This one is a big surprise to me, reading about it today. Maybe I didnt get it properly, and someones of you can help me.

One of the most unusual tunings for a guitar is the "ostrich" tuning, in which every string is tuned to the same note, which was apparently used effectively by which rocker:

1 - Lou Reed
2 - Mason WIlliams
3 - Ozzie Osbourne
4 - Pete Townsend

My guess is Townsend based on the Rocker part.

To me, that sounds like it could be a Lou Reed kind of thing, as it seems rather "performance arty."

I'm gonna go with Mason Williams. I really don't know this. If it's Townshend I'll be flabbergasted 'cuz The Who is one of my favorite bands and I don't recall ever hearing this term.

As soon as I read Silver's answer I realized that Lou Reed made the most sense. Anyone who would put out "Metal Machine Music" would also tune all of his strings to the same note. Especially since his singing voice is basically one note as well.

As you can tell, I have NEVER been a fan of Mr. Reed (although I liked "Sweet Jane"...when Mott the Hoople covered it).

Here's my supposition, based on no information or knowledge whatsoever. Suppose that when The Velvet Underground was formed, nobody cared if everybody could play their instruments. Lou would be among the non-accomplished musicians of the group, at that time. He had the right look and the right attitude for whatever it was that they all thought they were saying, so he was in. If all his strings were tuned to the same note, he couldn't actually play any clinkers that would detract from the tunes being produced by others. It was Performance Art, and sometimes it included some music, too.

Lou, being Lou, decided at some point that since he had a guitar, he might as well learn to play it like real guitarists do.

So he tuned on the wild side?
