Game #199: On the Flip Side

Identify the 100 songs below. Then, match them into 55 pairs according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Ten of the songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.

Parenthetical parts of titles may count; guest or featured artists do not. And don’t look for the Beatles.

Okay, let’s get this song out of the way first….

1. My name is Ted,
And one day I'll be dead
Yo, yo.

2. Read between the lines
What's f*cked up and everything's all right
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive.

3. And you can trust me not to think
And not to sleep around
If you don't expect too much from me
You might not be let down.

4. When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed,
You just remember what your old pal said.

5. It's like a diamond ring,
It's a precious thing
And we never want to lose it.
It's like a favorite song that we love to sing
Ev'ry time we hear the music.

6. Russian roulette is not the same without a gun
And baby, when it's love, if it's not rough, it isn't fun.

7. Ya got a gun up in your waist,
Please don't shoot up the place (why?)
'Cause I see some ladies tonight
That should be havin' my baby (uh), baby (uh).

8. When everything feels all over,
Everybody seems unkind,
I'll give you a four-leaf clover,
Take all worry out of your mind.

9. All my thoughts just seem to settle on the breeze
When I'm lying wrapped up in your arms.
The whole world just fades away,
The only thing I hear
Is the beating of your heart.

10. You said no strings could secure you at the station,
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows.
I walked into such a sad time at the station,
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning.

11. She said, "What's wrong? This shirt cost $20."
I said, "Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!"

12. Love was out to get me,
That's the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

13. I try, but I can't seem to get myself to think of anything but you.
Your breath on my face, your warm, gentle kiss, I taste the truth, I taste the truth.
We know what I came here for
So I won't ask for more.

14. Once there was a day
We were together all the way,
An endless path unbroken.
But now there is a time,
A torture less sublime,
Our souls are locked and frozen.

15. When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes
Goes "a-a-a-h."

16. Standing across the room I saw you smile,
I said I want to talk to you for a little while,
But before I make my move, my emotions start running wild,
My tongue gets tied and that's no lie.

17. I can dig it, he can dig it, she can dig it,
We can dig it, they can dig it, you can dig it.

18. They only hit until you cry,
After that you don't ask why.

19. You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

20. Ever since she broke your heart
You seem so lost
Each time you pass my way.
Oh, how I long to take your hand
And say, “Don’t cry,
I’ll kiss your tears away.”

21. When I give my heart again
I know it's gonna last forever.
No one tell me where or when,
I know it's gonna last forever.

22. In the summertime we didn't have shoes to wear,
But in the wintertime we'd all get a brand new pair
From a mail order catalog,
Money made from selling a hog,
Daddy always managed to get the money somewhere.

23. See the man with the broken heart, you'll see that he is sad,
He hurts so bad (so bad, so bad.)
See the girl who has lost the only love she ever had.

24. You work and work for years and years, you're always on the go,
You never take a minute off, too busy makin' dough.
Someday, you say, you'll have your fun, when you're a millionaire.
Imagine all the fun you'll have in your old rockin' chair.

25. Left alone with big fat Fanny,
She was such a naughty nanny,
Heap big woman, you made a bad boy out of me.

26. I can tell by the look in your eyes
You've been hurtin’.
You know I'll never let you down, oh no,
And I'll try anything to keep it workin’.

27. To be honest, I'm surprised she even wanted me to do it.
Doesn't really make sense but, man, screw it!
I ain't one to argue with a good thing, she could be my wife.
That good? The best 30 seconds of my life!

28. Oh, you're so condescending,
Your gall is never ending,
We don't want nothin', not a thing from you!
Your life is trite and jaded,
Boring and confiscated,
If that's your best, your best won't do.

29. Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it ever come down to do or die,
You've got to rise above the rest?

30. Lying here next to you
Time just seems to fly,
Needing you more and more,
Let’s give love a try.

31. Sometimes the system goes on the blink, and the whole thing it turns out wrong.
You might not make it back and you know that you could be well, oh, that strong
And I'm not wrong.

32. I'd have sworn that with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head.
I was wrong, now I find
Just one thing makes me forget.

33. Mmm, girl, you look so fine,
You're just a-rockin' an' a-rollin'
Girl, I surely wish you were mine.

34. Well, I'm on my way to the city lights,
To the pretty face that shines her light on the city nights.

35. She said, "Babe, you know I miss Jill and Joe
And all my funky friends."
But my street understanding was just enough to know what she really meant.

36. You don't drive a big fast car,
You don't look a-like a movie star,
And on your money we won't get far.

37. He's got the gamblin' man in His hands,
He's got the sinner man in His hands.

38. Jump down the shelters to get away,
The boys are cockin' up their guns.
Tell us general, is it party time?
If it is, can we all come?

39. Hey baby girl, I've been watching you all day.
Man, that thing you got behind you is amazing!
You make me want to take you out
And let it rain.

40. When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all,
But if you just believe, there's no way we can fall.

41. I recall hanging out on Friday night,
The first slow dance,
Hoping that I'll get it right.

42. I wear tight clothing and high heel shoes,
It doesn't mean that I'm a prostitute.
I like rap music, wear hip hop clothes,
That doesn't mean that I'm sellin' dope.

43. I'll be the face that you see in the crowd,
I'll be the times that you cry out loud,
I'll be the smile when there's no one around,
I'll be the book that you just can't put down.

44. I see cannibals munchin’
A missionary luncheon.
The years may have flown but the memory stays,
Like the hopes that were dashed
When the stock market crashed.

45. Remember when the circus came to town,
How you were frightened by the clown?
Wasn't it nice to be around someone that you knew
Someone who was big and strong and looking out for you?

46. Now one brave man, he tried to take 'em alone.
They left him Iyin' in a pool of blood,
And laughed about it all the way home.

47. This goes out to all the women in the world,
Especially her.
You know it don't even matter your age,
Don't even matter yo color.

48. Let's go crazy, crazy, crazy 'til we see the sun.
I know we only met, but let's pretend it's love.

49. We stand side by side
Till the storms of life pass us by.
Light my life, warm my heart,
Say tonight will be just a start.

50. I'll shine up the old brown shoes,
Put on a brand new shirt,
I'll get home early from work
If you say that you love me.

51. Talk to me,
Tell me your sign,
You're switching sides like a Gemini.
You're playing games and now you're hittin' my heart
Like a drum
Yeah, baby!

52. Boys with small talk and small minds
Really don't impress me in bed.
She said, “I need a man's man, baby,
Diamonds and furs.
Love would only conquer my head.”

53. In a cafe or sometimes on a crowded street,
I've been near you, but you never noticed me.

54. Jack be nimble, Jack be quick,
Take a ride on the West Coast kick.

55. I knew a man that I did not care for
And then one day this man gave me a call.
We sat and talked about things on our mind
And now this man ,he is a friend of mine.

56. Six am day, after Christmas.
I throw some clothes on in the dark.
The smell of cold car seat is freezing,
The world is sleeping,
I am numb.

57. There she stood in the street,
Smiling from her head to her feet.
I said, “Ah, hey, what is this?
Now baby, maybe, maybe she's in need of a kiss.”

58. Ev'rywhere I go the sun comes shining through,
Ev'ryone I know is sure it shines for you,
Even in my dreams I look into your eyes,
Suddenly it seems I've found a paradise,
Ev'rywhere I go the sun comes shining through.

59. Smart and coy, a little crazy,
The kind of face that starts a fight.
Let me tell you 'bout the girl I had last night.

60. Out on the new horizon
You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings
And if the sleep has left your ears
You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow.

61. And all the bells on earth shall ring,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day,
And all the bells on earth shall ring,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

62. Take my photo off the wall
If it just won't sing for you,
'Cause all that's left has gone away
And there's nothing there for you to prove.

63. Though you signing me a writ, while I'm trying to do my bit,
I don't expect to take your heart, I only want what I can get.

64. LA fever made me feel alright,
But I must admit it got the best of me.
Getting down, so deep I could have drowned.
Now, I can't get back the way I used to be.

65. The pale moon was rising above the green mountain,
The sun was declining beneath the blue sea,
When I strayed with my love to the pure crystal fountain.

66. In just a matter of a few days, yea!
His dance became the new teenage craze.

67. Those other guys all wanna take me for a ride,
But when I walk, they talk of suicide.
Some people never get beyond their stupid pride
But you can see the real me inside.

68. Playing a role,
Aching to start,
Keeping control
While falling apart.

69. So I signed my name on number 24,
Yeah, the judge said, "Boy, just one more,
I'm gonna throw your ass in the city joint."
Looked me in the eye, said, "You get my point?"

70. Do you remember that day (that sunny day)
When you first came my way?
I said no one could take your place.
And if you get hurt (if you get hurt)
By the little things I say,
I can put that smile back on your face.

71. How many came before, it really doesn't matter
Just as long as you're the last.
Everybody's moving on and trying to find out
What's been missing in the past.

72. From standin' on the corners boppin'
To drivin' some of the hottest cars New York has ever seen,
For droppin' some of the hottest verses rap has ever heard,
From the dope spot, with the smoke Glock
Fleein' the murder scene, you know me well,
From nightmares of a lonely cell, my only hell.

73. I'll be alone each and every night,
While you're away, don't forget to write.

74. I want you happy, I want the best for you,
And if you have to leave to find your dream,
I hope that dream comes true.
But if the world you find brings you hard times,
If someone makes you cry,
I'll be there to hold you, I'll be standing by.

75. The things that you do,
The things that you say,
That you love me baby
In the strangest way.

76. Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk,
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk.

77. What's got you so jumpy?
Why can't you sit still, yeah?
Like gasoline you want to pump me
And leave me when you get your fill.

78. For there are you, sweet lollipop,
And here am I with such a lot to say.
Hey, hey!

79. No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed.
This is my kingdom come.
This is my kingdom come.

80. I, I live among the creatures of the night.
I haven't got the will to try and fight.

81. He's never near you to comfort and cheer you
When all those sad tears are fallin', baby, from your eyes.

82. Forty-seven dead beats living in the back street,
North, east, west, south, all in the same house.

83. I learned all the rules of a modern-day drifter.
Don't you hold on to nothin' too long,
Just take what you need from the ladies, then leave them
With the words of a sad country song.

84. Well, me and my friends, we all love to see
Comedy classics on late night TV.

85. Every little thing you do
Seems to turn me on,
Even when you're talking nasty to me
Over the telephone.

86. Home for the holidays,
I believe I've missed each and every face,
Come on and play my music,
Let's turn on the love light in the place.

87. I feel like Tarzan, of the Jungle
There on the hot sand
And in a bungalow while monkeys play above
We make love.

88. Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood,
Miss "No way, it's all good",
It didn't slow me down
Mistaken, always second guessing, underestimated.
Look, I'm still around!

89. After my picture fades
And darkness has turned to gray,
Watching through windows,
You're wondering if I'm okay.

90. Debonair lullabies
In melodies revealed.
In deep despair or lonely nights
He knows just how you feel.

91. There's a light,
A certain kind of light,
That never shone on me.
I want my life to be lived with you.

92. Hey, farmer, farmer,
Put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees.

93. They say that all good things must end someday,
Autumn leaves must fall.

94. Everybody's hustlin' a-just to have a little scene,
When I say we'll be cool, I think that you know what I mean.
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, it never ends.

95. Well, I'm heavenly blessed and worldly wise,
I'm a peeping-tom techie with x-ray eyes.

96. Let me watch you go with the sun in my eyes.
We've seen how love can grow,
Now we'll see how it dies.

97. If you grew up with holes in your Zapatos
You'd celebrate the minute you was having dough.
I'm like, "F*ck critics" you can kiss my whole a**hole.
If you don't like my lyrics, you can press fast forward.

98. Chestnut-brown canary,
Ruby-throated sparrow,
Sing a song, don't be long,
Thrill me to the marrow.

99. Rags to riches, or so they say,
Ya gotta keep pushin' for the fortune and fame.
You know it's all a gamble when it's just a game,
Ya treat it like a capital crime,
Everybody's doin' the time.

100. The kingdom of this world
He is become.
The kingdom of our Lord
And of his Christ
And of his Christ.

2. Read between the lines
What's f*cked up and everything's all right
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams -- Green Day

9. All my thoughts just seem to settle on the breeze
When I'm lying wrapped up in your arms.
The whole world just fades away,
The only thing I hear
Is the beating of your heart.

Breath -- Faith Hill

Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows.
I walked into such a sad time at the station,
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning.

I said, "Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!"

Parents Just Don't Understand -- DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

That's the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

I'm a Believer -- The Monkees

15. When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes
Goes "a-a-a-h."

The Girl from Ipanema?

17. I can dig it, he can dig it, she can dig it,
We can dig it, they can dig it, you can dig it.

Grazing in the Grass -- The Friends of Dictinction

20. Ever since she broke your heart
You seem so lost
Each time you pass my way.
Oh, how I long to take your hand
And say, “Don’t cry,
I’ll kiss your tears away.”

Hey, There, Lonely Boy

Identify the 100 songs below. Then, match them into 55 pairs according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Ten of the songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.

Parenthetical parts of titles may count; guest or featured artists do not. And don’t look for the Beatles.

Okay, let’s get this song out of the way first….

3. And you can trust me not to think
And not to sleep around
If you don't expect too much from me
You might not be let down.

I don't know what song it is, but when I find out, I'm adopting this as my new anthem in life

First consolidation….

8. When everything feels all over,
Everybody seems unkind,
I'll give you a four-leaf clover,
Take all worry out of your mind.

LET MY LOVE OPEN THE DOOR-PETE TOWNSHEND

10. You said no strings could secure you at the station,
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows.
I walked into such a sad time at the station,
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning.
IN THE WHITE ROOM - CREAM

PROBABLY INCONSEQUENTIAL, BUT DROP THE "IN THE..." FROM THIS ANSWER

15. When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes
Goes "a-a-a-h."

36. You don't drive a big fast car,
You don't look a-like a movie star,
And on your money we won't get far.
YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES - MARVIN GAYE

THE FIRST HIT VERSION WAS BY MARV JOHNSON. DAVE CLARK 5 ALSO HAD A HIT WITH IT. BOTH RECORDS WENT TOP TEN. GAYE DID RECORD IT, WITH TAMMI TERRELL, BUT IT WAS NOT A HIT SINGLE.

They left him Iyin' in a pool of blood,
And laughed about it all the way home.

WOW. NOT GUILTY-COULD BE THE BEATLES OR GEORGE HARRISON. THE BEATLES' VERSION WAS INTENDED FOR THE WHITE ALBUM BUT DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT (DESPITE OVER 100 TAKES BY THE BAND) AND REMAINED UNHEARD (EXCEPT ON BOOTLEGS) UNTIL IT WAS INCLUDED ON THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY 3 ALMOST 30 YEARS LATER. IT SHOWED UP IN A RE-RECORDED VERSION ON GEORGE HARRISON'S SELF-TITLED 1979 ALBUM.

78. For there are you, sweet lollipop,
And here am I with such a lot to say.
Hey, hey!
OH BABE WHAT WOULD YOU SAY-HURRICANE SMITH. HE WAS AN ENGINEER ON BEATLES RECORDINGS UP THROUGH RUBBER SOUL AND ALSO PRODUCED SOME EARLY PINK FLOYD ALBUMS.

CELEBRATE ME HOME-KENNY LOGGINS

93. They say that all good things must end someday,
Autumn leaves must fall.
SUMMER SONG - PETER AND GORDON? CHAD & JEREMY?

DEFINITELY CHAD AND JEREMY. THESE DAYS, THOUGH, IT'S PETER AND JEREMY, AS GORDON WALLER PASSED AWAY AND CHAD STUART RETIRED, SO THEIR EX-PARTNERS SOMETIMES PERFORM TOGETHER.

So this is kind of stalled, so I'll just hrow this out there. In thinking about the "Flip Side" of the title, there are a number of titles that could have direct opposite. To wit:

You've Got a Friend in Me - Enemy?

We're In This Love Together - Apart?

White Room - Black?

Parents Just Don't Understand - Children?

The Girl From Ipanema - Boy?

Hey There Lonely Boy - Girl?

Coal Miner's Daughter - Son?

Fat Bottomed Girls - Skinny? Boys?

Bad Day - Good?

The Good Old Days - Bad? New? Nights?

Other exmples abound.

I interpreted the title to signify some kind of letter flip was at play here, but have had no luck with that...

I also found it odd that Frank said right off the bat not to look for the Beatles (though that could just be that the Beatles often introduce too many alternative matches into these games), but....

Bad Day - Good?

There's a Sunshine song in the game. But that match wouldn't incorporate an artist, and I think the artists fill a capacity somehow...

I may have something. I only have three matches so far, so it may be coincidence, but that's my minimum criteria for trying a Tangredi, so...

97. 99 Problems, 40. USA for AFRICa,– Toto
54. HOLIDAY Road, 42. En VOGUE – Madonna
69. I can’t DRIVE 55, 23. Blue MAGIC – The Cars

Part of one title + Part of one artist = two songs by the same artist, who is not on the list of artists.

Don't know if they're going to be one word titles yet. There are some promising short titles in here, like Old Days. But we'll see.

LOL! I should have known this was the key when I saw En Vogue in the game and a lot of other bands that looked familiar from that same game a few years ago. That was the first Tangredi game I helped crack! I got too hung up on the title this time...

26. I can tell by the look in your eyes
You've been hurtin’.
