Play Ball

The major league players and owners have come to an agreement on a 60-game schedule played over 66 days beginning July 23 or 24. There would be limited "spring" training and a handful of exhibition games. The existing league and division structure would stay in place, but teams would only play in their own division (40 games) and the corresponding division of the other league (20 games). Ten-team playoffs under the same format as last year would begin at the end of September.

Rule changes include a DH for all games, extra inning games beginning with a runner on second base (if that runner scores, it would not be charged as an earned run against a pitcher), and a provision for ending extra-inning games in a tie (details still to be worked out). Rosters will be expanded, probably to 30 players with a 20-player taxi squad. The rule changes from last year (pitchers must face three batters) will also be in effect.

Obviously, the big unknown is the coronavirus and what will happen if a team has an outbreak (multiple Phillies players have already tested positive) or a mayor or governor prohibits playing in a particular stadium. Current plans are for players, but not entire teams, that test positive will be isolated.
