touching the face

I get it, if someone sneezes or coughs on my hands (which they can't, as I am too far away), and then I should not stick my finger in my eye.

But if I am at home, what's the big deal? The reason I never learned how to apply makeup was because I want to paw at my face like a pitcher going to his nose.

If I have to get one of those cones from the vet, I'd like to understand why.

The short answer is that the virus is transmitted through droplets and those could be present on surfaces you touch like door handles, railings, elevator buttons, and public touchscreens.
