Although there was a potential for a club sandwich, only one team actually bit the dust today. Arizona's victory over San Francisco today toastified the Giants. --Bob

The Dodgers' victory over Pittsburgh today was their 80th of the season. Colorado has lost 83 games, and have long since fallen out of the Wild Card hunt. The Rockies have been toastified. --Bob

The Blue Jays, Indians, and Yankess are all on the ropes. Unless the Rays and ChiSox start losing some games, we could see a club sandwich by Saturday night.

The White Sox victory tonight over Kansas City was the team's 85th. Minnesota has won 83 games and the Twins and White Sox have 3 games left against each other. Therefore, at least one of them will reach 86 wins. Two teams in the AL East have won at least 89 games.

Even though it won tonight, Cleveland has already lost 77 games, so it can win no more than 85. The Indians have been toastified. --Bob

I like the avatar with the toast in it! Alas in a couple of days one of the slices will have "the most famous logo in sports" (as they brag at the Stadium) on it.

We have a club sandwich -- three slices of toast. The Mets' victory today toastified the Cardinals. Combined with Florida's loss, it also toastified the Marlins.

And for the first time since before I was married, the Yankees have been toastified -- Boston's victory over Cleveland did the trick. --Bob

It might be a Monte Cristo sandwich.

ahh, there's nothing like a good monte cristo sandwich, on egg bread, deep fried, liberally dusted with powdered sugar, each bite dunked in maple syrup...

Oh- yes... baseball...

The Cardinals have done a good job the last couple seasons of toastifying themselves.....

LaRussa used to be the master of building a team that thrived in the second half of the season (If not necessarily the postseason). The last three Cardinals teams have seen the wheels come off in September.... and yes, that includes the World Series championship team that nearly blew a 6 1/2 game lead in the final week and a half of the season....

And the sad thing is, they aren't even the masters of the September meltdown in their own division. I really feel for the fans of the Brewers the last couple seasons.....

The win by the Red Sox last night officially eliminated the Yankees. This will be the first Yankee-free post-season since 1993 (there wasn't a post-season in 1994).

At least Joe Torre will keep his playoff streak alive. He was always a good manager. He managed the Cardinals at a time when the ownership refused to spend a dime on improving the team, and those teams won a lot more games than they should have when he was there. The teams they had earlier this decade might have done better in the postseason with him instead of that vastly overrated Tony La Russa.

Back in April and May, it looked like the Diamondbacks were going to run away with the division. It just shows that a baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint.

The Yankees' victory over Boston leaves the Red Sox two games behind the Rays with two games left to play. Both Boston and Tampa Bay have clinched playoff spots and the Rays own the tie-break. Congratulations to the AL Eastern Division champion Tampa Bay Rays.

If you saw that one coming at the start of the season, please take me on your next trip to Vegas. --Bob

Florida's victory at the last game to be played in Shea Stadium, combined with Milwaukee's win over Chicago, leaves New York one game out with none to play. The Mutts have been toastified. --Bob
