Lyrically Speaking - 2/21/20

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Feb 21, 2020 4:22 am

No, no.... it can't be!!! Yes, sadly, today's game is the 25th and final game of the 2020 LSWE. I've ended a number of my lyrics contests, even going back to the days before this became a winter tradition, with the all Music Choice game. But this year that won't happen because I'm saving a butt-ton of money by not being a cable subscriber (Hell, I don't even watch TV anymore). So instead, I'm giving you something else I've closed out games with in the past... the All Krox game! I went back over all of the previous games this year, and pulled one valid Krox song from each game. I also made sure to get at least one Krox from each player (Except Beebs, who was too serial killer obsessed to give a Krox). So hopefully you can identify the songs you chose to Krox... or at least the one I chose for you. The 25th song is my special Krox to you, the players, without whom running this game each year would be pointless. Good luck, and thanks for another great year!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Got a beat up glove
A homemade bat
And a brand new pair of shoes

2. And if I could be king
Even for a day
I'd take you as my queen
I'd have it no other way

3. I never wanted to
Be your weekend lover
I only wanted to
Be some kind of friend

4. I know my mind is made up
So put away your make up
Told you once
I won`t tell you again
It`s a bad way

5. They're gonna put me in the movies
They're gonna make a big star out of me
We'll make a film about
A man that's sad and lonely

6. We don't even care, as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts

7. Cause I`m homesick
Feel a little down and blue
And I`m hurting, hurting
Baby, just like you

8. He sees his children jumping off
At the stations, one by one
His woman and his best friend
In bed and having fun

9. (Say you will)
Say it right now, baby (say you will)
Come on, come on (say you will)

10. Well, I don't know no good come-ons
And I don't know no cool lines
I feel the heat of your frustration
I know it's burning you up deep down inside

11. Mister Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase
And kissed his kids goodbye

12. There'll always be sunshine when I look at you
It's something I can't explain just the things that you do
And if you get lonely phone me and take
A second to give to me that magic you make

13. With the dark
Oh, I see so very clearly now
All my fears are drifting by me
So slowly now, fading away

14. Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man a man
Black as the dark night, she was
Got what no one else had, waaaa

15. Strumming my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp
They're beginning to boil

16. So you think we have a lazy time,
Well you should know better
And I don`t know why,
I just don`t know why.

17. I've changed my face
I've changed my name
But no one wants you
When you lose

18. Bonedigger Bonedigger
Dogs in the moonlight
Far away my well-lit door

19. Let me tell you
A story of my situation
I was talking to this girl
From the U.S. nation

20. Between the darkness on the street
And the houses filling up with light
Between the stillness in my heart
And the roar of the approaching night

21. In this life I've seen everything I can see, woman
I've seen lovers flying through the air hand in hand
I've seen babies dancing in the midnight sun
And I've seen dreams that came from the heavenly skies above

22. When I think of all the times
I tried so hard to leave her
She will turn to me and start to cry
And she promises the earth to me

23. Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts
Is always your best bet

24. The evening had turned to rain
Watch the water roll down the drain
As we followed him down to the station

25. If it's a car you lack
I'd surely buy you a Cadillac
Whatever you need
Any time of the day or night

ASCOT GAVOTTE/ENSEMBLE FROM MY FAIR LADY
My parents played this album all the time when I was a child - it opened on Broadway when I was two - and I loved this song most even though I had no idea then why it was funny. They took me to see it when I was six, the first Broadway show I ever saw. I have a visceral memory of the lights going down and the overture starting. I got a chill - at age six! - and knew then that the theatre was a place I never wanted to leave. And I never have.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name the song with artist that was the very first song to ever be your favorite

VERY FIRST?? I had a few 45's of kids' songs that I played incessantly. I remember a song called Michael Finnegan as being a favorite, but it would take deep hypnosis to extract the artist from my memory. Then there were my parents' records, which I played a lot...but I'll go with the first one that screamed out, "this is YOUR MUSIC! YOURS!!!" That would, of course, be I Want To Hold Your Hand by The Beatles. There is no possible way to downplay the impact that record made on me and so many others of my generation.

SHOUT - THE ISLEY BROTHERS

9. (Say you will)

Lonely Teardrops-Jackie Wilson

It took two people answering Lonely Teardrops for me to realize just how close this lyrical snippet from "Shout" also fits that song. While it's not an exact match, it's close enough that I'm going to accept Lonely Teardrops as a correct answer as well...

It's hard to remember back that far, and I'm sure I had favorites before this, but the first 45 single I bought was CLASSICAL GAS by Mason Williams (1968).

No, no.... it can't be!!!

5. They're gonna put me in the movies
They're gonna make a big star out of me
We'll make a film about
A man that's sad and lonely
This is Act Naturally, as sung by Mr. Ringo Starr of The Beatles. This is one of our favorite singy songs. We also like Mr. Ringo a lot, because he seems to be kind of short, so he could reach down and give us head pets more easily and more often. If he wanted to. We think he would want to, if he met us.
Kroxquo Bonus: Name the song with artist that was the very first song to ever be your favorite
We vote for "I Saw Her Standing There," also by The Beatles, because that was the first song for which we realized we could sing along in the key of "Saw Her Standing There," and after that, we started to pay attention to all the Beatles songs and to the wisdom of Mr. Peter Asher.
Image Bonus: As the meister takes his final bows for presenting the 2020 LSWE, what would you in the audience throw on stage?
We would throw warm, wet kisses.

Special Lyrically Speaking thanks go to Mr. little for letting us play, and to Mr. esto for trying so hard to teach us how to make our pictures show up okay.

I also give special thanks to me, because today -- the very last day -- I finally remembered the spoiler thingie.

Thanks for the games I did see. Next time PM me, dammit. Especially since I called you out a few weeks prior to that asking after the LSWE..... I do believe I'm owed about 533 bonus points for that. Although it's more likely I'll get Kevin Love's jersey number.....ha!

No, no.... it can't be!!!

Centerfield - John Fogarty

Put me in coach, I don't smoke - Dadism! Although it loses a little if you don't have the jerking off visual...

2. And if I could be king
Even for a day
I'd take you as my queen
I'd have it no other way

Dammit, I know this is Clapton, but I can't think of the title because now I've got Heroes going through my head....

3. I never wanted to
Be your weekend lover
I only wanted to
Be some kind of friend

Purple Rain - Prince

4. I know my mind is made up
So put away your make up
Told you once
I won`t tell you again
It`s a bad way

Roxanne - Police

5. They're gonna put me in the movies
They're gonna make a big star out of me
We'll make a film about
A man that's sad and lonely

Act Naturally - Buck Owens

6. We don't even care, as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts

7. Cause I`m homesick
Feel a little down and blue
And I`m hurting, hurting
Baby, just like you

8. He sees his children jumping off

His woman and his best friend
In bed and having fun

Locomotive Breath - Jethro Tull

9. (Say you will)
Say it right now, baby (say you will)
Come on, come on (say you will)

Shout - Otis Day and the Knights

Might as well pull an Esto on the artist, since apparently you used a bunch of his kroxes, judging from the number of them that I don't know thus far....

10. Well, I don't know no good come-ons
And I don't know no cool lines
I feel the heat of your frustration
I know it's burning you up deep down inside

Ain't Even Done with the Night - John Cougar

No Mellencamp back then. I even have this pre-American fool album, mostly for I Need a Lover, probably still my fave tune of his....

11. Mister Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase
And kissed his kids goodbye

Ironic - Alanis Morrissette

12. There'll always be sunshine when I look at you
It's something I can't explain just the things that you do
And if you get lonely phone me and take

I'm sure I've told the Bowie story before, so I'll spare you....

13. With the dark
Oh, I see so very clearly now
All my fears are drifting by me
So slowly now, fading away

14. Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man a man
Black as the dark night, she was
Got what no one else had, waaaa

Venus - Shocking Blue

15. Strumming my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp
They're beginning to boil

Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffett

Hey, yesterday was National Margarita Day! My brother celebrated early by drinking five of them at dinner Thursday night. On the rocks, even. Did you ever? What a swell party this is.... Why do I even bother? Probably nobody other than Mel or Frank would get that....

16. So you think we have a lazy time,
Well you should know better
And I don`t know why,
I just don`t know why.

Cum on Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot

Yeah Slade, whatever.... one of the few times I'll take the remake over the foreigners because it's just so much better. If for no other reason than the drums.

17. I've changed my face
I've changed my name
But no one wants you
When you lose

18. Bonedigger Bonedigger
Dogs in the moonlight

23. Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts

Desperado - Linda Ronstadt

Always preferred her version, but the best one was by Johnny Rodriguez.

Watch the water roll down the drain
As we followed him down to the station

That's the first song I can remember singing all of the words to when we'd grab a microphone during one of the jams my Dad's band did at our house. But I'm sure before that it was some Disney tune or old musical number. I did put TDN, because back then I didn't know from Hoyt Axton....

No, no.... it can't be!!!

Much thanks to those of you who shared the stories behind your first favorite. The first song I can ever remember having a strong like for on the radio was Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue." Although little 8 year old LB thought the song was called "Trick Avenue" at the time...

Sorry for the delay in finishing out the scoring. I got distracted after posting the answers and was ready for bed before getting back to it....

Of course, as per long standing LSWE tradition, everyone who thanked me in some way for running the game got three bonus points. Even those who were completely insincere (and late.... again) like Anon...

JJC Points:

Vandal gets a supermax for dollar bills stamped with something other than Where's George (and it was hilarious)...

Weasel gets a supermax for the Granny Panties and for my favorite LSWE player tradition (I may have to rename the gratitude +3 the Weasel Bonus)...

frank gets a supermax for picking out all three of his Kroxes, how he got into the theatre, and for recycling blow up grannies (ewww).....

Panic gets 2 JJC points for the hat trick...

jarnon gets a JJC point for the applause I had to hunt down since it just showed a blank space...

TBone gets 3 JJC points for the Michael Finnegan earworm (grade school music class!) and for throwing his groupies on stage, which might lead to a few broken hips...

Krox gets 3 JJC points for being a fan of Up With People, and for throwing cars on stage...

Lizbit and Wiki get a supermax for finally remembering the spoiler, and wet, slobbery dog kisses (mop bucket, please!)...

melly gets 2 JJC points for The Beastles and for commissioner voodoo dolls...

Earl gets a supermax for the jerk off Dadism, throwing giant orange balls on stage, and for posting an hour before I announced my plans for the LSWE, and yet somehow still missing out on the first three weeks of it. Next year, I'll send a singing telegram along with an engraved invitation...

Esto gets 2 JJC points for the million bucks. And yes, I did count the stacks to make sure the million was all there, but since it's obviously counterfeit due to all of the serial numbers being identical, I'm afraid I'll have to leave it for charity...

Anon gets a supermax for being an asshole to me and to the entire Net Games Central community. Now where else can you get rewarded for such behavior, other than the WWE?

Points:

Vandal 27+5+3
Weasel 35+5+3
frank 37+5+5+3
Panic 40+2+3
jarnon 19+1+3
TBone 45+3+3

Krox 20+3+3
Liz/Wiki 9+5+3
melly 42+2+3
mrk 43+2
Hottie 23+3
Bob 8+3
Earl 49+5+3
Esto 47+2+3
Anon 25+5+3
