Re: Game #198: Generation Gap

#51 Post by mrkelley23 » Fri Mar 27, 2020 10:46 pm

Thoughts, since I have been periodically visiting here, but have not yet come up with a suitable Tangredi:

There is a Bilbo, and a hobbit in the Associated Words list (assuming that is a common misspelling there, and not something more fraught), but no match.

Then again, there is a Martin in the clues, but no Freeman (unless there is a bastardized anagram in Manfred Mann somehow).

I keep finding names in truncated versions of clue names. For instance, there is a Rivers and an associated word of Idaho, and River Phoenix starred in My Own Private Idaho, but I can't find anything else that completes that match. There is a Rains, and River's sister's name is Rain (originally Rainbow, but wth), but Rain had nothing to do with My Own Private Idaho.

I'm not sure what the "different form" Frank referred to is, but perhaps Bernard of whatever should be referred to as Saint Bernard for whatever fist name/last name/ pairing Frank has going.

One of the Associated words is 22, and Bernard King wore that jersey number, but I can't find any other matches like that.

Frank said he thought this Tangredi was easy, so I may be overthinking things.

Cecil Day-Lewis certainly seems to suggest Daniel Day-Lewis, but I can't find and Associated word that would go with him.

There's a Redi in this puzzle, but no Tang that I can find. :)

Again with the dropping part of a name and anagramming, Angela Burdett-Coutts could go with Harper Lee (since Coutts anagrams to Scout, without the extra T)

Matthew Boulton, without the extraneous U could pair with John Locke to form neocon John Bolton

Seward's first name is William, and Dershowitz's is Alan.

All I've thought of, for now.

Finally quit thinking about associated words, and tried to find the clue in the title. Tried to come up with father-son or some other familial relation, to fit the generation part, but that went nowhere.

But, minding the gap...

Tangredi: First name of one pairs with a last name made by running all the letters of the second clue together with no gap.

142. OTIS Williams + 16. ArthuR EDDINGton = Otis Redding (Dock)
30. KING Gillette + 147. DaVID ORtiz = King Vidor (Crowd)

129. DICK Turpin + 136. PaTRICK LEahy = Dick Trickle (Pole?)

Latest consolidation…

Identify the 150 people below. (Yes, that’s a lot of people, but the Tangredi is fairly simple – I hope.) Match them into 75 pairs according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Then, match each pair with one of the Associated Words. No name will be used twice.

8. is JEROME ROBBINS, which gives us Melly's ROMERO.

127. is Carmen de Lavallade, which seems ripe to pair up with Gregor Samsa for Gregor Mendel (Peas)

I noticed people had both Will Riker and Michael Ansara paired with Klingon. Ansara was more famous for playing a Klingon (Kang). Perhaps Riker could pair with Captain or something else, instead.

Not surprisingly, there are some alternate matches in the latest consolidation, but you will work those out. Good going!

Shoot -- my Indiana bias showing through again. I thought, "Dick Trickle was a stock car driver -- never raced in the Indy 500." I forgot that there are, um, other 500 mile races to consider.

So yes -- he goes with 500.
