

I've loved this guy's music since his days in The Marvelous 3. He makes his money
as a songwriter/producer these days (Pink/AVril Lavigne/Fall Out Boy/Weezer/
Panic At The Disco) and many others, but still manages to put out an album almost
every year. This song carries with it a little bit of the DNA from "Come on
Eileen", at least to my ears. There were a couple of other tunes from his latest
album that barely missed this countdown, but I settled for this as "the one".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94b3gMZGorc&ob=av3e

#84. Gathering Mercury-Colin Hay

This dreamlike number is the first of three appearances on this list by the
former frontman for Men at Work.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU4_4lHiC-k

#83. Turning Tables-Adele

Considering the ranking of her "21" on my album list, it shouldn't surprise you
that this is far from the last time you'll see this young lady on the countdown.
She sings the hell out of this tearjerker.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx7sLNyIeQk

#82. Faster-Matt Nathanson

Lively toe-tapper from the guy who gave us "Come On Get Higher".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyjQFdeFox8&ob=av2e

#81. Iridescent-Linkin Park

This was heard in the movie "Transformers: Dark of the Moon". I dunno, the song
works for me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLYiIBCN9ec&ob=av2e

We're just getting started. #80-#61 coming up....

#2 Post by Sistine Fanny » Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:33 am

I'm 3/20 on having at least heard the song. I'm 1/20 on liking them. (If the Matt Nathanson one is the song I'm thinking it is.)

We would be in SO much trouble if we ever had to take a road trip together.....

EDIT: I just checked the youtube link and it IS the song I was thinking it was, so I'm officially 1/20 now. Even better, the advert before the song was vevo.com and a Pitbull concert they'll be streaming on February 21st. W00t!!!!!1

Reading the Boneys has paid off already....

Re: 2012 Boney Awards-The Songs

#3 Post by T_Bone0806 » Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:34 am

#80. Beautiful Life-James Morrison

There's been a lot of British singers plowing the soul/R & B fields as of late.
This guy's been around a few years but the female singers (Adele, Duffy, etc.)
have been getting most of the attention. I rather like this one. Would not have
been out of place on any 70's soulster's album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rhXDLnKkvU

#79. Baby Mine-Brian Wilson

This comes from an album of Disney songs done by the former mastermind of The
Beach Boys. Here Brian and his superb backing band apply those gorgeous
multilayered harmonies to the sentimental tune from "Dumbo"...you know the one..
where Mama Jumbo rocks little Dumbo in her trunk through the bars of the cage
she's been imprisoned in. I'm getting all lumpy-throated just thinking about it.
Brian's voice is not the beautiful instrument we remember from "Don't Worry Baby"
and "Caroline No", but here the vulnerablilty and innocence that comes through
works. Besides, those harmonies.......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3VFG7TJGpY

#78. Breathing Fire-Marissa Levy

Bangles/Lauper/Go-Go's, only on a quiet level.

http://www.amazon.com/Breathing-Fire/dp ... 59&sr=1-16

#77. They Don't Know-Michael Carpenter

Aussie powerpopmeister covers the Tracey Ullman hit from the 80's. Nice
harmonies, a little punchier. This is just a great song period. I loved the
original as well.

http://michaelcarpenter.bandcamp.com/tr ... ont-know-2

#76. Flying High in the U.S.A.-Sam Hawksley

No frills meat and potatoes pop-rock with that midwestern flavor and a bit of
country seasoning. Which is interesting since the dude is also from Australia.

http://www.myspace.com/samhawksley/musi ... a-85013148

#75. Paper Airplane-Alison Krauss & Union Station

I'm not big on country most of the time, but what I do like from that genre I
REALLY like. Krauss is more of the bluegrass persuasion anyway, but she has one
of the sweetest, pure voices a'goin', and I'm a fan. It's a sweet whisper in my
ear. This is a sad, lovely song, the title track from her oustanding album of
last year with Union Station.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-0drZqMdR4&ob=av2e

#74. Soundtrack of My Summer-Mike Viola

Another artist I wish was better known. That's his voice singing the lead on the
title track of the movie "That Thing You Do". He has a great pop sensibility and
writes some of the best melodic pop out there.

http://www.myspace.com/mikeviola/music/ ... r-83543987

#73. The Branches Grow-Piers Faccini

Stark, brooding ballad that just kinda burrowed into my brain.

http://www.myspace.com/piersfaccini/mus ... w-84349065

#72. Breathe Out, Breathe In-The Zombies

Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent reunited The Zombies a couple of years back. This
is not just a nostalgia trip, however. It doesn't SOUND like an oldies act.
Well, not REAL old anyway. This one has a Steely Dan flavor to it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4wpHjAkY-I

#71. Flightless Bird American Mouth (Wedding Version)-Iron & Wine

From the soundtrack of the latest "Twilight" movie, this one has the feel of
a dark smoky lounge, last call, three people in the joint, and a small combo
playing in the corner lost in their music and trying not to think about how
those three people are paying no attention to them as their noses are buried in
their last whiskey of the night.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_d_Tfp6kSc&feature=fvst

#70. You Make Me Want To Clean My Room-Halfday

Funny song title caught my attention, 70's-styled am radio tune kept it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joRn47MAigQ

#69. Daisy-Curtains For You

Nicely paced pop tune with a well-placed falsetto hook in the chorus from this
Seattle-based band.

http://www.myspace.com/curtains4you/mus ... y-81418351

#68. Even The Rain-Gabe Dixon

This guy first came to my attention with the song "Find My Way", which played
over the opening credits of the Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds/Betty White movie
"The Proposal". The album it came from had a lot of good stuff on it, and I
found a few more things to like on his 2011 release, especially this pretty
little number. It's so innocent and sweet sounding, I think maybe he wrote it
for Angel Squirrel.

http://www.myspace.com/gabedixon/music/ ... n-83522811

#67. Red-Michael Grimm

Winner of Season 5 of "America's Got Talent", this soulful ballad plays to his
strengths.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlM7Vp1NNA0

#66. London Bridge is Falling Down-Peter Bradley Adams

Gentle accoustic folky ballad with a nice female harmony part and tasteful
strings. Hey, you can even download this one free on Amazon.com!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMEFHXHHq3Y

http://www.amazon.com/London-Bridge-Is- ... 699&sr=1-4

#65. Running Away-The Red Button

Love this band. They stray from their typical 60's influenced style for this
midtempo ballad. Nice piano accompaniment in the chorus and a beautiful string
arrangement highlight it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VtcOr3r-gs

#64. Flower-Amos Lee

Gospel-flavored entry from this fellow who never fails to place at least a
couple of tunes on the Boneys list with each release. This year is no exception.
Look for him again MUCH later in the countdown.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW85s8wX1LE&ob=av2e

#63. Middle of Life-Steve Robinson

Transplanted English folkie who now lives in Florida and a former sideman for
Roger McGuinn (The Byrds). This comes from an ep released in November. Fiddle
and a swaying beat flavor it nicely.

http://steverobinson.bandcamp.com/track/middle-of-life

#62. Take Me Back Again-Teddy Thompson

This guy scored big with my ears in 2011. Here we have a Phil Spector-styled
number with just the right amount of heartachy longing in his voice. We'll meet
up with Mr. Thompson again later on.

http://www.myspace.com/teddythompson/mu ... n-79008692

#61. Let It Go-Zombies

Style here is very reminiscent of Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale". It's
derivative, sure, but it's still pretty darn good I think.

http://www.myspace.com/thezombies/music ... o-81458422

#4 Post by T_Bone0806 » Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:41 am

#60. I Can't Wait-David Mead

An easygoing "get up and greet the morning sun" smile-inducer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3hYZ79zD68

#59. Almost Easy-O.A.R.

A hint of reggae in an island vibe carries this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQaBNt3Apxs

#58. Lost and Found-Katie Herzig

Versatile artist marries ABBA in the verse to a Coldplay-like anthem-chorus
to positive effect.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k3rNbPtXt4

#57. When The World is Asleep-Freddy Monday

Verses are pleasant enough, but the chorus is pop-lite heaven. Track 11 at the
link below. Couldn't find a video, just a 30-sec. soundbite.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/everyt ... d433724489

#56. Down By The Water-The Decemberists

A bit heavier than most of this band's material, this is more R.E.M. territory
than the usual folk based material. They do it well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR9DjdMrpHg

#55. You Are a Tourist-Death Cab For Cutie

Smart, quirky yet melodic pop. This had a cool video to accompany it. Nice
guitar riff as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkk5wViJo-I&ob=av2e

#54. Action Hero-Fountains of Wayne

This band is, I believe, incapable of composing a tune that isn't catchy as hell.
Often, though, underneath those sunny melodies lie some fairly dark lyrics.
If you can take your mind off the pretty tune here, you'll discover that the
"Action Hero" is in deep poop.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6_9FotIZYY

#53. Big E Chord-Ralph Covert & The Bad Examples

A song about being bitten by the rock & roll bug and picking up a guitar,
joining a band, and all of the beer-soaked, smoky barroom nights that
hitting that first power chord starts. Oh, I can so relate. If you like Cheap
Trick, you'll like this one, as singer dude sounds a lot like Robin Zander.

http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_8333110

#52. You Could Keep Me Talking-The Leisure Society

If those 17th century dandies were alive today, they'd be minueting to this one.
Rock-n-Roll Mozart, I tells ya.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm-QtBmLP30

#51. Always-Gerry Beckley

Oh, I shouldn't like this, it's so sappy and sugary. I can't help myself. It's
got an irresistably gooey center that sticks in your head and won't let go.
Shouldn't be surprising since this comes courtesy of the member of America who
contributed such items as "I Need You", "Sister Golden Hair", and "Daisy Jane"
to that group's canon. At 2 minutes in length, though, it's in the "blink and
you'll miss it" category. 30 sec. soundclip link below (track 1)

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/unfort ... d427592569

#50. Surf Little Girl-Sonic Surf City

Yes, it does have that nostalgic 60's sound, attached to a sentimental melody.
It also updates that sound with punchier guitars. The chorus builds to a
powerful emotional effect. Best I could do is below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO8rHf9Klhg

#49. Ghost on a Canvas-Glen Campbell

Title track from Glen's very moving chronicle of dealing with the advancing
stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7kw5zXVFVQ

#48. Sorry-The Smithereens

Rockin' little workout from these Power Pop stalwarts. What a great band. This
is one of those songs I wished had come out when I was still rockin', 'cuz I can
so hear us playin' it and it would've been right up my alley vocally. Damn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kvKr1fdhEc

#47. Back of My Head-Ben Wilkins

Sounds like Ben Folds on the verses and early Hall & Oates on the choruses. Some
tasty piano, too.

http://www.reverbnation.com/artist/song_details/6045691

#46. Knee-Jerk Reaction-David Mead

Second entry in our countdown from this popmeister. This one will remind you of
Paul Simon's "Me & Julio Down By the Schoolyard", I'll bet. Mead's album was one
of my most pleasant discoveries of the year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt5NG3bsA5A

#45. I Told You I Was Poor-Skeleton Staff

From the band that gave us the #3 song on last year's Boneys ("The World Wants
To Dance With Me") comes this offbeat number that is 1 part 10cc and 3 parts
Queen (the guitars are pure Brian May). Weird but catchy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyEFlW8NOx4

#44. Best Day of Your Life-Katie Herzig

This is so "adorkable" I can hardly contain myself. The instrumental arrangement
is delightful, the melody undeniably grabby, the rhythm reminiscent of "The
Safety Dance".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIBlK6eLNW4

#43. Caught In The Middle-The Red Button

Beatles. Searchers. 1964. 'Nuff said.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A0t-4z5lPU

#42. Summer is Gone-Dreaming in Stereo

Cascading strings take this dreamy ballad into the Heavens.

http://dreaminginstereo.bandcamp.com/tr ... er-is-gone

#41. The Answer Was You-Sloan

Canadian Power Pop band. Falsetto driven chorus provides the meaty hook here.
The clip here has the first 3 songs of the album posted. To get THIS one, move
ahead to 2:56 into the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5_SwgL_7nA

We move into the Top 40 next.

Re: 2012 Boney Awards-The Songs

#5 Post by T_Bone0806 » Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:50 am

Into the Top 40 we go..

#40. King of the Crosswords-David Mead

Sprightly ode to a man who could work the word puzzles. Horns and lilting
background "la-la-la's" contribute to the song's appeal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN9GtHlHLxo

#39. A Road Song-Fountains of Wayne

The FOW guys offer their unique take on the stereotypical "life on the road"
song. As with all things from this band, it's anything but the typical
travellin' band ode. The lyrics are a hoot (such as "..I know that it's not
what you'd call necessary, and I know that I'm no Steve Perry"), yet the
melody is sweet as sugar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltwoI5gstfY

#38. Under a Cloud-The Bangles

Trippy, hippie standout from their "hey, did anyone notice we're back?" album
"Sweetheart of the Sun". Groovy, man! Could only find a partial sample of the
song, unfortunately.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ap1zTAPAOVY

#37. Cannibal-Tally Hall

The chorus here, with its tight harmonies, is irresistable. Not too hard to
imagine this on one of Lindsey Buckingham's solo albums.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHxITbgCVhw

#36. Oohs and Aahs-NEEDTOBREATHE

This sounds like it should be playing over the closing credits of a movie
featuring Jason, Michael Myers, or Freddie Krueger. The sound here is dark and
menacing. BOOO!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKQGedVC73Y

#35. Days/This Time Tomorrow-Ray Davies with Mumford & SOns

This comes from an album that finds Ray (leader of The Kinks) revisiting some of
his songbook with the help of other artists (Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne
among others). This one works the best I think, as Mumford & Sons (winners of
the #1 spot for both song and album in last year's Boneys) really capture the
spirit of these two songs. The video below is a live version, couldn't find one
with the studio version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJOliU6z4cQ

#34. What A Little Bit of Love Can Do-Jeff Bridges

As he showed us in the movie "Crazy Heart", Bridges' gruff voice works quite
well with the right material, like this pleasant country swamp-rocker.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS_2P1DnNWE

#33. Gateway To The Stars-Skeleton Staff

I hear elements of both solo Paul McCartney and Hall & Oates in this item from
this Aussie band (Is it just me, or is there an awful lot of unknown talent
hiding out Down Under?). Extremely hummable chorus here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R4Oc7RlxDQ

#32. There's No Me...Without You-Glen Campbell

This is flat out gorgeous. A tribute to the wife who is standing by him through
this journey into the unknown he is taking. The final cut on his final album, he
heads into the next stage in a matter most fitting..the last 3 minutes of the
song is 3 minutes of some lovely guitar work...I came thisclose to tears when I
first heard it..it still has a very emotional effect on me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Pxmg4KSrmM

#31. Someone Like You-Adele

At one point last year, I was convinced that this would be at or near #1 on my
year-end list. Then an office mate brought in a mix of songs she favored..and
played it repeatedly. This one was on it and it seemed that I was hearing it
every 10 minutes. This went on for about 3 weeks until she must've noticed the
"I'm gonna kill somebody" look on my face whenever this song came on and put 2
and 2 together and came up with "my life may be in danger". Anyway, no matter
how objective I tried to be and no matter how likely that 2-3 years from now I'll
like it again, right now I'm sick of it and can't rank it any higher than this.
She sings it terrifically, no denying it, and it's a beautiful and powerful
song, I just need a moratorium on it for awhile.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLQl3WQQoQ0&ob=av2e

#30. For The First Time-The Script

Very pretty power ballad from the Irish band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPEBN2dVNUY&ob=av2e

#29. Music All Around Me (Dudley Moore's Last Words)-Dreaming in Stereo

Indeed, according to the friend who was at his bedside when he passed, Dudley's
last words were something to the effect of "I can hear music all around me".
This lovely tune imagines his last moments on Earth.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iyl4rWBUWqQ

#28. Girl In The Night-The Hazey Janes

All that you want in a Power Pop song: Jangly guitars, three part harmonies, and
an ooey-gooey chorus. More than a passing resemblence to The Raspberries here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cL1mI7iKEU

#27. Dear Father-Colin Hay

Gentle accoustic number. Touches deeply anyone who's lost his dad. This one DID
bring a tear to my eye. My dad's been gone 5 1/2 years now, and I still miss
him. If yours is still around, this may make you want to pick up the phone and
give him a call.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVQL_MGv-xY

#26. Set Fire To The Rain-Adele

I hope I don't get sick of this one (it's her current single), as I really
really like it. Man oh man this young lady can bring it. I could easily imagine
Dusty Springfield doing this one back in the day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHjNocHn ... re=related

#25. Hurts Like Heaven-Coldplay

Bouncy little number that is a change of pace from the usual "oh so serious"
output Coldplay is most identified with.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHFmangx5O0

#24. Everything You Are-Graham Colton

Colton's brush with fame came a couple of years ago when "American Idol" used
his "Best Day" as its "the journey ends" theme for going-home contestants. This
is a midtempo, piano-driven easy-rocker with a familiar but pleasing melody.

#23. The Smile of Rachel Ray-David Mead

What a pretty, haunting tune we have here. One you can melt right into.
The lyrics are quite out of the ordinary, set during Christmas time..and
ultimately very sad. This guy is a talent.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEJZxBoB2F4

#22. Haven't Had Enough-Marianas Trench

Well, after that sad song at #23, we need a pick-me-up here. How about this
outstanding throw-your-hands-in-the-air-and-dance-around ditty? They work an
infectious groove that combines funky guitars, a pounding bass drum, and a
Maroon 5 feel with tight, layered harmonies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c5XkGbEQiE&ob=av2e

#21. A Hundred Sinners (Come and Get It)-The Feeling

Love this Brit band, who usually score a tune or two high on the Boneys. Here we
have what I can only call "rock vaudeville". I picture the singer moving from
one side of the stage to the other, with top hat and cane, while a chorus line
does that Rockettes style high kickin'. Yethir!

Up next, my 20 favorite songs of 2011...working our way toward #1.

Re: 2012 Boney Awards-The Songs

#6 Post by T_Bone0806 » Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:58 am

Well, here we go...the cream of my crop for 2011. I must say that I had some
real difficulty arranging the order with my Top 4..during the 3 weeks or so I
spent in the whole process, each of the top 4 were ranked at #1 at one point or
another. This is because I tried not to listen to any of the tunes while doing
the ranking, figuring that if a song was truly that memorable and enjoyable to
me, I wouldn't need to hear it in order to make my decision. I had the first 96
finalized before I turned my attention to solidifying my Top 4. As I said, the
order changed many times up until that point. However, when I went 3 days in a
row with the same order, I called it a wrap. I then listened to my 100 in order.
I knew I made the right decision for #1, as after hearing it in that context, it
was clear, to my ears anyway, that there was no topping the excellence of my
choice for #1.

Still with me? Thanks. Without further ado...

#20. Looking For a Girl-Teddy Thompson

An early 60's feel on this one, with Roy Orbison/Phil Spector/Metropolitan
Country overtones combining for a really nice sound. Lyrics are a bit wonky, but
I love this song anyway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBoA2Wtb-IE

#19. Like We Did (Windows Down)-The Maine

A nostalgic look back at the carefree days of youth, with a melody that fits
that theme perfectly. This band hails from Phoenix.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udw03IoYqJ4

#18. Modern Love-Matt Nathanson

A punchy little piano rhythm and brass accents propel this sunshiny pop effort
that's harder to resist than a handful of M & M Peanut Candies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8KyKvmLz4Q

#17. Everything Is Spinning-Ray Pearen

This is a 70's sounding easygoing pop tune with an heart-tugging chorus. It's
cut 3 on the link below.

http://www.reverbnation.com/artist/artist_songs/761425

#16. Keep Your Head Up-Andy Grammer

Boy, I just must be in the mood lately for these happy, everything is full
of sunshine songs. If my head-banging 13 year-old self could see me now, he'd be
so ashamed.....Can't help it, this is a smile maker, and it's oh-so-hard to
resist singing along to the "whoa-oh's" and the "yeah-eh's"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmrOB_q3tjo

#15. Fall Down-Pugwash

A little harder to get this Irish band's cd's than most (more expensive, too),
as they don't make 'em available easily in the U.S., but I love their
XTC/ELO/Beatles influenced sound, so for me the effort's worth it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDgqw1aImh0

#14. Far From Home-Colin Hay

This track comes closest to the sound of his Men at Work days. The rhythm is
reminiscent of "Down Under", although slower paced and more serious minded. Nice
hooky chorus and a pleasant listen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yf6Zv5myyPk

#13. Wild #2-Royal Teeth

Sounds like a throwback to the 80's. The wordless vocal hook here is what
sells the song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YM6ctdO-x-0

#12.Ahead of the Wave-Non-Commissioned Officers

Thanks to Skoop for the heads up on this one. The Beach Boys meet "Da Doo Ron
Ron" in a New Wave Blender.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCnIBXLeEKA

#11. House-Ben Folds Five

One of three new tracks recorded with the other two members of the reunited Ben
Folds Five for Ben's career retrospective "Best Imitation of Myself", this is
Folds at his best. Lyrically, I THINK it is told from the perspective of an
adult passing by the house in which he suffered either terrible abuse or bore
witness to a lot of misery of another kind. The lyrics leave just enough open to
interpretation as to what he went through in that house. Musically, as usual,
there are plenty of powerful hooks, especially the eerie sounding keyboard riff
that concludes each chorus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDY4-pOuMrg

#10. Brighter Than The Sun-Colbie Caillat

We kick off the top 10 with this bright and happy ode to the first "rays" of
love.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU5o6M7S5nQ&ob=av2e

#9. Heaven-O.A.R.

Blending a mild reggae beat with an extremely infectious chorus, the group comes
up with another winner here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m0y6BL9_P4&ob=av2e

#8. Windows Are Rolled Down-Amos Lee

Easy rollin' song for the highway as the singer begins a new life.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewFB8p1k0Iw

#7. Drive All Night-NEEDTOBREATHE

Another tipoff from Skoop. Combines the intensity of Mumford and Sons with a style not unlike Kings
of Leon. This here is a powerful song, folks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC7YR11gRUQ

#6.Stay the Night-James Blunt

I hated his song from a couple years ago ("You're Beautiful"), but this peppy
singalong song, I love. He's still using the same vocal tricks he used on the
song I so disliked, so what gives? Go figure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1yOGhnmYfI

#5. Dance For The Lights-The Feeling

This one could easily pass for a great lost song of the 80's. I could so hear
Culture Club or a more lighthearted version of Duran Duran doing this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhgCjVbfy6c

#4. Rolling in the Deep-Adele

Most of you know this one. I expect it to cop a couple of Grammys tonight.
Another powerhouse performance from Adele, this one just rocks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYEDA3JcQqw&ob=av2e

#3. Paradise-Coldplay

Another anthem from the Brit group that took the #1 Boney slot for 2009 with
"Viva La Vida".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G4isv_Fylg&ob=av2e

#2. Pumped Up Kicks-Foster the People

An extremely catchy song juxtaposed against some very disturbing lyrics. The
vocal effect on the singer's voice in the verses suitably reflect the detached
emotions of the song's main character. This leads into a hooky chorus that
wouldn't have been out of place on a Fleetwood Mac record. And tends to distract
the listener from the song's story...it's about a kid planning violent revenge
against classmates and his father. The composer is quick to point out that the
lyrics reflect the internal musings of the youth and that the violence doesn't
actually take place in the song itself, but that's kinda beyond the point I
think. Controversial yet undeniably catchy song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDTZ7iX4vTQ&ob=av2e

#1. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF-TEDDY THOMPSON

If you love Roy Orbison, you'll likely love this song. It sounds as if Roy
walked into the studio of Owen Bradley (Nashville producer who applied a more
sophisticated pop sound to country music..that's his work on the classic
recordings of Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee) and cut this beautiful ballad. The
song builds throughout until, when Teddy soars into the last verse in a sweet
and clear falsetto, we are taken into musical heaven. Had this been released in,
say, 1962 or so, we'd be remembering it as a classic recording. Sadly, it comes
about 50 years too late for that. Absolutely love this song!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UjFRBEy4dM

So there you have it. As always, hope you might have found a few new things to
like from this list. Till next year, keep the music playing!

THANKS, T-BONE!!

The few I sampled are wonderful, and all of them were a first-time experience. What I don't hear on RadioDude's station is amazing and probably made very obvious by my LS scores. For a brief time, they had a superb afternoon DJ who was trying to change that with his own set of Boneys, but he was quickly lured away by a bigger station with bigger $. The person they have now has very pedestrian tastes. Oh well.

Thanks again!

Holy shit. Your No. 1 was a Glee song by the new guy everybody hates (Rory), and it was the singer's best moment on the show. I like the way they get hold of pop songs just before they're big, and draw our attention to them ("We Are Young" by Fun was another one like that - check it out for the 2012 Boneys).

Thanks for the lists, T-Bone. I've got some stuff to check out...

Wow! Teddy Thompson scores! I didn't know he'd been doing much lately. I saw him open for (and then back up) his dad a few times, but didn't know he'd grown to this.

Thanks!!!11

Just counted 'em up. I know 19 of the 100. My favorites are Faster, Pumped Up Kicks, Someone Like You, Set Fire to the Rain, Paradise, and Heaven. I will now click on the links to learn the other 81.

Thanks for the list, TBone! I wish I was as versed as you. I may have been competitive in the 80s and early 90s, but I can't hold a candle anymore!

Thanks for the list. Loved that Paradise was near the top. Checked out the video (now I know why he gave Ellen a big elephant head) and from there found the Viva LaVida video. Since son-in-law has talked to Chris Martin on the phone a few times, he and my daughter are huge Coldplay fans, even tough it's apparently not cool anymore (thanks to Mrs. Martin).

One time we were in the car with grandson and Viva LaVida came on and he shouts "I love that song!" His grandmother agrees with him.

Okay--I'm calling foul. Windows Are Rolled Down was released in 2010, but didn't get noticed until 2011. Steve liked it so much he accidentally downloaded it twice. If you check the Amos Lee VEVO it's dated 2010.

BUT--I think you should be allowed to include stuff released in 2010 that didn't get noticed until 2011, especially if it's by people who are just getting noticed. I mean, Adele was going to get wide play since she had been named Best New Artist before, but Fitz and the Tantrums were on Jimmy Kimmel in January of 2011 and most of the east coast hadn't has a chance to experience them before that. Stone Sour was also on Kimmel in January or February of 2011 with stuff released in late 2010.

So I think you can give love to Fitz. Because they're awesome.

It was weird..when "Rory" sang that song on "Glee", I knew I had heard it before, but couldn't remember where. I googled it and the mystery was solved. I had (legally) downloaded the Thompson album and had listened to it once, then put it in a pile of discs that I needed to pull tunes from to put into my iPod. Shortly after that, we were hit by the floods and those cd's were put in a box and carried upstairs. That's why I had only listened to the cd once and the song was familiar yet not identifiable.
